Parvovirus B19 Seroprevalence in Women with Bad Obstetric History in Kirkuk.

BACKGROUND: In the Iraqi community, abnormal pregnancy forms a major social and psychological health problem. The underlying etiology of this health phenomenon was varied and included sets of infections and autoimmune diseases. Globally human parvovirus 19 infection is common and the infection attributes to bad obstetric outcomes. The global maternal parvovirus B19 remote infection rate was within a range of 13.2% to 97.9%, while the range of acute infection was between 0.5% to 97.9%. In Arab countries, the IgG seroprevalence was from 53.3% to 74%, while IgM seroprevalence range was 2.2% to 84…

Structure of Parvovirus B19 Decorated by Fabs from a Human Antibody.

Parvovirus B19, one of the most common human pathogens, is a small DNA virus that belongs to the Parvoviridae As a result of previous infections, antibodies to B19 are present in most adults. B19 has a strong tropism to erythroid progenitor cells and is able to cause a series of medical conditions, including fifth disease, arthritis, myocarditis, hydrops fetalis, and aplastic crisis. No approved vaccine is currently available for B19, and there is a lack of structural characterization of any B19 epitopes. Here we present the first cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of a B19 virus-lik…

Parvovirus B19 Infection in a Fatal Case of Acute Liver Failure.

B19V has been proposed as an etiologic agent for hepatitis, mainly in children, but this is a rare clinical occurrence. In this article, we report a case of non-A-E acute liver failure in an immunocompetent child with B19 infection. The clinical findings of severe anemia and pancytopenia combined with the detection of anti-B19 Immunoglobulin G (IgG), B19 DNA and B19 mRNA in liver indicate a persistent infection and suggest a diagnosis of parvovirus B19-associated acute liver failure.

Severe anemia due to parvovirus B19 in a silver haired boy.

Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive immunodeficiency disorder in which the affected children present with characteristic silvery-white hairs. The hair microscopy of these children is characteristic and is helpful in differentiating GS from Chediak-Higashi syndrome which also presents with immunodeficiency and silver hairs. We report a 17-month-old boy with GS type 2 who presented with severe anemia. Bone marrow examination of the child suggested parvovirus B19 as the cause of severe anemia, which was later confirmed by DNA polymerase chain reaction.

Genotyping and pathobiologic characterization of canine parvovirus circulating in Nanjing, China.

BACKGROUND: Canine parvovirus (CPV) is an important pathogen that causes acute enteric disease in dogs. It has mutated and spread throughout the world in dog populations. We provide an update on the molecular characterization of CPV that circulated in Nanjing, a provincial capital in China between 2009 and 2012. RESULTS: Seventy rectal swab samples were collected from the dogs diagnosed with CPV infection in 8 animal hospitals of Nanjing. Sequence analysis of VP2 genes of 31 samples revealed that 29 viral strains belonged to CPV-2a subtype, while other two strains were classified into CPV-2b.…

Parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy and subsequent morbidity and mortality in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Because parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy has been associated with infant morbidity and mortality in case reports and after intrauterine transfusion, we tested the population-based association using serum and hospital data of high quality. METHODS: We established a cohort of 113 228 children born to women tested for parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy in a major diagnostic laboratory in Denmark, from 1994 to 2009. Information on 20 selected morbidity diagnoses and on mortality was obtained from the Danish National Patient Register, the Danish Cancer Register and the Dani…

Wells' syndrome associated with parvovirus in a 5-year old boy.

Wells' syndrome, otherwise known as eosinophilic cellulitis, is a rare dermatosis seen more commonly in adults than in children. In this article, we present a 5-year-old Caucasian boy who initially presented with pruritic, erythematous macules and papules evolving to bullae formation. Subsequent histology confirmed diagnosis of Wells' syndrome, and additional blood work also demonstrated positive immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG for parvovirus. In many instances, the direct etiology of Wells' syndrome is unclear, but the link between parvoviral infection and development of Wells' syndrome could fu…

A pilot study on parvovirus B19 infection in paediatric haematological malignancies.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Leukaemia and lymphoma are common paediatric haematological malignancies acquiring human parvovirus B19 (B19) infection. In some studies anaemia has been found in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) during maintenance therapy and rarely in lymphoma. We studied frequency of B19 infection and its implications in new onset acute leukaemia (mostly ALL) and lymphoma in children. METHODS: Seventy serum samples from 35 children (age <12 yr, 29 males) newly diagnosed with haematological malignancies (on induction therapy) were collected together with 34 controls…

Placental transmission of human parvovirus 4 in newborns with hydrops, Taiwan.

In studying the epidemiology of parvovirus 4 (PARV4) in Taiwan, we detected DNA in plasma of 3 mothers and their newborns with hydrops. In 1 additional case, only the mother had PARV4 DNA. Our findings demonstrate that PARV4 can be transmitted through the placenta.

Infection and immunity for human parvovirus B19 in patients with febrile exanthema.

The contribution of parvovirus B19 (B19V) as a causative agent of febrile exanthema (FE) in Cordoba, Argentina, was analysed by detection of viral DNA, and specific IgM and IgG. Serum from 141 patients with FE who were negative for measles and rubella, collected during 2005-2009, plus serum from 31 healthy individuals, were assayed. B19V was the aetiological agent in 14·9% of all FE cases, and in 39·1% in an epidemic year (2007). B19V DNA was detected in 47·6% of IgM-positive FE patients, 30·2% of IgM-negative/IgG-positive FE patients, and 9·7% of healthy controls, indicating B19V long-term in…

[Acute anaemia in a Vietnamese patient with alpha-thalassaemia and a parvovirus infection].

A 14-year-old girl of Vietnamese descent with an unremarkable medical history presented with haemodynamic shock due to severe anaemia. This was caused by an aplastic crisis resulting from the combined effects of a Parvovirus infection and HbH disease. The HbH disease was a result of compound heterozygosity for the South East Asia (SEA) deletion and the Constant Spring mutation in the genes coding for alpha-globin chains (HbH/Hb Bart's). The girl had multiple blood transfusions and recovered. Family investigation revealed that, in addition to these 2 mutations in the alpha-globin gene, some fam…

Pathogenesis of aleutian mink disease parvovirus and similarities to b19 infection.

Aleutian mink disease parvovirus (ADV) is an unusual member of the autonomous parvoviruses in both its replication and pathogenesis. Infection of newborn mink kits results in an acute disease typified by virus replication in type II pneumocytes in the lung. This replication is permissive and cytopathic, characterized by the production of high levels of viral replicative intermediates and infectious progeny. However, infection of adult Aleutian mink leads to a chronic form of the disease termed Aleutian disease (AD). In this case, virus replication occurs predominantly in lymph node macrophages…

Acute parvovirus B19 infection associated with myocarditis in an immunocompetent adult.

Inflammatory heart disease is causally linked with progressive left ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart failure. In childhood, infection with parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is usually benign, causing erythema infectiosum. However, severe fetal PVB19 infection may be associated with hydrops fetalis and fetal death caused by myocarditis. Here we report a PVB19-induced myocarditis in a previously healthy 37-year-old patient admitted to the hospital because of chest pain and dyspnea due to left ventricular dysfunction. Four weeks after the onset of symptoms, we found lymphocytic infiltrates and P…

Immunoglobulin M and G immunoblots in the diagnosis of parvovirus B19 infection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To identify parvovirus B19 infection by means of immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM immunoblots among immunocompetent patients who tested negative or had low-titer B19 IgM antibodies in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from 20 patients with parvovirus B19 infection. Another 130 study subjects presumed to be without B19 infection (40 medical personnel and 90 prisoners) were also included. All sera from the patient and study groups tested positive for IgG or IgM with ELISA and were further evaluated using the immunoblot method. …
