Pasteurella multocida peritonitis associated with a cat in a peritoneal dialysis patient using an automated cycler device.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is an aerobic Gram-negative coccobacillus, which is found as part of the natural oral flora of many animals, including most healthy cats and dogs. However, it can cause a variety of infections in humans, usually as a result of the patient being bitten or scratched by a cat or dog. There have been 22 reported cases of P. multocida peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Of these, 66.7 % occurred within 12 months of the initiation of PD. Only two cases (11.1 %) developed more than 60 months after the commencement of PD. We report a case o…

Detection of Pasteurella multocida isolates from local pigs of India by polymerase chain reaction and their antibiogram.

Pasteurella multocida has been recognized as an important veterinary pathogen for over a century. Conventional methods for diagnosis of pasteurellosis rely on the detection of the organism by microscopy and its isolation and identification. However, as far as pasteurellosis is concerned, it is not just sufficient to know the identity of the organism. To constitute effective control measures, it is important to know the serotype of the organism. A study was undertaken to characterize the Pasteurella isolates from local pigs in India with clinical respiratory disease by determination of their ca…

Identification of genes transcribed by Pasteurella multocida in rabbit livers through the selective capture of transcribed sequences.

Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative nonmotile coccobacillus, is the causative agent of fowl cholera in poultry, hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle, atropic rhinitis in swine, and snuffles in rabbits. The differentially expressed gene profile of P. multocida in infected rabbit livers was identified and compared with that from in vitro culture by selective capture of transcribed sequences. A total of 31 genes were identified, of which 28 encoded enzymes for amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism, intermediary metabolism, and energy metabolism, or proteins for regulatory adaptive responses, gene…

Characterization and time course of pulmonary lesions in calves after intratracheal infection with Pasteurella multocida A:3.

Pasteurella multocida A:3 is a common cause of suppurative bronchopneumonia in calves and results in significant production losses and mortality. Here we describe the lesions in three calves at each of four time points (1 day and 4, 7 and 10 days) after experimental intratracheal infection with approximately 1x10(9) colony-forming units of P. multocida A:3 Moredun Research Institute (MRI isolate 671/90). Equivalent age- and time-matched sham-dosed negative control animals were also studied. Infected calves developed significantly elevated mean rectal temperatures (P<0.001) and respiratory rate…

Pasteurella multocida septicemia caused by close contact with a domestic cat: case report and literature review.

We report here a case of Pasteurella multocida infection caused by cat exposure presenting with septic shock, sinusitis, and pneumonia. The patient was a febrile 20-year-old woman who had been experiencing disturbed consciousness progressively. She had close contact with a domestic cat and had received some scratches on both arms. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the head showed a high intensity in the paranasal cavity, and a computed tomographic (CT) scan of the chest showed bilateral lung consolidations. The pathogen was identified as P. multocida by the cultures from blood and nas…

Molecular variability among strains of Pasteurella multocida isolated from an outbreak of haemorrhagic septicaemia in India.

The applicability of conventional and molecular methods for rapid detection and differentiation of Pasteurella multocida serogroup B isolates involved in an outbreak of haemorrhagic septicaemia affecting Indian buffaloes, was studied. Five isolates were obtained and were subjected to phenotypic and genotypic characterization. None of the five isolates could be differentiated on the basis of cultural, biochemical, pathogenicity and antimicrobial sensitivity patterns. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based techniques were found to be specific and sensitive for rapid detection and differentiation …

The observation of reactive thrombocytosis in New Zealand white rabbits in response to experimental Pasteurella multocida infection.

Reactive thrombocytosis is an increase in the circulating thrombocyte count secondary to a physiologic process within the body, often an infection. Reactive thrombocytosis is different than primary or essential thrombocytosis which is usually related to myeloproliferative neoplasia. Essential thrombocytosis is most common in adults, whereas reactive thrombocytosis is most frequently observed in children. Reactive thrombocytosis has been occasionally reported in cats, dogs and horses but has not been previously reported in the rabbit. Rabbits were challenged with virulent Pasteurella multocida.…

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome complicating primary biliary sepsis due to Pasteurella multocida in a patient with cirrhosis.

Pasteurella multocida is an opportunistic pathogen causing bacteraemia in patients with liver dysfunction. A fulminant case of acute cholecystitis and septicaemia caused by P multocida, complicated by Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome without skin haemorrhage, is reported in a previously healthy 64 year old Chinese woman. The patient presented with a six hour history of sudden onset epigastric pain, vomiting, chills, and rigors. A presumptive diagnosis of cholangitis with septicaemic shock was made. Disease progression was rapid and the patient died within eight hours of symptom onset. This cas…

Vaccination of turkeys with cell-free culture filtrate of Pasteurella multocida: effects of ultrafiltration and endotoxin removal.

Cell-free culture filtrate (CCF) of Pasteurella multocida strain R44/6 (serotype 3/4/9/12) was fractionated by ultrafiltration into fractions of less than 10,000, greater than 10,000, greater than 30,000, and 10,000 to 30,000 molecular weight (MW). The less-than-10,000-MW fraction contained little endotoxin comparable to bacteriologic medium; the 10,000-to-30,000-MW fraction had a moderate amount of endotoxin, whereas the greater-than-10,000- and greater-than-30,000-MW fractions contained high levels of endotoxin. Following ultrafiltration, each fraction, except the less-than-10,000-MW fractio…

Delayed Destructive Osteoarticular Infection Caused by Pasteurella multocida Following Misleading Initial Clinical Improvement: A Case Report.

A 35-year-old woman presented with a digital infection after exposure to cat saliva without a clearly identified bite wound. She underwent surgical debridement and received antibiotic therapy, with apparent initial clinical improvement. Despite favorable early evolution, she returned four weeks later with pain, swelling, and stiffness of the affected finger. Further evaluation revealed a destructive infection involving the proximal interphalangeal joint, requiring additional surgical management. This case highlights the potential for delayed deep-seated infection following animal-related hand

Engineered OMVs of Salmonella displaying PlpE antigen provide effective protection against Pasteurella multocida infection in mice.

Pasteurella multocida is a major zoonotic pathogen that contributes to progressive atrophic rhinitis and the porcine respiratory disease complex in pigs, leading to significant economic losses in the swine industry. Current vaccines show limited efficacy and safety concerns. Here, we developed an OMV-based antigen display system using the signal peptide of OmpD derived from Salmonella Typhimurium to present the protective antigen PlpE. The engineered OMVs enabled surface localization of PlpE and were evaluated via intranasal immunization in mice. Immunization induced strong antigen-specific Ig…

First outbreak of bovine haemorrhagic septicaemia caused by Pasteurella multocida type B in Spain - Short communication.

This paper describes the first documented outbreak of haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) caused by Pasteurella multocida type B in cattle in Spain. This acute, highly fatal septicaemia causes major economic losses in cattle and buffaloes in many areas of Asia and Africa. In other species and in European countries it is an infrequently reported disease. Acute septicaemic pasteurellosis occurred in a free-range farm of 150 cattle and 70 beef calves in Southern Spain. Twenty-one calves and one cow were affected, of which three calves and the adult cow died. Postmortem examination revealed characterist…

Experimental pathogenicity and complete genome characterization of a pig origin Pasteurella multocida serogroup F isolate HN07.

Pasteurella multocida serotype F isolates are predominately prevalent in avian hosts, but rarely seen in pigs. However, we isolated several strains of P. multocida serotype F from clinical samples of pigs in China. To understand the pathogenicity of these strains, one of the serotype F isolates designated HN07, was used to challenge experimental chickens, as P. multocida of this serotype is predominately prevalent in avian hosts. However, strain HN07 could not resulted in significant clinical signs in experimental chickens even at an infective dose of ∼109 CFU, suggesting the isolate was aviru…

Cross-protection against fowl cholera disease with the use of recombinant Pasteurella multocida FHAB2 peptides vaccine.

It has been demonstrated that fhaB2 (filamentous hemagglutinin) is an important virulence factor for Pasteurella multocida in development of fowl cholera disease and that vaccination with recombinant FHAB2 peptides derived from P. multocida, P-1059 (serotype A:3) protects turkeys against P-1059 challenge. Here the hypothesis that vaccination with the same rFHAB2 peptides could cross-protect turkeys against challenge with P. multocida chi73 (serotype A:1) was examined. Three rFHAB2 peptides were purified and pooled, and two doses, consisting of equal amounts of each, were administered subcutane…
