Primary posterior chamber IOL implantation in penetrating ocular trauma.

This paper describes the experience of primary cataract extraction and posterior chamber IOL implantation in 11 eyes with penetrating ocular trauma. The primary surgical procedure consisted of repair of corneoscleral laceration, cataract extraction, posterior chamber IOL implantation and in certain cases, removal of intraocular foreign body and vitrectomy. 10 out of 11 cases had a post operative visual acuity of 6/18 or better, with 9 out of 11 having a post operative visual acuity of 6/12 or better. One case initially had a visual acuity of 6/24 but later developed retinal detachment with a v

Nonwavefront-guided Presby reversal treatment targeting a monofocal cornea after bi-aspheric ablation profile in a patient intolerant to multifocality.

PURPOSE: To analyze distance and near vision after a nonwavefront-guided Presby reversal treatment targeting a monofocal cornea in a patient intolerant to multifocality in the dominant eye. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: An originally myopic patient treated for correcting distance ametropia and simultaneously alleviating presbyopic symptoms resulted in intolerance to the induced multifocality. Twenty-one months after the bi-aspheric multifocal treatment, the patient was treated with PresbyMAX reversal (SCHWIND eye-tech-solutions, Kleinostheim, Germany) to remove the previously induced multif

Face-specific identification impairments following sight-providing treatment may be alleviated by an initial period of low visual acuity.

Identifying faces requires configural processing of visual information. We previously proposed that the poor visual acuity experienced by newborns in their first year of life lays the groundwork for such configural processing by forcing integration over larger spatial fields. This hypothesis predicts that children treated for congenital cataracts late in life will exhibit persistent impairments in face- but not object-identification, because they begin their visual journey with higher than newborn acuity. This would not be the case for patients whose pretreatment condition has allowed for init

Presumed latent ocular tuberculosis diagnosed with the positive quantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube Test in a HLA-A29-positive patient.

A 59-year-old Hispanic woman presented with a 3-year history of floaters associated with bilateral reduced visual acuity. Her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/40. Both anterior segments were without inflammation, but fundoscopy showed mild vitreous inflammation and multiple inflammatory choroidal lesions. Tests for inflammatory and infectious diseases were negative except for human leucocyte antigen A29. The patient was diagnosed with birdshot choroidoretinopathy, and treatment was initiated with cyclosporine A 2.5 mg/kg/day. One year after treatment, the patient reported systemic sy

[Ocular bartonellosis: report of three clinical cases].

The characteristic clinical presentation of cat scratch disease is subacute regional lymphadenopathy; nevertheless, 5-25% of Bartonella henselae infections may present an atypical or systemic form, with potential eye involvement. We describe three clinical cases of ocular bartonellosis in two adolescents and one young adult, who had close contact with cats; all of them presented persistent fever ranging from 15 to 21 days, and two of them developed a sudden unilateral loss of visual acuity associated with optic neuritis. The other patient presented retinal choroiditis and unilateral retinal mi

Clinical Outcomes of a Randomized Trial with Contact Lenses for Astigmatic Myopia Management.

SIGNIFICANCE: There are limited treatment options for myopia management of patients with moderate to high astigmatism. This work directly compares toric orthokeratology and soft toric multifocal lenses to show differences in visual acuity and patient satisfaction that could impact clinical care. Toric orthokeratology caused reduced visual acuity but was preferred subjectively for vision and overall. PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify objective and subjective clinical differences between toric orthokeratology and soft toric multifocal contact lenses in the same cohort of myopic wearers with

Psychogenic visual disorders in an abused child: a case report.

A 17-yr-old female, classified as retarded educable, was found to have uncorrected visual acuity of 20/800 in both eyes, unimproved by a pinhole disc. A low myopic correction determined objectively did not improve her visual acuity. Tangent-screen studies uncovered neurasthenic spiral fields superimposed on hysterical tubular contractions of both eyes. Investigation uncovered a history of child abuse since infancy. To rule out organic lesions of the oculocalcarine visual pathways, the patient was referred for electrodiagnostic evaluation. Her visual evoked responses were found to be normal. Wi

Visual field improvement in non-arteritic posterior ischemic optic neuropathy in a patient treated with intravenous prostaglandin E1 and steroids.

Non-arteritic posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-PION) is a disorder of reduced blood flow to the retrobulbar optic nerve. There is usually an acute loss of visual acuity and field. Previous studies have noted an improvement in visual acuity and in ocular and retrobulbar blood flow with the use of a potent vasodilator of the microcirculation, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), and steroids. The current report describes immediate improvement in the visual fields and visual acuity in a patient with NA-PION treated with intravenous PGE1 and steroids 66 hours after onset. An 89-year-old white female wa

Visual, refractive and patient-reported outcomes after two trifocal intraocular lens designs: a 12-month comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Trifocal intraocular lenses differ in how their optical architecture apportions incident light between foci, but comparative evidence combining acuity, defocus testing, contrast sensitivity and patient-reported outcomes in large routine-care cohorts is limited. We compared 12-month visual, refractive and patient-reported outcomes after implantation of two trifocal intraocular lens designs. METHODS: This retrospective comparative cohort screened 432 patients and analysed one right eye from each of 340 patients (170 per group) implanted with a sinusoidal pupil-adaptive or a conventi

PROGNOSTIC FACTORS FOR POSTOPERATIVE VISUAL OUTCOME IN SURGICALLY TREATED SUPRASELLAR MENINGIOMAS.

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of postoperative visual acuity in patients with surgically treated suprasellar meningiomas is influenced not only by the size and precise localization of meningiomas in the optochiasmatic region and their compressive effect, but also by certain parameters, such as the age of patient, duration of symptoms, and preoperative visual acuity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of these factors on postoperative visual acuity in the patients with surgically treated optochiasmatic meningioma as well as to determine their prognostic value in the recovery o

Tolerance to surgically induced anisometropia-A systematic review.

Surgically induced anisometropia is well tolerated by some individuals, while others experience binocular visual complaints. Surgically induced anisometropia is a common treatment for presbyopia and may also intentionally or non-intentionally be the results after surgery for unilateral cataract with ametropia in the fellow eye. Research has shown significant variations in the tolerance of anisometropia. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the correlation between the degree of anisometropia, patient satisfaction and binocular visual complaints. We searched the databases: PubMed, EM

Clinical importance in Alzheimer's disease: effects of anchor agreement and disease severity.

OBJECTIVES: Methods of evaluating clinically meaningful decline are critical in research on Alzheimer's disease. A common method of quantifying clinically meaningful change is to calculate an anchor-based minimal clinically important difference (MCID) score. In this approach, individuals who report a meaningful change serve as the "anchors", and the mean level of change for this group serves as the MCID. In research on Alzheimer's disease, there are several possible anchors, including patients, knowledgeable observers (e.g., a family member), and clinicians. The goal of this study was to exami
