Consistent changes in muscle metabolism underlie dive performance across multiple lineages of diving ducks.

Diving animals must sustain high activity with limited O2 stores to successfully capture prey. Studies suggest that increasing body O2 stores supports breath-hold diving, but less is known about metabolic specializations that underlie underwater locomotion. We measured maximal activities of 10 key enzymes in locomotory muscles (gastrocnemius and pectoralis) to identify biochemical changes associated with diving in pathways of oxidative and substrate-level phosphorylation and compared them across three groups of ducks-the longest diving sea ducks (eight spp.), the mid-tier diving pochards (thre

Safety of an Intravenous Formulation of Voriconazole as an Intramuscular Injection in Pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica).

Aspergillosis is a common disease in birds. Currently, avian aspergillosis is treated with voriconazole administered orally, although intramuscular (IM) administration increases bioavailability and is more effective in treating generalized aspergillosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of the intravenous formulation of voriconazole as an IM injection in the pectoral muscles of pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica) as a model for other avian species. Sixteen healthy pigeons received IM injections of voriconazole (12.5 mg/kg) and sterile saline in the right and left pectora

A dual stage adaptive thresholding (DuSAT) for automatic mass detection in mammograms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer through mammography screening reduces breast cancer mortality by around 20%. However it is often a complex process to differentiate abnormalities due to the ill-defined margins and subtle appearances. METHOD: This paper investigates a new computer aided approach to detect the abnormalities in the digital mammograms using a Dual Stage Adaptive Thresholding (DuSAT). The suspicious mass region is identified using global histogram and local window thresholding method. The global thresholding is done based on the Histogram Pe

General features and treatment of notalgia paresthetica.

Notalgia paresthetica is a neurocutaneous disorder that most commonly manifests as pruritus and a brownish macula in the patient's upper back. Pain, burning, and paresthesias to a variable degree have also been reported. Although the physiopathology of notalgia paresthetica is still obscure, it is currently considered a sensory neuropathy caused by damage to the spinal nerves. To date, no definitive treatment has been described for this disorder. Alternatives, including physical therapies and topical, systemic, and intralesional drugs, have been tested with diverse results. A review of the cur

Maxillomandibular deformity in association with Poland anomaly.

A case of jaw deformity in association with right-sided Poland anomaly in an 18-year-old male patient is presented. As there have been no cases previously reported of pectoralis major muscle hypoplasia combined with dentofacial deformity, it is hoped that other reports would emerge to describe a new syndrome.

Thoracoacromial Pedicle-Supercharged Conjoined Flap With Cutaneous Advancement Flap and Pectoralis Major Integration for Chest Wall Reconstruction Following Multiple Recurrent Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans: A Case Report.

Recurrent dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) of the anterior chest wall in elderly patients presents a complex reconstructive challenge, necessitating approaches that balance oncological radicality with minimized morbidity and optimal tissue quality for potential adjuvant radiotherapy. We report the case of an 84-year-old woman with an eighth recurrence of chest wall DFSP. Following wide local excision with clear margins, a significant soft tissue defect remained. To address the patient's advanced age, comorbidities, and need for robust tissue in a planned radiation field, an unconventiona

Sternotomy Wound Closure: Equivalent Results with Less Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinitis after a median sternotomy can be life-threatening. The advent of pedicle flap-based treatment has resulted in an improvement in both morbidity and mortality. However, significant morbidities can still occur following the use of flaps for sternal closure, particularly in patients with comorbidities. To minimize an extensive surgical dissection, we modified our approach to reconstruction using a modified subpectoral approach, leaving the overlying skin attached. This technique focuses primarily on controlling wound tension rather than on maximal muscle coverage. This st

Escobar Syndrome with Monodactyly: A Rare Case Report.

Escobar syndrome (nonlethal type of multiple pterygium syndrome) is a very rare genetic disorder. The central manifestations of Escobar syndrome are the presence of multiple pterygia, fixed joint contractures, and characteristic facies. Here, we report a case of Escobar syndrome with additional features such as monodactyly and hypoplastic pectoralis muscle.

Abnormal development of biceps brachii phasic stretch reflex and persistence of short latency heteronymous reflexes from biceps to triceps brachii in spastic cerebral palsy.

Co-contraction of antagonist muscles is characteristic of spasticity arising from perinatal brain damage but not in spasticity occurring after brain damage in adulthood. Such co-contraction is a normal feature of early post-natal motor development. Heteronymous, monosynaptic Group Ia projections from biceps brachii to both the antagonist triceps brachii and to other synergist and non-synergist muscles of the upper limb occur in the newborn baby and become restricted during the first 4 years to motor neurons of primarily synergistic muscles. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have been pe

Sarcopenia evaluation on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in older adults for outcomes prediction following surgical aortic valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia refers to a reduction in skeletal muscle mass and strength. Despite the known association between single-slice muscle measurements on lumbar computed tomography and poor outcomes in various clinical settings, studies using thoracic muscle measurements on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) have been limited. METHODS: Patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) between 2010 and 2020 were included if they were ≥ 50 years of age with preoperative CMR. Manual unilateral pectoralis major and minor skeletal muscle area measurements were made at the carin

Male chest correction. Pectoral implants and gynecomastia.

Implants have been developed in different sizes and shapes to mimic the pectoralis major muscle and its nipple-areolar complex below it. These soft, solid silicone implants have the approximate dimensions in height, length, and thickness as the muscle the implant is to mimic. Some improvements in the treatment of breast hypertrophy have also allowed a better result in the surgery of gynecomastia. The challenge of obtaining a smooth and flat result has been helped by the technique of liposuction with circum-areolar excision.

Poland syndrome: Fortuitous discovery of a familial case in Togo.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Poland syndrome is a rare malformative disease. It is characterized by agenesis or hypoplasia of the pectoralis major muscle associated or not with a malformation of the ipsilateral thoracic limb. The authors report the fortuitous discovery of a familial case of Poland syndrome in Togo. CASE PRESENTATION: He was a 25-year-old young man, with no known pathological history, examined as part of a physical fitness assessment and who presented with thoracic asymmetry. The clinical and radiological explorations made it possible to conclude to a Poland syndrome in its mi

[Surgical treatment of sternoclavicular osteomyelitis].

Osteomyelitis of the sternocosto-clavicular (SCC) articulation is a rare infection usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus and enterobacteria. It usually occurs in individuals with osteoarticular disease or predisposing factors. Prolonged antibiotic treatment and articular puncture are generally accepted. Authors do not agree on an established protocol. We report three cases of SCC septic arthritis in two previously healthy patients with two foci of infection (one perianal abscess and one dental extraction) and in one adult patient with Still's disease. Pain and intense inflammation was referr
