BACKGROUND: To perform step-by-step analysis of the different factors (material, anesthesia technique, human, and location) that led to majo … risks by implementing checklists, formations, and alarms allows us to reduce errors. The number of pediatric anesthesia performed routinely appeared to be essential for limiting risks and reporting our mistakes will be a benefit for all who care about patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute musculoskeletal infection affects >1 in 6,000 children in the United States annually. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of musculoskeletal infection, but it traditionally requires contrast and anesthesia for children, delaying management. A rapid MRI protocol involves MRI without anesthesia and with limited non-contrast sequences optimized for fluid detection and diffusion-weighted images to identify abscesses. We hypothesized that a rapid MRI protocol would improve imaging and treatment efficiency for pediatric patients undergoing muscul

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication after pediatric general anesthesia, impairing recovery. While vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is linked to POD in adults, its role in children remains unclear. This study investigates the association between preoperative 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] levels and POD in children undergoing laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective study enrolled 320 pediatric patients. Demographic, surgical, anesthetic, and laboratory data were collected. Preoperative serum 25(OH)D3 was measured, and PO

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients undergoing cardiovascular interventions outside the operating room are at high risk of perioperative hypothermia. We aimed to compare the effects of upper body and full underbody forced-air warming blankets on the time-weighted deviation of esophageal temperature outside the target range (36.5-37.5 °C) during general anesthesia.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled study, 88 children (age < 15 years) scheduled for elective cardiovascular interventions under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to the upper body (n = 44) or full underbody (n = 44) group. A

BACKGROUND: The preanesthesia clinic has been established for decades, with numerous studies confirming its advantages. However, in certain countries or regions, preanesthesia clinic services have yet to be implemented or have encountered resistance during their development. Moreover, there is little literature addressing whether preanesthesia clinic benefits healthy patients undergoing minor surgical procedures. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore whether the preanesthesia assessment model influences short-term post-anesthesia recovery, aiming to uncover additional benefits of prea

BACKGROUND: Emergence delirium (ED) is a common complication in pediatric anesthesia. Although intranasal dexmedetomidine (DEX) is widely used, its application is constrained by a slow onset, residual risk of ED in some patients, and risks such as bradycardia and hypotension. Esketamine (ESK), an NMDA receptor antagonist, may provide a faster onset and reduce these side effects.
OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy and safety of intranasal DEX-ESK combination versus DEX alone as premedication for anesthesia induction in pediatric patients undergoing surgery.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, Covid-19 pushed Swedish health care to its limits regarding access to hospital beds and staffing. A previous investigation of the effects of the first wave of the pandemic in the spring of 2020 revealed a substantial reduction in elective pediatric surgery. The aim of the present study was to expand this analysis on a national and regional level during almost three years with Covid-19.
METHODS: For this retrospective cohort study, routine data from all procedures in patients <16 years of age in 2019-2022 were extracted from the Swedish Perioperative Register. Data were an

BACKGROUND: The oculocardiac reflex (OCR) is the most common complication in pediatric strabismus surgery, and its main clinical manifestation is bradycardia. Esketamine can activate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to an indirect cardiovascular stimulation effect, which results in increased blood pressure and a faster heart rate. The aim of this study is to explore whether a sub-anesthetic dose of esketamine can effectively inhibit the oculocardiac reflex during strabismus surgery.
METHOD: This prospective, single-center, randomized, double-blinded trial will enroll 204 pediatric pati

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although many pediatric neuroradiology practices empirically use noncontrast brain and pituitary MR imaging for evaluation of growth hormone deficiency, central precocious puberty, and short stature, there are currently insufficient published data to support this practice in an evidence-based fashion. Therefore, the use of contrast-enhanced MR imaging for all pediatric pituitary endocrinopathies remains widespread. We evaluated whether noncontrast MR imaging has adequate diagnostic yield for the evaluation of pediatric growth hormone deficiency, central precocious puber

Background: The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a potent brainstem response often underrecognized during pediatric dental procedures. We aimed to quantify TCR dynamics, identifying procedural and temporal predictors of occurrence and resolution. Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study (NCT07240688) in pediatric patients undergoing dental procedures under standardized sevoflurane anesthesia. TCR was defined as a ≥10% (mild) or ≥20% (severe) abrupt decrease in heart rate (HR) and/or mean arterial blood pressure (MABP). Data were analyzed using Generalized Estimating Equations (G
