Feasibility and acceptability of peer-delivered HIV and syphilis self-test kits and assisted partner notification services for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men: a qualitative study in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: There is a need to combine different approaches to tackle the HIV epidemic, particularly in high-incidence populations. We explored the feasibility and acceptability of using peer-delivered HIV self-testing (HIVST), syphilis self-testing (SST) and assisted partner notification (APN) services among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in Uganda. METHODS: From November 2023 to March 2024, we conducted in-depth interviews with 20 purposively selected GBMSM peers and 10 healthcare workers (HCWs). The GBMSM and HCWs interviews explored their perspectives on (1) t

Trauma History as a Significant Predictor of Posttraumatic Growth Beyond Mental Health Symptoms in Women-Identifying Survivors of Undergraduate Non-Consensual Sexual Experiences.

There is little data on what influences posttraumatic growth for women who experienced non-consensual sexual contact (NCSC) as an undergraduate college student. The purpose of this study is to garner a better understanding of posttraumatic growth among women-identifying survivors of undergraduate NCSC by addressing the following aims: 1) evaluate the mediating role of NCSC-related shame on the relationship between perceived peer rape myth acceptance and posttraumatic growth (n = 174); and 2) evaluate the shared and independent variance contributions of mental health symptoms and trauma history

[Alumni of medical sciences and their life satisfaction].

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Medical doctors are especially burdened with psychological and social aspects of their occupation. These circumstances may lead to low life satisfaction and substance abusing behaviour and burn out symptoms are probable. In this paper we investigate, if alumni of medical sciences show lower life satisfaction compared to their peers. If so, we want to know, which factors influence this result. This survey is based on n = 671 alumni of medicine in seven German universities. RESULTS: The life satisfaction of alumni differs significantly from the peer sample. Outstanding a

Risk factors leading to adolescent substance abuse.

The risk factors leading to adolescent substance abuse were examined to provide greater understanding of their influence. The risk factors were divided into four major categories: demographic, social, behavioral, and individual. Each category was broken down into its respective components, among which are ages of susceptibility; gender differences; the influences of family, peers, and environment; the influence of past use of substances; the relationship between substance abuse and other problem behaviors; and the relationships between substance abuse and academic achievement, psychological va

An 8-year study of multiple influences on drug use and drug use consequences.

Multiple long-term influences on young adult drug use and abuse were tested within an interactionist perspective using latent-variable causal models. Intrapersonal influences included early drug use and social conformity. Proximal interpersonal influences were captured by perceived peer drug use, perceived adult drug use, and family disruption. More distal influences included perceptions of community approval or disapproval for drug use. Outcome measures included not only use of drugs but also disruptive drug use (getting high at work or school) and self-admitted problems with drugs. Data were

The Risks of Exposure: The Impact of Social Circles on Youth Gang Involvement and Criminal Behavior in Adulthood.

Social interactions within deviant circles during adolescence increase the likelihood of criminal behavior in the ensuing years. Similarly, exposure to gang-involved peers, parents, siblings, and cousins heightens the likelihood of gang membership. However, few studies have simultaneously considered the impact of exposure to both gang and criminal justice-involved circles. This study addresses this gap by using logistic regression and administrative data from Multnomah County, Oregon, on male adolescents who received a criminal referral between 2002 and 2017. Our findings reveal that exposure

Informal teacher leadership and teacher occupational well-being in Chinese higher education: The role of sense of power.

This study examined the relationships among informal teacher leadership, sense of power, and teacher occupational well-being among university teachers in eastern coastal China. Survey data from 404 full-time university teachers across ten universities were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results showed that informal teacher leadership was positively associated with sense of power and teacher occupational well-being, and that sense of power accounted for a significant indirect association between informal teacher leadership and teacher occupational well-being. These findings s

Peer attitudes toward children with cleft (lip and) palate related to speech intelligibility, hypernasality and articulation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In addition to anatomical and physiological problems, children with a cleft (lip and) palate (CP ± L) often face psychosocial difficulties. A complex interaction between patient and environment may induce these problems. Based on the literature, speech disorders may negatively influence a listener's judgement of a speaker. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the attitudes of peers toward the speech of children with CP ± L. METHOD: Sixty-nine typically-developing children (7-12 years, 34 boys, 35 girls) judged audio-recorded speech samples of nine ch

Networks of support: Microboards for children with intellectual disability.

Friendships are an important aspect of social inclusion and can have a positive influence on a child's social and emotional wellbeing beyond childhood. A Microboard is a formal approach to building supportive relationships for people with intellectual disability. Establishing a Microboard during childhood may facilitate a peer support network that endures into adulthood. However, there is limited empirical research exploring the role and design of Microboards in the lives of children with intellectual disability and therefore further research is needed.

Brief Peer-Supported Web-Based Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (BPS webSTAIR) for Trauma-Exposed Veterans in the Community: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Peer-supported mobile health (mHealth) programs hold the promise of providing a low-burden approach to increasing access to care and improving mental health. While peer support has been shown to improve engagement in care, there is limited investigation into the impact of peers on symptom outcomes. Trauma-exposed populations frequently endure co-occurring posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms as well as difficulties in day-to-day functioning. This study evaluated the potential benefits of a peer-supported, transdiagnostic mHealth program on symptom outcomes and functioning.

Do predictors of gambling involvement differ across male and female adolescents?

We examined gender-specific factors, which might be related to adolescent gambling behavior, using a comprehensive set of predictors from neighborhood, school, family, peer, and intrapersonal domains. Discriminate function analyses revealed a unique pattern of results for each gender. The noteworthy predictors for males were similar to what is found to be predictors of other risk behaviors, suggesting that there may be a similar etiology to gambling participation as found with other risk behaviors. Compared to males, the model for females suggests that parents and peers may have a greater infl

'Getting addicted to it and losing a lot of money… it's just like a hole.' A grounded theory model of how social determinants shape adolescents' choices to not gamble.

BACKGROUND: Gambling abstinence when underage lowers the risk of harmful gambling in later life. However, little research has examined why many young people refrain from gambling, even though this knowledge can inform protective strategies and lower risk factors to reduce underage gambling and subsequent harm. This study draws on the lived experience of adolescent non-gamblers to explore how social determinants while growing up have shaped their reasons and choices to not gamble. METHODS: Fourteen Australian non-gamblers, aged 12-17 years, participated in an in-depth individual interview (4 g

Symptom networks of internalizing and externalizing problems in children with leukemia: a network analysis and computer-simulated intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Children with leukemia commonly experience internalizing and externalizing problems, yet their symptom-level interactions remain unclear. Network analysis provides a framework to examine associations among co-occurring symptoms and to explore potential intervention-relevant targets within a system-level context. METHODS: A total of 1,126 children with leukemia in the rehabilitation phase were included. Emotional and behavioral problems were assessed using the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Symptom endorsement rates were calculated, and an Ising net
