Neural evidence for intermediate representations in object recognition.

The lateral occipital complex (LOC), a cortical region critical for human object recognition, has been shown to primarily code the shape, rather than the surface properties, of an object. But what aspects of shape? Using an fMRI-adaptation (fMRI-a) paradigm in which subjects judged whether two contour-deleted images of objects were the same or different exemplars, virtually all the adaptation in LOC [especially in LOC's most anterior portion (pFs)] could be attributed to repetition of the parts, almost none to the repetition of local image features, such as lines or vertices, templates, or bas

A glimpsing model of speech perception in noise.

Do listeners process noisy speech by taking advantage of "glimpses"-spectrotemporal regions in which the target signal is least affected by the background? This study used an automatic speech recognition system, adapted for use with partially specified inputs, to identify consonants in noise. Twelve masking conditions were chosen to create a range of glimpse sizes. Several different glimpsing models were employed, differing in the local signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) used for detection, the minimum glimpse size, and the use of information in the masked regions. Recognition results were compared w

Infants' sensitivity to broadband noise.

Infants have higher pure-tone thresholds than adults. One explanation is that infants do not adopt the frequency-selective listening strategy that adults use when detecting tones. In contrast to other models of infants' immature sensitivity, the listening strategy account predicts that infants will be more sensitive to broadband sounds, relative to adults. Infants 7-9 months old were tested in two experiments to examine their sensitivity to broadband noise. Unmasked and masked thresholds for a 1000-Hz tone and for broadband noise were estimated adaptively for infants and adults using an observ

[Visual backward masking in schizophrenia].

Visual backward masking is used to investigate the function of attention as the initial stage of visual information processing by measuring the shortest stimulus presentation time for accurate cognition. This is achieved by applying a masking stimulus after target stimulus presentation. In this study, 50 controls and 50 schizophrenics (paranoid type) were examined by this method. In the control group, 1) there was a significant decline in correct answers to the target stimulus with age; and 2) there was a significant increase in correct answers with repetition. However, in the schizophrenic gr

Intact visual imagery and impaired visual perception in a patient with visual agnosia.

Although it is now well accepted that visual mental imagery and visual perception share common underlying mechanisms, there are several reports in which they are dissociated. Evidence for the separability of these processes is provided by a patient, C.K., who has a profound visual object recognition deficit attributable to an impairment in grouping or segmenting visual images. Despite this perceptual deficit, C.K. was able to draw objects in considerable detail from memory, and his knowledge of the visual appearance of objects was preserved on a variety of mental imagery tasks. Together with p

The effect of conductive hearing loss on the masking-level difference: insert versus standard earphones.

Previous studies have indicated that the masking-level difference is reduced in listeners having conductive hearing loss, even when sensation level is controlled. According to the crosstalk hypothesis, this deficit can be explained in terms of reduced binaural cues at the level of the cochleas, due to acoustic contributions from the bone conduction route. It is possible that such a deficit can be overcome through the use of insert earphones, because such transducers provide a high degree of interaural attenuation. In this study, NoSo and NoS tau thresholds were measured in normal-hearing subje

Apical hair cells and hearing.

This study assessed the contribution of the apical hair cells to hearing. Guinea pigs, chinchillas and monkeys were behaviorally trained using positive reinforcement to respond to pure-tone stimuli. When a stable audiogram had been determined, each subject received one of three experimental treatments: ototoxic drug administration, low-frequency noise exposure, or the application of a cryoprobe to the bony wall of the cochlear apex. After post-treatment audiograms stabilized, subjects were euthanized and the percentage of hair cells remaining was assessed by light microscopy. Results indicate

Apperceptive agnosia due to carbon monoxide poisoning. An interpretation based on critical band masking from disseminated lesions.

Apperceptive visual agnosia is normally held to be a specific deficit in 'apperception' - a hypothetical postsensory stage in visual processing. This paper describes the investigation of a patient diagnosed as suffering from a classical apperceptive agnosia resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning. Controlled behavioural testing confirmed the apparent agnosia but revealed that he could be trained to make a number of visual discriminations which had not been apparent from routine clinical examination and that he suffered a number of subtle sensory impairments which likewise had not hitherto bee

The masking dilemma and its solution. Fusion at the inferred threshold (FIT) and sensorineural acuity level (SAL) tests.

It is difficult or impossible to obtain air or bone conduction threshold levels in some cases of moderately severe conductive involvement because it may be impossible to mask the nontest ear without also masking the test ear. This has been termed the "masking dilemma." In most of these "masking dilemma" cases the fusion at the inferred threshold (FIT) test can determine the air conduction hearing levels, and in some cases the sensorineural acuity level (SAL) test can help determine the sensorineural function.

Classroom-based speech recognition better predicts listening comprehension than clinic-based measures in primary school children.

Classroom noise can substantially interfere with children's access to spoken instruction, yet speech perception is typically assessed using clinic-based measures collected under controlled listening conditions. This study examined (1) how classroom signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and developmental level influence speech recognition (SR) and listening comprehension (LC), and (2) whether clinic-based SR predicts classroom LC as effectively as classroom-based SR. One hundred eleven normal-hearing students in Grades 2-5 completed SR (WIPI) and LC (TROG-2) tasks in occupied classrooms under multiple no

Tinnitus selectively disrupts phoneme level speech perception.

Chronic subjective tinnitus has been linked to impaired speech-in-noise perception, yet its impact on phoneme level processing remains unclear. We assessed phoneme discrimination in 49 normal hearing participants (26 with chronic subjective tinnitus and 23 matched controls), with matched audiometric thresholds and supra-threshold processing, and found no statistically significant differences between groups on the assessed cognitive measures, using a two-alternative forced-choice identification task with fricatives (/s, ʃ/) and plosives (/ph, t/) presented in quiet and individualized noise cond

An Evaluation of the Temporal Integrator Processing Strategy for Cochlear Implants in Comparison to the Clinical Strategy and in Multi-Talker Noise.

OBJECTIVES: Speech perception remains challenging for cochlear-implant recipients in conditions containing background noise. The sound processing strategy of the cochlear implant transforms the acoustic signal into a pattern of electrical stimulation pulses, which are transmitted by the electrode array. Modifications to the sound processing strategy could improve the transmission of information by the cochlear implant, alleviating speech perception difficulties in noise. One such modification, the temporal integrator processing strategy (TIPS), uses a model of temporal masking to identify and

Hidden Hearing Loss Impacts the Neural Representation of Speech in Background Noise.

Many individuals with seemingly normal hearing abilities struggle to understand speech in noisy backgrounds. To understand why this might be the case, we investigated the neural representation of speech in the auditory midbrain of gerbils with "hidden hearing loss" through noise exposure that increased hearing thresholds only temporarily. In noise-exposed animals, we observed significantly increased neural responses to speech stimuli, with a more pronounced increase at moderate than at high sound intensities. Noise exposure reduced discriminability of neural responses to speech in background n

Processing speed in perceptual visual crowding.

In this study, a perceptual visual crowding paradigm was designed to quantitatively assess the detection speed of (un)crowded meaningful visual targets using eye-movement responses. This paradigm was tested in individuals with dyslexia and age-matched controls. Trials were shown on a monitor with an integrated eye tracker to 25 control and 11 dyslexic subjects without any known ocular problems. Each trial started with fixation of a central target. Next, four peripheral targets were shown (left, right, top, bottom), one being a duplicate of the central target. The duplicate was either surrounde

Who is afraid of the invisible snake? Subjective visual awareness modulates posterior brain activity for evolutionarily threatening stimuli.

Snakes were probably one of the earliest predators of primates, and snake images produce specific behavioral and electrophysiological reactions in humans. Pictures of snakes evoke enhanced activity over the occipital cortex, indexed by the "early posterior negativity" (EPN), as compared with pictures of other dangerous or non-dangerous animals. The present study investigated the possibility that the response to snake images is independent from visual awareness. The observers watched images of threatening and non-threatening animals presented in random order during rapid serial visual presentat

Comparison of clinical characteristics in patients with bilateral and unilateral tinnitus.

CONCLUSION: Discomfort from bilateral tinnitus was more frequent and severe than that from unilateral tinnitus. Also, patients with bilateral tinnitus were significantly older and tended to have a longer duration of tinnitus than those with unilateral tinnitus. Background and subjects: Although bilateral tinnitus differs from unilateral tinnitus, their treatment is identical. Clinical characteristics associated with tinnitus, including tinnitograms, were retrospectively examined in 105 patients with unilateral tinnitus and 102 with bilateral tinnitus evaluated in the center between January 201

Visuomotor discordance during visually-guided hand movement in virtual reality modulates sensorimotor cortical activity in healthy and hemiparetic subjects.

We investigated neural effects of visuomotor discordances during visually-guided finger movements. A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-compatible data glove was used to actuate (in real-time) virtual hand models shown on a display in first person perspective. In Experiment 1, we manipulated virtual hand motion to simulate either hypometric or unintentional (actuation of a mismatched finger) feedback of sequential finger flexion in healthy subjects. Analysis of finger motion revealed no significant differences in movement behavior across conditions, suggesting that between-condition
