Long-Term Risk of Reduced Cognitive Performance and Associated Factors in Discharged Older Adults with COVID-19: A Longitudinal Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of reports have suggested a deterioration in cognitive performance after recovery from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), however insufficient information is available regarding long-term brain health and risk factors related to reduced cognitive performance in advanced age. We investigated the prevalence of reduced cognitive performance and its associated factors among older adults after COVID-19. METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled older individuals (aged ≥65 years) hospitalized for COVID-19. Discharged patients were contacted after an ave

Effects of using activity diary for goal setting in occupational therapy on reducing pain and improving psychological and physical performance in patients after total knee arthroplasty: A non-randomised controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors have been reported to affect chronic pain and may lead to inactivity after total knee arthroplasty. This study aimed to determine whether the use of an activity diary for goal setting during occupational therapy would reduce pain, and improve psychological and physical performance in patients after total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: A total of 41 total knee arthroplasty participants from two cohorts were recruited in the study and allocated by convenience to either the experimental group using an activity diary (n = 20) or the control group (n = 21). Occupatio

Preliminary Real-World Evidence Supporting the Efficacy of a Remote Neurofeedback System in Improving Mental Health: Retrospective Single-Group Pretest-Posttest Study.

BACKGROUND: Neurofeedback training (NFT) has been shown to be effective in treating several disorders (eg, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], anxiety, and depression); however, little is currently known regarding the effectiveness of remote NFT systems. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study provides real-world data (N=593) to assess the efficacy of app-based remote NFT in improving brain health and cognitive performance. METHODS: Improvement was measured from pre- to postintervention of in-app assessments that included validated symptom questionnaires (the 12-item General Health

Walking (and talking) the plank: dual-task performance costs in a virtual balance-threatening environment.

We evaluated the effects of engaging in extemporaneous speech in healthy young adults while they walked in a virtual environment meant to elicit low or high levels of mobility-related anxiety. We expected that mobility-related anxiety imposed by a simulated balance threat (i.e., virtual elevation) would impair walking behavior and lead to greater dual-task costs. Altogether, 15 adults (age = 25.6 ± 4.7 yrs, 7 women) walked at their self-selected speed within a VR environment that simulated a low (ground) and high elevation (15 m) setting while speaking extemporaneously (dual-task) or not speak

Psychophsyiological reactivity during uncertainty and ambiguity processing in high and low worriers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been linked to Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), but studies experimentally manipulating uncertainty have mostly failed to find differences between GAD patients and controls, possible due to a lack of distinction between uncertainty and ambiguity. This study therefore investigated reactivity to ambiguity in addition to uncertainty in high worriers (HW) and low worriers (LW). We hypothesized an interpretation bias between the groups during ambiguity tasks, while uncertainty would facilitate threat processing of subsequent aversive

The effects of acute tryptophan depletion on costly information sampling: impulsivity or aversive processing?

RATIONALE: The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) has been implicated in both aversive processing and impulsivity. Reconciling these accounts, recent studies have demonstrated that 5-HT is important for punishment-induced behavioural inhibition. These studies focused on situations where actions lead directly to punishments. However, decision-making often involves making tradeoffs between small 'Локально' costs and larger 'global' losses. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to distinguish whether 5-HT promotes avoidance of local losses, global losses, or both, in contrast to an overall effect on reflection impuls

Association between anxiety disorder and osteoporosis risk: A population-based analysis using NHANES data.

Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease associated with increased fracture risk. Recently, its potential association with psychological conditions such as anxiety disorders has attracted growing attention. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between anxiety disorders and osteoporosis using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data and to develop a predictive model. A total of 2992 participants were included from 3 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles (1999-2004). Demographic and health-related information (such as age, sex, race, marital stat

Clinical factors affecting breath-hold performance for left-sided breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) is a treatment technique used for patients with left-sided breast cancer to move the heart further from the treatment area and thus reduce cardiac toxicity. Active participation of the patient plays a vital role in the success and efficiency of DIBH. The purpose of this study was to investigate various clinical factors that can influence breath-hold performance. METHODS: Surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) data from 72 left-sided DIBH breast cancer patients monitored with AlignRT (VisionRT) were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate breath-hold accur

The effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on subjective, autonomic and neuropsychological response in the 7.5% CO2 experimental model of anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is characterized by hypervigilance, distractibility and selective processing of negative information. There is growing evidence that prefrontal function underlies biases in threat processing and attention control in anxiety. We examined the effect of 20 min of 2 mA dorsolateral prefrontal cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) (bipolar-balanced montage) on subjective anxiety, autonomic arousal and threat processing in the 7.5% CO2 experimental medicine model of anxiety. METHODS: A between-subjects healthy volunteer double-blind randomized design compared 2 m

Anxiety, eating disorders and menstrual disturbances risk in Spanish elite female paddlers.

Affiliated athletes are frequently subject to higher levels of anxiety due to the intensity of training, competition and many other factors. This anxiety can cause alterations in their health, both physically and mentally, such as menstrual irregularities, eating disorders, etc. In this work we have analysed the anxiety levels of a population of female affiliated paddlers and the possible consequences for their health. The results showed that a third of the female paddlers analysed have a moderate/high risk of suffering from anxiety; and within this group, the less sporting experience the athl

An exploration of the relationship between expression of hostility and the anxiety disorders.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate differences between four anxiety disorder groups with respect to their levels of hostility. Patients with diagnoses of panic disorder, agoraphobia with panic, generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia were compared as regards their performance on the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ). Results showed that while the groups did not differ on their extrapunitiveness, there were significant differences on intropunitive scores, with social phobics showing the most self criticism and guilt, followed in order by the agora

Diagnostic Efficiency of Caregiver Report on the SCARED for Identifying Youth Anxiety Disorders in Outpatient Settings.

This study investigated the diagnostic and clinical utility of the parent-rated Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED-P) for detecting youth anxiety disorders. Youth ages 6 to 12 years, 11 months were recruited from 9 outpatient mental health clinics (N = 707). Consensus diagnoses were based on semistructured interviews (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children) with youth and caregivers; 31% were diagnosed with at least one anxiety disorder. Caregivers completed the SCARED-P to describe youth anxiety levels. SCARED-P scores were not con

Characterizing Underlying Cognitive Components of ADHD Presentations and Co-morbid Diagnoses: A Diffusion Decision Model Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To Explore whether subtypes and comorbidities of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) induce distinct biases in cognitive components involved in information processing. METHOD: Performance on the Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test (IVA-CPT) was compared between 150 children (aged 7 to 10) with ADHD, grouped by DSM-5 presentation (ADHD-C, ADHD-I) or co-morbid diagnoses (anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder [ODD], both, neither), and 60 children without ADHD. Diffusion decision modeling decomposed performance into cognitive components. RESULTS: C

Social anxiety is associated with impaired memory for imagined social events with positive outcomes.

Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder suggest that memory biases for negative social information contribute to symptoms of social anxiety (SA). However, it remains unclear whether memory biases in SA are related to social information, specifically, and if so, whether the valence of such information would moderate memory performance. In the present study, 197 community participants were randomised to imagine themselves as the central character in either 10 social or 10 non-social scenarios. In both conditions, half of the scenarios ended with objectively positive outcomes and half ended w

Recognition of facially expressed emotions in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated the ability to identify facially expressed emotions in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Thirty-five FMS patients and 35 healthy controls accomplished a face recognition task. Additionally, pain severity, alexithymia, depression, anxiety, psychiatric co-morbidity and medication use were assessed. The patients displayed reduced task performance in terms of more misclassifications of emotional expressions than controls. Pain severity, alexithymia, depression and anxiety were inversely related to recognition performance, with pain sev

Structure, developmental course, and correlates of children's anxiety disorder-related behavior in a Hellenic community sample.

The generality of the DSM-IV diagnostic structure for children's anxiety disorders, as measured by the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) was investigated with a Greek-language version of the scale. An exploratory factor analysis produced a six-factor solution in general accord with the DSM-IV-based theoretical structure of responding. However, a generalized anxiety factor incorporated three unexpected items interpreted as representing excessive worry, including two items intended to measure obsessions, raising the question of children's ability to discriminate the intrusiveness of vexatio
