Comparison of enamel matrix proteins and bioabsorbable membranes in the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects. A split-mouth study.

BACKGROUND: Enamel matrix proteins (EMP) have recently been introduced as a new modality for regenerative periodontal treatment. However, limited information is available concerning the comparison of the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with enamel matrix proteins and other regenerative treatment alternatives. METHODS: The aim of the present controlled clinical trial was to compare the treatment of deep intrabony periodontal defects with EMP to that with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with bioabsorbable membranes. Sixteen patients, each of whom displayed one pair of intrabony defe

Initial observations of cheek tooth abnormalities in sheep in Slovenia.

Observations were made on a small flock of 50 sheep of the native Slovenian Jezersko-Solcava breed by investigators with dental training. The aim was to determine the range of naturally occurring dental diseases, so postmortem examinations were performed on animals slaughtered for meat or culled due to disease. Additional data were obtained by examination of 25 specimens submitted for investigation of unexplained death at a pathology centre. Seventeen (34 per cent) of the flock had incisor disease but only five became clinically ill; all these five had advanced cheek tooth disease (gingival re

Common oral conditions.

Although some oral lesions, such as torus palatinus, are normal variants, and others, such as benign migratory glossitis, are self-limited, several common oral conditions require prompt diagnosis and treatment to reduce the potential for serious complications. Treatment of dental and periodontal abscesses may include incision and drainage, antibiotic therapy, pain control and dental extraction. Treatment of sialolithiasis (blockage of the salivary gland ducts) may require application of moist heat, antibiotics and surgical removal of impacted stones. Hyperkeratosis, a white patch on the oral m…

Comparison of a bioabsorbable GTR barrier to a non-absorbable barrier in treating human class II furcation defects. A multi-center parallel design randomized single-blind trial.

This multi-center single-blind study compared clinical outcomes following guided tissue regeneration (GTR) treating human Class II furcation defects with a new polylactic-acid-based bioabsorbable barrier (test treatment) or a non-absorbable ePTFE barrier (control treatment). Clinical parameters evaluated were change in vertical attachment level (VAL), horizontal attachment level (HAL), probing depth (PD), and gingival margin location (REC). Surgical treatment resulted in clinically and statistically equivalent changes when comparisons were made between test and control treatments. VAL gain was

Antibiotic indication in endodontics by Colombian dentists with different levels of training: a survey.

AIM: This study investigated how Colombian dentists with different academic levels indicate antibiotics with therapeutic purposes in endodontics. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 559 dentists in the form of an online questionnaire. RESULTS: Three hundred and twenty questionnaires were answered (57.2%). There were significant differences among respondents. For irreversible pulpitis, 140 dentists (43.7%) said they prescribe antibiotics (57.5% of general practitioners, 20.1% of specialists and 38.9% of those with Master's and/or PhD degrees), while for symptoma

Non-oral Prevotella stepping into the spotlight.

Species now affiliated to genus Prevotella have been known for decades as an integral part of human oral cavity microbiota. They were frequently isolated from patients with periodontitis or from dental root canals but also from healthy subjects. With the exception of Prevotella intermedia, they were considered opportunistic pathogens, as they were isolated also from various bacterial abscesses from the head, neck, breast, skin and various other body sites. Consequently, Prevotella were not in the focus of research activities. On the other hand, the four species found in the rumen never caused

Chronic facial pain and Meckel cave masses as the initial presentation of neurosarcoidosis: a case report.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect virtually every organ system, leading to a wide variety of clinical manifestations. Central nervous system involvement producing neurologic symptoms can occur in patients with sarcoidosis, yet rarely are these symptoms the initial manifestations of the disease. Here we present the case of a 38-year-old man who presented with a history of chronic facial pain, blurred vision, increased lacrimation, and periodontal abscesses. Physical examination revealed no evidence of infection or neoplasm. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed space-…

Fusobacterial infections: an underestimated threat.

The involvement of fusobacteria in a wide range of human and animal infection has long been recognised. Slow-growing anaerobes, often in polymicrobial culture, they are not always identified but are present mainly in the oropharynx, from where they are bloodborne to other sites or aspirated into the lung. Fusobacterium nucleatum is commonly found in periodontal disease and produces tissue irritants such as butyric acid, proteases and cytokines. It has strong adhesive properties due to the presence of lectins, and these outer-membrane proteins mediate adhesion to epithelia and tooth surfaces, a

The Fourth Dimension of Endodontic Treatment Outcomes: Patient- Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Following Root Canal Treatment by Dental Interns.

INTRODUCTION: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) capture the patient's direct perspective on treatment effectiveness. This study evaluated PROs after root canal treatment (RCT) performed by dental interns on quality of life using pre- and post-RCT Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) scores. It also examined associations between demographics, baseline pulpal/periapical diagnosis, and OHIP scores. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted at the Operative Dentistry Department of a dental institution (January-June 2023) with 317 patients requiring RCT and meeting inclusion criteria. The Wilcoxon si

Prevalence of acute periapical abscesses in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy.

AIMS: Head and neck cancer is a serious condition affecting the life of patients. Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat such conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of acute periapical abscesses (PAs) in patients who received radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data on acute PAs and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) diagnosis with or without a history of radiation therapy (RAD) was retrieved by searching the appropriate query in the database. All cases were diagnosed for acute PAs by calibrated dentists for patients admitted to urgent care. The odds ra

Hunter-gatherer dental pathology: Do historic accounts of Aboriginal Australians correspond to the archeological record of dental disease?

OBJECTIVES: Studies of hunter-gatherer oral pathology, particularly in Australia, often focus upon dental wear and caries or assume that historic studies of Aboriginal people reflect the precontact past. Consequently the range of population variation has been underestimated. In this paper dental pathology from human remains from Roonka are compared with a model of dental pathology derived from historic studies. The aim is to identify aspects of dental pathology indicative of regional or intra-population diversity. METHODS: Adult dentitions (n = 115) dating from the mid to late Holocene were r

The buccale puzzle: The symbiotic nature of endogenous infections of the oral cavity.

The indigenous, 'normal', microflora causes the majority of localized infectious diseases of the oral cavity (eg, dental caries, alveolar abscesses, periodontal diseases and candidiasis). The same microflora also protects the host from exogenous pathogens by stimulating a vigorous immune response and provides colonization resistance. How can a microflora that supports health also cause endogenous oral disease? This paradoxical host-symbiont relationship will be discussed within the dynamic of symbiosis.Symbiosis means 'life together' - it is capable of continuous change as determined by select

Multicenter evaluation of tetracycline fiber therapy: II. Clinical response.

The safety and efficacy of periodontal disease treatment by intrapocket placement of tetracycline (TC) fibers was investigated in a 60-day multicenter study conducted by selecting 4 sites in each subject with 6-10 mm pockets that bled on probing. Sites were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 test groups: TC fiber therapy, scaling, control fiber (fibers without drug), or untreated. TC fibers and control fibers were placed to fill the pocket and were maintained with a cyanoacrylate adhesive for 10(+/- 2) d. Scaling was performed for a minimum of 5 min under local anesthesia. Assessment of Digital Intraoral Periapical Radiograph for the Detection of Apical Root Resorption in Inflammatory Periapical Pathologies: A Radiovisiography Study.

Introduction Resorption often takes the form of external inflammatory root resorption. Apical periodontitis or an apical cyst is the most typical cause of external inflammatory root resorption. Failure of endodontic treatment can occur if severe apical root resorption occurs. This is due to the difficulty of reaching these sites.Apical root resorption is usually discovered during routine radiographs and is usually in its later stages. If the lesion is advanced, extraction is the only viable solution. An accurate diagnosis of incipient root resorption is essential. This research is designed to a
