The Relationship of the Temporal Branch of the Facial Nerve to the Fascial Planes of Temporal Region in Human Fetuses.

The aim of this study was to obtain information by assessing the relationship between temporal region fascial structures, fat pads, and temp … cial of zygomatic arch and ran with superficial layer of temporal fascia above without attaching to periosteum. Temporal branches of facial nerve entered between multilayered layers of temporoparietal fascia. Temporoparietal fascia became thicker on anterior and middle parts because of the localization of superficial temporal fat pad. Temporal fascia was a 2 …

Soluble VEGFR1 reverses BMP2 inhibition of intramembranous ossification during healing of cortical bone defects.

BMP2 is widely used for promotion of bone repair and regeneration. However, bone formation induced by BMP2 is quite variable. Bone forming p … n bone formation via intramembranous ossification in the defect and cartilage formation and injured periosteum, during the healing process. In contrast, treatment with BMP2 inhibited intramembranous bone formation in the defect while it promoted cartilage and endochondral bone formation in the injured periosteum compared with mice treated with PBS or sVEGFR1 …

Progression of gingival squamous cell carcinoma from early to late stage after invasive dental procedure.

Early presentation of gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is at times misdiagnosed as a benign inflammatory or reactive oral condition. Some misdiagnosed patients undergo unnecessary, invasive dental procedures, resulting in delayed cancer diagnosis and an increased risk of accelerated disease progression due to disruption of the periosteum and cortical bone. The records of 58 patients with biopsy-proven GSCC were retrospectively reviewed. The sample included 32 patients who underwent an invasive dental procedure (IDP) prior to cancer diagnosis and 26 patients who did not undergo an IDP (n…

Osteogenic Differentiation of Periosteal Cells During Fracture Healing.

Five to ten percent of fractures fail to heal normally leading to additional surgery, morbidity, and altered quality of life. Fracture healing involves the coordinated action of stem cells primarily coming from the periosteum which differentiate into the chondrocytes and osteoblasts, forming first the soft (cartilage) callus followed by the hard (bone) callus. These stem cells are accompanied by a vascular invasion that appears critical for the differentiation process and which may enable the entry of osteoclasts necessary for the remodeling of the callus into mature bone. However, more resear…

FGFR2 mutation confers a less drastic gain of function in mesenchymal stem cells than in fibroblasts.

Gain-of-function mutations in FGFR2 cause Apert syndrome (AS), a disease characterized by craniosynostosis and limb bone defects both due to abnormalities in bone differentiation and remodeling. Although the periosteum is an important cell source for bone remodeling, its role in craniosynostosis remains poorly characterized. We hypothesized that periosteal mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and fibroblasts from AS patients have abnormal cell phenotypes that contribute to the recurrent fusion of the coronal sutures. MSCs and fibroblasts were obtained from the periostea of 3 AS patients (S252W) and 3…

Apert p.Ser252Trp mutation in FGFR2 alters osteogenic potential and gene expression of cranial periosteal cells.

Apert syndrome (AS), a severe form of craniosynostosis, is caused by dominant gain-of-function mutations in FGFR2. Because the periosteum contribution to AS cranial pathophysiology is unknown, we tested the osteogenic potential of AS periosteal cells (p.Ser252Trp mutation) and observed that these cells are more committed toward the osteoblast lineage. To delineate the gene expression profile involved in this abnormal behavior, we performed a global gene expression analysis of coronal suture periosteal cells from seven AS patients (p.Ser252Trp), and matched controls. We identified 263 genes wit…

The use of autogenous periosteal grafts as barriers for the treatment of Class II furcation involvements in lower molars.

This study clinically analyzed the efficacy of a connective tissue graft including the periosteum used as a barrier to enhance new attachment and osseous regeneration. Fifteen patients, with no systemic diseases, and adult periodontitis including 2 Class II furcation involvements in lower molars comprised the study group. After completion of the initial phase of therapy, all patients were treated with full-thickness periodontal flaps, using sulcular incisions, and thorough scaling and root planing. One furca, selected at random, had a connective tissue graft, obtained from the palate and inclu…

[Patella sleeve-fracture in a boy].

Patella sleeve-fractures are a rare but significant injury, mostly affecting children aged 8-12. These avulsion fractures involve cartilage, periosteum, and bone, usually caused by forceful quadriceps contractions during knee flexion. Diagnosis can be challenging due to subtle radiographic changes, often leading to delayed treatment. Management depends on displacement severity: immobilisation versus surgery to restore extensor mechanism function. Early diagnosis and proper care are crucial to prevent complications like instability and functional impairment, as argued in this case.

Parosteal lipoma of the rib.

Parosteal lipoma is a rare benign tumor that is composed mainly of benign mature lipocytes, and it has an intimate association with the underlying periosteum of affected bone. Parosteal lipoma involving the rib is quite rare. We believe that only four cases have been previously reported in the English literature. Here we describe an exceedingly rare case of parosteal lipoma that developed in the right seventh rib, which presented in a 50-year-old man having a previous history of trauma at this site.

Use of split-thickness dermal graft in the surgical treatment of corneal and scleral defects.

We used split-thickness dermal grafts for the surgical treatment of corneal and scleral perforations in two patients and obtained excellent results. Patient 1 had severe lye burns and bilateral corneal perforations and Patient 2 had scleromalacia perforans. The dermal graft self-epithelializes and, thus, does not need to be covered by conjunctiva; is supple, without the bulkiness of other materials, particularly cartilage and periosteum; is hearty and flourishes on avascular surfaces such as cornea and sclera; has good tensile strength; and is autogenous.

Correction of depressed supratarsal sulcus by an arterial subcutaneous composite flap.

A depressed supratarsal sulcus can be filled by means of a soft-tissue arterial flap including subcutaneous tissue, galea, and periosteum. The donor site is the temporal region, and the flap is passed subcutaneously into the upper eyelid. The same type of flap can also be used as filling material in other situations, such as Treacher-Collins malar bone defects. The correction of a depressed supratarsal sulcus by anophthalmic orbits is to be done only after complete and careful adjustment of the eye prosthesis by the ocularist, or after adjustment of the socket itself.
