Spontaneous Resolution of Strangulated Small Bowel Obstruction in a Patient With Intestinal Tuberculosis After Starting Anti-tuberculosis Drugs: A Case Report.

Intestinal tuberculosis can cause strangulated small bowel obstruction. Strangulated small bowel obstruction usually requires surgery. We report a case of a patient with intestinal tuberculosis, who developed a spontaneously resolving strangulated small bowel obstruction after the commencement of anti-tuberculosis drugs. A 72-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain and ascites was noticed on abdominal ultrasonography. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a 50-mm tumor in the ileocecal region that was darkly contrasted, along with peritoneal thickening and ascites. A maligna

Tuberculous appendicitis: A review of reported cases over the past 10 years.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous appendicitis is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis without clear summarization or consensus on its management. DATA SOURCES: Case reports were gathered from several online literature databases by searching terms "tuberculosis", "tuberculous", and "appendicitis".Report eligibility criteria: Cases of appendicitis due to M. tuberculosis identified on operative histology. Exclusion criteria: appendicitis caused by a mycobacterium other than M. tuberculosis, and appendiceal tuberculosis identified incidentally during procedures for other reasons. RESULTS:

An Atypical Presentation of Tuberculous Ascites, Severe Hyponatremia, and Acute Kidney Injury in a Young Male.

A 25-year-old male who had been in good health before presenting with right lower lobe pneumonia, severe hyponatremia (Na 117 mEq/L), distension, and reduced urine output. AKI secondary to acute glomerulonephritis (GN) or interstitial nephritis was suggested by the initial workup. He was discharged for outpatient nephrology follow-up following initial stabilization with hypertonic saline and intravenous fluids; however, 2 days later, he was readmitted due to worsening fever and ascites. Tuberculous peritonitis was confirmed by paracentesis, which also showed an AFB smear and TB PCR-positive as

[A case of miliary tuberculosis with interstitial nephritis due to re-administration of rifampicin treated successfully with steroid].

A 26-year-old man was admitted to a hospital complaing of continuous high fever and abdominal swelling. As his sputum and ascites culture was positive for acid-fast bacilli and PCR-TB, he was diagnosed as miliary tuberculosis, tuberculous with pleuritis and peritonitis, and transferrd to our hospital. After initiation of treatment with isoniazid, rifampicin (RFP), ethambutol, and pyrazinamide, RFP was suspended because of direct-reacting hyperbilirubinemia. As the liver function recovered after discontinuation of RFP, low dose of RFP was re-administrated and renal dysfunction was observed. The

[A case of refractory tuberculous meningitis markedly improved by intrathecal administration of isoniazid (INH)].

We report a case of refractory tuberculous meningitis which was markedly improved by intrathecal administration of isoniazid (INH). The patient was a 35-year-old woman diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at age 25, who was being managed with steroid therapy. She was admitted to another hospital due to miliary tuberculosis at age 34, and after discharge continued with a regimen of 2 anti-tuberculosis drugs (INH. Rifampicin (RFP)). She was admitted to our hospital with severe headache and fever on June 18, 2001. She showed severe meningeal irritation, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis: Atypical and Resistant Organisms.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis remains to be one of the most frequent and serious complications of PD. In this study, existing literature has been reviewed on PD peritonitis caused by atypical organisms and antibiotic resistant organisms and their impact on patient outcomes. Although uncommon, delay in recognition of PD peritonitis caused by atypical organisms can lead to poor patient outcomes if there is a delay in diagnosis and implementation of appropriate treatment. There is also a large difference in prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections across the world with variabl

Correlation between inhibition of indicator cell migration and tuberculin hypersensitivity in patients with suspected tuberculous inflammation of the uveal tissue.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with suspected tuberculous inflammation of the uveal tissue were examined for their capacity to produce in vitro a migration inhibition factor in the presence of specific antigen. Three modifications of the capillary tube migration technique were used to demonstrate MIF. The indicator cells were guinea pig peritoneal macrophages and human peripheral blood leucoytes. A correlation was found between the migration of indicator cells influenced by lymphocytes from Mantoux-positive donors in the presence of specific antigen and the tuberculin sensitivity.

Diagnostic yield and safety of percutaneous CT-guided biopsy of retroperitoneal lesions and analysis of imaging features.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy is emerging as a preferred method for obtaining tissue samples from retroperitoneal lesions due to clear visualization of needle and vessels. PURPOSE: To assess diagnostic yield and safety of CT-guided biopsy of retroperitoneal lesions and compare CT findings in different disease categories. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective analytical study included 86 patients with retroperitoneal lesions who underwent CT-guided biopsy from December 2010 to March 2020. All procedures were performed with co-axial technique and multiple cores were obt

ROLE OF DIAGNOSTIC LAPAROSCOPY IN EVALUATION AND TREATMENT OF CHRONIC ABDOMINAL PAIN IN CHILDREN.

BACKGROUND: Chronic abdominal Pain in children is a very common cause of hospital admission. Many of them are discharged without a diagnosis even after battery of investigations. Laparoscopy plays a significant role in diagnosis and management of many causes of acute and chronic abdominal pain. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of laparoscopy as an efficient diagnostic and management tool in children with chronic abdominal pain. METHODS: A descriptive, prospective case series was collected in the department of Paediatric surgery Mayo's Hospital Lahore, over the period of

Abdominal tuberculosis revisited.

Four patients with abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) managed in the University Department of Medicine, Singapore General Hospital, are presented to highlight problems encountered in the diagnosis of this condition. Three patients had intestinal tuberculosis, one of whom had peritoneal involvement and another had possible hepatic disease. The fourth patient presented with peritoneal disease alone. Ages at presentation ranged from 25 years to 71 years. There were three females and one male. Two patients presented with symptoms of chronic illness for 10 months before the disease was diagnosed. Two oth

Dual infection: disseminated histoplasmosis and peritoneal tuberculosis in a HIV-negative immunocompetent patient. A case report.

Histoplasmosis is a dimorphic fungal infection that classically causes pulmonary disease in immunocompetent hosts and disseminated disease in the immunosuppressed. Tuberculosis has protean manifestations that overlap with histoplasmosis, and global limitations in mycological diagnostics frequently lead to misdiagnosis. We present a case of dual infection with culture-confirmed disseminated histoplasmosis and peritoneal tuberculosis in a HIV-negative, clinically immunocompetent man, whose only recognised risk factor was type 2 diabetes mellitus. This patient presented to a hospital in the Unite

18F-FDG and FDG-labeled leukocyte PET/CT in peritoneal tuberculosis.

The authors present a 20-year-old patient with clinical suspicion of acute pancreatic infection. PET/CT showed significantly higher uptake of F-FDG alone compared with FDG-labeled autologous leukocytes in peritoneal thickening and omental deposits, with no abnormal pancreatic uptake of either tracer. Further investigation led to a diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis.

Abdominal cocoon secondary to disseminated tuberculosis.

Abdominal cocoon, also known as sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, represents a rare entity where a variable length of the small bowel is enveloped by a fibrocollagenous membrane giving the appearance of a cocoon. It may be asymptomatic and is often diagnosed incidentally at laparotomy. We present a rare case of abdominal cocoon due to abdominal tuberculosis.

Ectopic decidual reaction mimicking peritoneal tubercles: a report of three cases.

Ectopic decidual reaction is commonly seen in the ovary and cervix; however, peritoneal localization is rare. Peritoneal deciduosis is usually an incidental histological finding. It may present a diagnostic dilemma by mimicking grossly peritoneal carcinomatosis or tubercles and deciduoid mesothelioma, microscopically. We report three cases of ectopic decidual reaction discovered incidentally during caesarian sections, as whitish yellow nodules resembling tubercles. Histology revealed extensive decidualisation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of ectopic decidua mimicking
