Propofol versus midazolam with or without short-acting opioids for sedation in colonoscopy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of safety, satisfaction, and efficiency outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Propofol is increasingly being used for sedation in colonoscopy; however, its benefits over midazolam (± short-acting opioids) are not well quantified. The objective of this study was to compare safety, satisfaction, and efficiency outcomes of propofol versus midazolam (± short-acting opioids) in patients undergoing colonoscopy. METHODS: We systematically searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane library (to July 30, 2018) for randomized controlled trials of colonoscopies performed with propofol versus midazolam (± short-acting opioids). We pooled odds ratios for cardior

Why donors intend to return: Motivation, satisfaction and post-donation intention in a high-demand tertiary hospital setting in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maintaining safe and adequate blood supply in low- and middle-income countries requires understanding factors influencing donor return intentions. Nigeria faces chronic blood shortages, yet evidence on determinants of return intention among blood donors in tertiary hospitals remains limited. This study assessed donor motivation, satisfaction and intention to return among blood donors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and identified factors independently associated with post-donation intention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was

Nursing Students' Satisfaction and Self-Confidence After Short-Term Clinical Preparation: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: The transition from theoretical knowledge to clinical practice poses significant challenges for nursing students globally. This critical period requires comprehensive educational support to build confidence and competence. While short-term preparatory courses have shown promise internationally, their effectiveness within the Saudi Arabian context remains understudied. This study aimed to evaluate nursing students' satisfaction and self-confidence following participation in short-term preparatory courses conducted before clinical placements at Taibah University, Saudi Ara

Delivering concussion education to pre-service teachers through the SCHOOLFirst website: Evaluating usability and satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Return-to-school processes indicate 'when' to initiate activities and 'what' activities should be accomplished, but are missing 'how' to implement the process. The SCHOOLFirst website provides the 'how' through building concussion knowledge, creating a supportive culture, and defining roles. Due to the involvement of pre-service teachers in schools during training and imminent transition to becoming teachers, it is important that pre-service teachers are trained in concussion and can optimally support current and future students. OBJECTIVE: To determine: 1) pre-service teachers' k

Trajectories of physical health-related quality of life among adults living with burn injuries: A burn model system national database investigation to improve early intervention and rehabilitation service delivery.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding trajectories of recovery in key domains can be used to guide patients, families, and caregivers. The purpose of this study was to describe common trajectories of physical health over time and to examine predictors of these trajectories. METHOD: Adults with burn injuries completed self-reported assessments of their health-related quality of life (HRQOL) as measured by the SF-12® Physical Component Summary (PCS) score at distinct time points (preinjury via recall, index hospital discharge, and at 6-, 12-, and 24 months after injury). Growth mixture modeling (GMM) was

Physiological Responses and Training Satisfaction During National Rollout of a Neurosurgical Intraoperative Catastrophe Simulator for Resident Training.

BACKGROUND: Systematic use of neurosurgical training simulators across institutions is significantly hindered by logistical and financial constraints. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate feasibility of large-scale implementation of an intraoperative catastrophe simulation, we introduced a highly portable and low-cost immersive neurosurgical simulator into a nationwide curriculum for neurosurgery residents, during years 2016 to 2019. METHODS: The simulator was deployed at 9 Society of Neurological Surgeons junior resident courses and a Congress of Neurological Surgeons education course for a cohort of 526

A long, winding trajectory of suffering with no definite start and uncertain future prospects - narratives of individuals recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

PURPOSE: Fibromyalgia is a contested illness with unknown aetiology and poorly understood development. The present aim is to explore the pre-diagnostic illness trajectory narrated by individuals recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM). METHODS: Individual interviews about the course of the illness were conducted with seven women and three men (age from early 20s to 50s) who had recently been diagnosed with FM. A narrative analysis of what the interviewees told and how the stories were narrated was conducted. RESULTS: The findings are expressed by three storylines. "Strenuous life and alert

Smart@home - supporting safety and mobility of elderly and care dependent people in their own homes through the use of technical assistance systems and conventional mobility supporting tools: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The use of technical solutions and conventional mobility supporting aids can support the independence of people into old age in their own homes. However, we found relatively few empirical investigations on the effects and costs of these systems. METHODS: The aim of the study was to investigate usability, user satisfaction and the correlation between costs and benefits of different built-in smart home solutions and conventional mobility supporting tools in the home of elderly, partially care-dependent tenants (> 65 years). A cross-sectional survey was conducted from February to Mar

Relationship between normative and self-perceived criteria for orthodontic treatment need and satisfaction with esthetics and mastication in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatments are performed to improve esthetics and masticatory functions. In general, clinical criteria are used to recommend such treatments without considering the opinion of the patient. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between technically defined orthodontic need (normative criteria) and the need for treatment perceived by adolescent patients. METHODS: A total of 215 students aged between 15 and 19 years were selected and asked to respond to a questionnaire concerning their perception of need for orthodontic treatment and their satisfaction with their

A study on the effects of modified wheelchair skills program (WSP) for hemiplegic clients.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the modified WSP for improving wheelchair skills capacity, perceived satisfaction and performance in daily activities for hemiplegia patients in Korea. The modified WSP was tailored to better fit the environment and the treatment needs of hemiplegic patients in Korea. The resulting training procedure was augmented to help hemiplegic patients understand the basic mechanics of the wheelchair. To assess the efficacy of the modified WSP, 24 hemiplegic patients were selected as subjects and WST, COPM, K-MBI, and subjective opinion surveys were utilized. The

The efficacy and efficiency of Disability Management in job-retention and job-reintegration. A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Disability management (DM) is a systematic method to ensure job-retention and job-reintegration in competitive employment for individuals with a disability. There is evidence that 'returning to work' has a positive impact on the individual, the company and on the society. However, a clear overview of the efficacy and efficiency of the DM programs is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the efficacy and efficiency of the disability management programs. Cochrane, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were searched from 1994 to 2015. METHODS: Two reviewers independently

Location, location, location: the misprediction of satisfaction in housing lotteries.

People tend to overestimate the emotional consequences of future life events, exhibiting an impact bias. The authors replicated the impact bias in a real-life context in which undergraduates were randomly assigned to dormitories (or "houses"). Participants appeared to focus on the wrong factors when imagining their future happiness in the houses. They placed far greater weight on highly variable physical features than on less variable social features in predicting their future happiness in each house, despite accurately recognizing that social features were more important than physical feature
