Effect of hopelessness on the links between psychiatric symptoms and suicidality in a vulnerable population at risk of suicide.

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of two risk factors working together on a measure of suicide probability in a highly vulnerable group who were male prisoners identified as being at risk of self harm. The first risk factor was psychiatric symptoms, including general psychiatric symptoms and symptoms of personality disorder. The second risk factor was psychological precursors of suicidal thoughts and behaviours which were defeat, entrapment, and hopelessness. Sixty-five male prisoners from a high secure prison in NW England, UK, were recruited, all of whom were considered at risk

Characterizing clinical heterogeneity in an inpatient service treating mental, substance use and concurrent disorders.

Patients diagnosed with concurrent disorders (CD)-comorbid substance use disorder with other psychiatric conditions-experience poorer clinical outcomes, and significant gaps remain in defining the optimal care path for treating CD. Toward this goal, the primary aim of this study was to characterize individual differences in substance use and psychiatric symptomology in an inpatient clinical sample using a person-centred approach. Admission assessment data from a private inpatient service treating mental disorders, substance use, and concurrent disorders was used (n = 177). Latent profile analy

The assessment of schizotypal features over two points in time.

The expression of schizotypal personality traits was assessed in mid-adolescence and again in young adulthood for three groups of offspring defined by the psychiatric diagnosis of their parents. Parental diagnoses included schizophrenic disorder (47 offspring), affective disorder (39 offspring), and 'no psychiatric disorder', or normal controls (82 offspring). Initially, schizotypal traits were assessed from video-taped semi-structured psychiatric interviews, subsequently rated by trained psychiatrists blind to the parental psychiatric status of the subjects, and/or direct clinical interviews

Personality and family history of depression in patients with affective illness.

The presence of a family history of depression may distinguish clinically important subgroups of depressed patients. Depressed patients with and without a family history of depression may differ on several clinical features. There are limited data, however, on potential differences in personality variables between patients with and without familial depression. We examined personality measures in 41 depressed subjects with and without a familial history of depression in both the depressed and remitted state. Patients with no family history of depression had significantly higher mean personality

Impulsivity across psychiatric disorders in young adults.

PURPOSE: Impulsivity is a common cognitive issue across several psychiatric illnesses but is most frequently associated with the DSM-5 Disruptive, Impulse Control and Conduct Disorders, ADHD, and addictive disorders. We hypothesized that a wide range of psychiatric disorders would be associated with elevated impulsivity, not just those commonly linked to impulsiveness. This study aimed to explore the relationship between impulsivity and various psychiatric disorders in young adults. PROCEDURES: 700 non-treatment seeking participants (aged 18-29 years) were enrolled from the general community,

Influence of psychiatric diagnoses and symptoms on HIV risk behavior in adults with serious mental illness.

HIV seroprevalence among people with serious mental illness has increased substantially in recent years. Although the prevalence of HIV behavioral risk factors has been well documented, few researchers have chosen to investigate the impact that psychopathology may have on HIV risk behavior. A review of the literature on psychiatric diagnoses related to HIV sexual risk reveals that bipolar disorder and perhaps schizophrenia are related to increased HIV risk. Further, persons in whom both Axis I and Axis II disorders are diagnosed appear to be at greater HIV behavioral risk. Research on psychiat

Psychiatric genetic counseling: A survey of Australian genetic counselors' practice and attitudes.

Genetic counseling plays a critical role in supporting individuals and their families' adaption to psychiatric conditions, addressing the multifactorial nature of these conditions in a personally meaningful and empowering way. Yet data related to the practice and attitudes of Australian genetic counselors about psychiatric genetic counseling (PGC) is limited. This survey investigated the practice of Australian genetic counselors, and their attitudes toward PGC. Genetic counselors (N = 393) were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey between March and May 2022. Forty-four genetic

Behind the scars: adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury disorder show profound personality pathology.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury is a significant clinical concern in adolescent psychiatry and frequently co-occurs with a range of psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and personality disorders. With the inclusion of non-suicidal self-injury disorder (NSSID) as a distinct diagnosis in the DSM-5, growing attention has been directed toward its relationship with established psychopathological constructs. This study investigates the association between personality pathology and NSSID in adolescent psychiatric in-patients. In particular,

Defining Autonomy in Psychiatry.

Mental illness undermines a patient's personal autonomy: the capacities of a person that enables them to live a meaningful life of their own making. So far there has been very little attention given to personal autonomy within psychiatry. This is unfortunate as personal autonomy is disturbed in different ways in psychiatric disorders, and understanding how autonomy is affected by mental illness is crucial for differential diagnosis and treatment, and also for understanding personal recovery. We will argue that disturbance of personal autonomy is related to patient's diminished quality of life

Comorbid psychiatric disorders among older adult recovering pathological gamblers.

The proliferation of state lotteries and casinos has led to an increased participation in gambling and its associated problems. Older retired adults have more opportunities to gamble and available funds than other demographic groups. For these reasons, older adults may constitute a special risk group for pathological gambling. Because substance misuse, mood, anxiety, and personality disorders are common in problem and pathological gamblers, we sought to examine rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders in 40 older adults with lifetime pathological gambling using structured assessments of known r

Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Structured Interview of Personality Organization-Revised (STIPO-R).

With the publication of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a set of dimensional criteria was added as an emerging alternative model to the diagnosis of personality disorder (PD; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Parallel to this, within the object relations conceptualization of personality pathology, a structured interview, the Structured Interview of Personality Organization (STIPO), was developed to assess pathological personality and then revised (STIPO-R). In this study, the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the STIPO-R w

The impact of psychiatric comorbidities associated with depression: a literature review.

The comorbidity with anxiety disorders has profound adverse implications on the evolution, prognosis and therapeutic responsiveness of depression, it will prolong the time required to achieve remission of the depressive episode, and patients under treatment will tend to drop out of their therapeutic regimens faster than those with depression but without anxious comorbidity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the importance of the clinical, etiopathogenetic, prognostic and especially therapeutic connotations given by the presence of psychiatric comorbidities in depression. Relationship between DSM-III avoidant and dependent personality disorders.

Avoidant personality disorder was added to the nomenclature in DSM-III without a clinical tradition or empirical findings. This report reviews four attempts to validate empirical personality disorders and presents new data. No empirical study has been successful in differentiating avoidant from dependent personality disorders. The current study replicates this overlap, finding only minor differences (dependent personality disorder had more females, avoidant personality disorder had more self-defeating traits). Avoidant and dependent personality disorders should be merged into an enlarged categ

Psychiatric disorders and management of sexual offenders in the prison psychiatric consultation unit of Marseille.

Since 2017, complaints of sexual violence have increased in France. At the same time, the management of sexual offenders has been at the center of international public health policies. The prevalence of mental disorders among sexual offenders is an essential field of research. There are some published studies on the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in sexual offenders in detention, but there are few recent published studies among French individuals who were detained. Our objectives were to determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among persons detained for sexual offenses and the l

Cannabis and Pregnancy: A Psychiatric, Medical, or General Population Issue?

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use during pregnancy may adversely affect the health of pregnant women and their fetus. Several recent surveys led in the US general population in the last decade showed an increase in cannabis use during pregnancy from 1.95 to 7%, with a 0.5% for medical-only purposes. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to investigate if an increased incidence might be due to a greater public acceptability after introduction of cannabis medical use or due to psychiatric implications and unmet needs. METHOD: 500 pregnant women (302 psychiatric patients and 198 healthy controls) were tested with the

The Utility of Neuromuscular Assessment to Identify ADHD Among Patients with a Complex Symptom Picture.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic assessment of ADHD is challenging due to comorbid psychopathologies and symptoms overlapping with other psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigate if a distinct pattern of neuromuscular dysregulation previously reported in ADHD, can help identifying ADHD in psychiatric patients with diverse and complex symptoms. METHOD: We explored the impact of neuromuscular dysregulation, as measured by The Motor Function Neurologic Assessment (MFNU), on the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD, affective disorder, anxiety disorder, or personality disorder among adults (n
