Real-world short-term VenaSeal ablation outcomes for symptomatic saphenous incompetence.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic venous insufficiency is a common vascular condition with significant resultant patient morbidity. There has been a shift … European (63.8%). Mean body mass index was 28.5 (22.2-41.4). We report a 21% rate of self-limiting phlebitis and 33 minor complication events. These include 15 cases of residual varicose veins, 9 saphenous nerve neuropraxia, 6 cases of puncture-site cellulitis and 3 deep vein thromboses. Patient demographics and primary surgeon did not have a statistically …

The differences between these two groups in blood glucose level, infectious complication, phlebitis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and duration of hospital stay after operation, and treatment cost. All data were evaluated by both intention to treat (ITT) analysis and per protocol (PP) analysis. RESULTS: There were no significant …

Aphthous Stomatitis and Laryngitis, Another Form of Presentation of an IgG4-Related Disease?

IgG4-related disease is characterized by a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate rich in IgG4-positive plasma cells, storiform fibrosis and obliterative phlebitis. It can present as parotid gland enlargement, tubulointerstitial nephritis, retroperitoneal fibrosis or pancreatitis, although nearly any organ can be affected. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with severe dysphonia and recurrent painful aphthous ulcers, with histopathological findings at the level of the larynx that revealed a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and IgG4 positivity. In addition, extensive studies were perform…

IgG4-associated cholangitis.

IgG4-associated cholangitis is the hepatobiliary manifestation of a recently characterized inflammatory systemic disease, associated with in … nfiltrates, on occasion resulting in tumefactive lesions (which can mimic malignancy), obliterative phlebitis, and fibrotic changes. Steroid treatment is the mainstay of management, but relapse is common after discontinuation of therapy or during tapering of steroids and may require further treatment.

[IgG4-related sclerosing disease].

IgG4-related sclerosing disease (IgG4-RSD) is a systemic one in which IgG4-positive plasma cells and T lymphocytes extensively infiltrate various organs. The clinical manifestations of the disease include autoimmune pancreatitis, sclerosing cholangitis, cholecystitis, sialodenitis, retroperitoneal fibrosis, tubulointestitial nephritis, interstitial pneumonia, prostatitis, inflammatory pseudotumors and lymphadenopathy, all related with significantly elevated serum IgG4 levels. Tissue fibrosis with obliterative phlebitis of the affected organs is pathologically induced. The disease occurs predom…

Naturally-occurring Sendai virus infection of athymic nude mice.

Nude (nu/nu) mice, Balb/c-derived, responded to a naturally-occurring Sendai virus infection in a different manner than conventional mice. They developed a chronic debilitating disease and a persistent viral infection of the respiratory tract with intranuclear inclusion bodies in tracheal, bronchial and bronchiolar epithelial cells, laryngeal and tracheal glandular epithelium and in type I and II alveolar cells. The infection was identified by serologic and tissue culture studies, the mouse antibody production test and ultrastructural examination of pulmonary lesions. Phlebitis of pulmonary ve…

[A case of pseudophlebitis of the great saphenous vein: focal nodular myositis of the gracilis muscle].

A case of focal myositis in a healthy 68-year-old woman is described. The patient was admitted for evaluation of a painful soft-tissue mass localised on the medial side of the left thigh, initially misdiagnosed as thrombophlebitis of the v. saphena magna. Laboratory data were normal, in particular sedimentation rate and muscle enzyme levels. After exclusion of venous thrombosis, the mass localised in the left m. gracilis was surgically removed. Histologic examination of the biopsy specimen showed muscle cell necrosis and severe inflammation, with lymphocytic infiltration leading to the diagnos…

[Surgical treatment of varices--principles and current status].

The basis of surgical treatment for varicose veins is still the stripping operation. This operation consists of four components: The "crossectomy", the stripping propper of the greater or smaller saphenous vein, the ligation of the incompetent perforating veins and the removal of the side branches. However this complete stripping procedure is not always necessary or suitable. Combination of one or two components of this operation with other techniques such as sclerotherapy may lead to results almost or just as good as the complete conventional stripping operation. These combinations are usuall

Effectiveness and Safety of Measures to Prevent Infections and Other Complications Associated With Peripheral Intravenous Catheters: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) contribute substantially to the global burden of infections. This systematic review ass … ; 95% CI, .33-.85), and catheter removal based on defined schedules potentially resulted in a lower phlebitis/thrombophlebitis incidence (10 RCTs; RR, 0.74, 95% credible interval, .49-1.01) compared with clinically indicated removal in adults. In neonates, chlorhexidine reduced the phlebitis score compared with non-chlorhexidine-containing disinfection (1 R …

Amultivariable logistic regression was performed to identify potential risk factors (e.g., age, infusion rate, infusion duration, peripheral venous catheter location, and needle gauge) for development of IRAE. RESULTS: A total of 706 administratio …

Implementation of a midline catheter service in a regional setting.

Introduction: Midline catheters have been reported to be an effective and safe means of providing patients with intravenous access within th … ttempt of two. Rates of line-related complications were less than 8%, with five documented cases of phlebitis (2.5%) and one deep vein thrombosis with no infections documented. Conclusion: Despite limited resources, a successful midline service was introduced. Future expansion will see an increase in insertor numbers providing improved access to the service …

Effects of the low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique on double-lumen central venous catheters: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheters are widely used in clinical practice, and the incidence of central venous catheter occlusion is between 25 % and 38 %. The turbulence caused by the pulsatile flushing technique is harmful to the vascular endothelium and may lead to phlebitis. The low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique is a new type of continuous infusion that ensures that the catheter is always in a keep-vein-open state by continuous low-speed flushing; hence, avoiding the problem of catheter occlusion. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of the low-speed continuous infus…

Pylephlebitis after sigmoid colonic polypectomy.

A man in his 40s presented with a 7-day history of fever and abdominal pain after polypectomy of the sigmoid colon. On physical examination, he had mild tenderness on deep palpation of the left lower abdominal quadrants without guarding, rigidity or rebound tenderness. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed the thrombosis of the inferior mesenteric vein and the portal vein. Blood cultures were positive for Escherichia coli We diagnosed him with pylephlebitis after colonic polypectomy, as a rare complication. He was started on cefmetazole and heparin. Antibiotic and anticoagulation therapy were initiate…

Objective:To investigate the clinical characteristics and principle of treatment of occult mastoiditis accompanied with periphlcbitis of sigmoid sinus in pediatrics. Result:Four cases, with a short-time acute otitis media history, complained of headache / retroauricular pain, with papillary swelling, diagnosed as occult mastoiditis accompanied with periphlcbitis of sigmoid sinus according to the results of the temporal bone CT and MR. All of them had normal tympanic membrane, normal pure tone threshold, but type B tympanogram. CT scan of temporal bone showed soft tissue shadow of mastoid proce
