OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) is a clinical condition that may require emergency intervention that is characterized by airway obstruction. The main aspect to be taken under consideration in treatment is to preserve the vocal functions as much as possible while also ensuring an open airway. This study aims to present the preliminary results of a novel surgical method that we refer to as "posterior glottoplasty," which has been performed on BVFP patients to minimize phonation disorder and achieve a better respiratory function.
METHODS: Five female patients who dev…

UNLABELLED: Timbre has been related to adjustment at the source as well as adjustments in resonance, including laryngeal height and hypopharynx area and volume. However, it is often presented in vocal pedagogy as solely related to resonance. Very little data is available on the laryngeal adjustments at both source and resonance involved in achieving various timbres across a variety of phonation types.
PURPOSE: To systematically assess the independent laryngeal adjustments at the source and independent laryngeal adjustments in the vocal tract necessary to obtain the lightest and darkest timbra…

OBJECTIVE: Supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy is an organ-preserving surgical technique used to treat laryngeal cancer. This procedure resects the vocal folds; however, it is unclear how the sound source and airway morphology are involved in phonation through the post-operative neoglottis.
METHOD: Multidetector helical computed tomography scanning was performed on two patients who had undergone supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy. The cricoid and arytenoid cartilages and the airway were visualised using three-dimensional images.
RESULTS: The mobility …

A 3 month old girl with congenital absence of the epiglottis presents with inspiratory stridor. Over the next 8 years frank obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) develops, confirmed by polysomnography. She has no difficulty in swallowing or phonation as assessed clinically and with barium swallow. This suggests that the epiglottis may help stabilize the upper airway, and any role in swallowing or phonation may, in its absence, be compensated by other mechanisms.

Dento-dental and dento-maxillary dysharmonies and maxillo-mandibular dysmorphologies are impairments that can be treated either by orthodontics and surgery, or with a combination of orthodontics and orthognatic surgery. Respiration, deglutition, phonation and succion play a predominant role in the occurrence of maxillofacial dysmorphologies. Contributing factors to such impairments include upper airway function disorders such as respiration, deglutition, phonation, sucking. Abnormal functions must be extensively studied in management of maxillofacial patients in order to achieve stable results…

To examine the role of the tensor veli palatini muscle in palatal movement, we conducted 1) quantitative measurement of palatal movement by selective stimulation of the tensor and levator muscles, and 2) EMG recording of the two muscles during phonation. The results were: 1) negligible palatal movement upon tensor stimulation, despite a marked velar elevation by levator stimulation; and 2) little EMG activity of the tensor and marked EMG activity of the levator during phonation. It was concluded that the tensor plays no role in the palatal function.

Lombard is best known for his work on the effect of noise on vocal intensity. In 1917, he applied this concept to the treatment of hysterical aphonia and described the procedure he used in a military publication. He suggested that a masking noise will interfere with the auditory monitoring system sufficiently that the patient will not be aware he has regained use of phonation. Removal of the noise from the patient's ears confirms the return of phonation, and the aphonia disappears. Credit is given to Lombard for this pioneering effort, and suggestions for present-day clinical use are made.

Simultaneous glottal transillumination or photoglottography (PGG), electroglottography (EGG), and video laryngostroboscopy were used to measure the traveling wave velocity of the vibrating vocal folds during phonation in human subjects. The duration of travel was calibrated from the PGG signal, while the displacement of the upper and lower lips of the vibrating vocal folds was calibrated from parallel laser beams projected onto the vocal folds. The mucosal wave velocity varied with the portion of the glottal cycle. The amplitude of displacement correlated positively with the intensity of phona…

Tourette syndrome is a common neurodevelopmental disorder defined by the presence of tics, stereotyped involuntary movements and phonations. Considerable evidence points to developmental abnormalities of the basal ganglia as tic substrates. Basal ganglia dysfunction does not account for important features of Tourette syndrome, including its natural history, male predominance, and the characteristic quality and distribution of tics. The latter mainly involve eye, face, and head movements, in addition to a variety of simple to complex phonations. A major normal function of these movements, and o…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of phonation into tubes in air and tubes submerged in water on air pressure variables and vocal fold adduction in subjects with different voice conditions.
METHODS: Forty-five participants representing four vocal conditions were included: (1) subjects diagnosed with normal voice and without voice training, (2) subjects with normal voice with voice training, (3) subjects with muscle tension dysphonia, and (4) subjects with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Participants phonated into different kinds of tubes (drinking straw, 5 mm…

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to observe the effect of two types of tubes on vocal tract bidimensional and tridimensional images.
METHODS: Ten participants with hyperfunctional dysphonia were included. Computerized tomography was performed during production of sustained [a:], followed by sustained phonation into a drinking straw, and then repetition of sustained [a:]. A similar procedure was performed with a stirring straw after 15 minutes of vocal rest. Anatomic distances and area measures were obtained from computerized tomography midsagittal and transversal images. Vocal tract total vol…

High-speed videoendoscopy is currently used in studies of voice mechanisms of phonation (e.g., the voice source can be examined with a high sampling rate, from 1000 to over 8000 frames per second), and in phonation onset or offset. High-speed imaging is also useful in linguistic studies and in the examination of different artistic sing …
