Vibrational behaviors, piezoelectricity, spin-splitting, and carrier mobility in Janus HWSZ (Z = N, P, As) monolayers.

Janus two-dimensional (2D) materials provide a versatile platform for symmetry-driven physics. However, the influence of surface functionalization on their intrinsic properties remains an open question. In this Letter, we propose and systematically investigate a class of Janus materials formed by the one-side hydrogenation of the Janus WSZ (Z = N, P, As) or HWSZ monolayers using first-principles density functional theory. Asymmetric hydrogenation acts as an additional symmetry-breaking mechanism, markedly reshaping the band structure and strengthening spin-orbit coupling. This transition yield

Excitonic Structure and Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Halide Perovskites.

Layered two-dimensional halide perovskites (2D HPs) have emerged as a versatile platform for studying strongly bound excitons in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, structural symmetry breaking, and pronounced coupling to lattice vibrations. In this Mini-Review, we focus on the monolayer limit of this class of materials and highlight recent progress in understanding excitonic fine structure and optical selection rules, chiral and spin-dependent optical response, exciton-phonon coupling and exciton relaxation pathways, and the breakdown of simple band-edge pictures in 2D HPs in which organic a

Exploring electron spin dynamics in spin chains using defects as a quantum probe.

We investigate the quantum dynamics of the electron spin resonance of topological defects (edge state) in dimerized chains. These objects are discontinuities of the spin chain protected by the properties of the global system leading to a quantum many-body multiplet protected from the environment decoherence. Despite recent achievements in the realization of isolated and finite spin chains, the potential implementation in quantum devices needs the knowledge of the relaxation and decoherence sources. Our study reveals that electron spin lattice relaxation is governed at lowest temperatures by ph

On-the-fly training of polynomial machine learning potentials in computing lattice thermal conductivity.

The application of first-principles calculations for predicting lattice thermal conductivity (LTC) in crystalline materials, in conjunction with the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation, has gained increasing popularity. In this calculation, the determination of force constants through first-principles calculations is critical for accurate LTC predictions. For material exploration, performing first-principles LTC calculations in a high-throughput manner is now expected, although it requires significant computational resources. To reduce computational demands, we integrated polynomial machine l

Room-Temperature High-Performance Thermoelectric Bi0.6 Sb0.4 Te: Elimination of Detrimental Band Inversion in BiTe.

Room-temperature thermoelectric materials are the key to miniaturizing refrigeration equipment and have great scientific and social implications, yet their application is hindered by their extreme scarcity. BiTe exhibiting strong spin-orbit coupling peaks ZT at 600 K. Herein, we discover the synergy effect of Sb doping in BiTe that eliminates the detrimental band inversion and leads to an overlap of conduction band (CB) and valence band that significantly increases the S from 33 to 124 μV K-1 . In addition, this effect enhances the μ from 58 to 92 cm2  V-1  s-1 owing to the sharp increase in t

Enhanced Superconductivity and Rashba Effect in a Buckled Plumbene-Au Kagome Superstructure.

Plumbene, with a structure similar to graphene, is expected to possess a strong spin-orbit coupling and thus enhances its superconducting critical temperature (Tc ). In this work, a buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure grown by depositing Au on Pb(111) is investigated. The superconducting gap monitored by temperature-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy shows that the buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure not only has an enhanced Tc with respect to that of a monolayer Pb but also possesses a higher value than what owned by a bulk Pb substrate. By combining angle-resolv

High-order replica bands in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3 revealed by polarization-dependent photoemission spectroscopy.

The mechanism of the enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3 has been enthusiastically studied and debated over the past decade. One specific observation has been taken to be of central importance: the replica bands in the photoemission spectrum. Although suggestive of electron-phonon interaction in the material, the essence of these spectroscopic features remains highly controversial. In this work, we conduct angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3 using linearly polarized photons. This configuration enables unambiguous characterization of t

Ab initio refinement of the thermal equation of state for bcc tantalum: the effect of bonding on anharmonicity.

We report a detailed ab initio study for body-centered-cubic (bcc) Ta within the framework of the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) to refine its thermal equation of state and thermodynamic properties. Based on the excellent agreement of our calculated phonon dispersion curve with experiment, the accurate thermal equations of state and thermodynamic properties are well reproduced. The thermal equation of state (EOS) and EOS parameters are considerably improved in our work compared with previous results by others. Furthermore, at high temperatures, the excellent agreement of our obtained therma

Debye temperature of metallic nanowires--an experimental determination from the resistance of metallic nanowires in the temperature range 4.2 K-300 K.

We have studied the resistance of metallic nanowires (silver and copper) as a function of the wire diameter in the temperature range 4.2 K-300 K. The nanowires with an average diameter of 15 nm-200 nm and length 6 microm were electrochemically deposited using polycarbonate membranes as template from AgNO3 and CuSO4, respectively. The wires after growth were removed from the membranes by dissolving the polymer in dichloromethane and their crystalline nature confirmed by XRD and TEM studies. The TEM study establishes that the nanowires are single crystalline and can have twin in them. The resist

Comprehensive first-principles analysis and device simulations of vacancy-ordered D2CeX6 double perovskites for high-efficiency lead-free solar cells.

The quest for efficient and durable absorber materials has steered attention toward vacancy-ordered double perovskites, which exhibit tunable band gaps and strong optical absorption, making them promising candidates for next-generation solar cell architectures. In particular, lead-free vacancy-ordered halide double perovskites have emerged as viable alternatives to toxic Pb-based counterparts. In this study, we systematically investigate the structural, electronic, charges density, mechanical, optical, phonon stability, molecular dynamics (MD), population analysis and photovoltaic properties o

Moiré-Engineering-Induced Counteractive Control of Thermal and Electrical Transport in MoSe2/WSe2 Heterostructure.

Moiré engineering provides a powerful method for controlling electrical transport in two-dimensional semiconductors. Meanwhile, moiré engine … ve state. This demonstrates that the moiré superlattice provokes different rectifying responses for phonons and electrons. Decreasing the period of the moiré superlattice induces a pronounced enhancement of the asymmetry in the electronic density of states, while the thermal asymmetry is suppressed due to stronger interlayer coupling. These findings furni …

Higher hydrogen fractions in dielectric polymers boost self-healing in electrical capacitors.

Electrical capacitors are omnipresent in modern electronic devices, in which they swiftly release large portions of energy on demand. The capacitors may suffer from arc discharges due to local structural heterogeneities in their components and inappropriate exploitation practices. High energies of the arc discharge are transferred as phonons to the electrode and dielectric film, which burn out locally. The dielectric breakdown takes place. The complete burnout leads to the isolation of the failed region and the capacitor's self-healing. The emerging soot can form a semiconducting channel and d…

Modeling of Spin Crossover in Linear Trinuclear Complexes: Effects of External Pressure.

In the present study, a model is suggested to explain the course of spin transformation in crystals containing linear trinuclear iron(II) clusters as structural units. The energy spectrum of an isolated trimer is described with due allowance of the effects of the cubic crystal field formed by the nearest surrounding of each FeII ion as well as by consideration of intracluster interactions in the nearest neighbor approximation. The intercluster cooperative interaction promoting the spin transition is assumed to arise from the coupling of molecular modes with phonons, that is, a feature characte…

Giant Thermal Switching via Phase Transition in MoTe2.

Designing materials with tailor-made thermal properties is an important challenge in current condensed matter and nanoscience, particularly for the implications on efficient thermal management in electronics and for applications related to energy harvesting such as thermoelectricity. Even more interesting is the possibility to dynamically access different heat conduction states, as it potentially leads to the real-time control of heat flow. Here, we leverage phase-engineering in MoTe2, a 2D van der Waals transition metal dichalcogenide, showing that the thermal conductivity undergoes a giant i

Metallic hydrogen confined by graphene.

The metallization of hydrogen is a prerequisite for the emergence of superconducting properties, along with those of hydrides. Chemical precompression has enabled a class of high-transition-temperature superconductors based on hydrogen-rich hydrides, whereas direct metallization of molecular hydrides remains challenging. In this study, we demonstrate the metallization of hydrogen confined within fixed two-dimensional graphene channels, which provide a nanoscale environment for effective compression. The confined hydrogen forms compressed molecular hydrides whose intermolecular H-H separations

Designing Optically Addressable Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Ultrasmall Nanodiamonds: Insights from First-Principles Calculations.

Ultrasmall nanodiamonds (USNDs) are promising platforms for fluorescent and quantum-sensing applications. Here we present first-principles electronic structure calculations of nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centers in USNDs, and we investigate their optical addressability as a function of the surface termination. We consider both isolated nanoparticles and arrays of USNDs with different degrees of packing, and we include quantum vibronic effects in our analysis, using stochastic methods. We find that the NV- can be stabilized in a negative charge state if the nanoparticles are terminated by fluorine,

The Carrier Dynamics of Chiral Gold Nanoparticles.

Chiral plasmonic nanoparticles exhibit strong, tailorable chiral response in the visible spectrum, making them ideal platforms for studying light-matter interactions. Here, we investigated the ultrafast carrier dynamics in chiral gold nanoparticles under linearly and circularly polarized light. Through femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we investigate the plasmon resonance broadening and quantitatively determine the electron-phonon coupling constant. We then decode the chiral-selective carrier dynamics using circularly polarized excitation. A key finding is that strong spin-orbit c
