A 38-year-old woman hospitalized for delivery after treatment for infertility with lymphocyte transfusions from her husband developed severe hepatopathy. On the basis of findings in a hepatic specimen obtained by biopsy, the authors diagnosed hepatic veno-occlusive disease. In scintigrams that used Tc-99m phytate, a long, narrow defect was found that extended from the outer part of the right lobe of the liver to the junction of the hepatic veins and the inferior vena cava. In SPECT of the liver performed with Tc-99m phytate, the defect corresponded to the region of the right hepatic vein.

An early effect of zinc deficiency in rats is loss of appetite with consequent malnourishment. To obviate the need for pair-feeding, rats were fed liquid semipurified diets by gastric tube feeding. Rats tube fed a zinc-deficient diet at a daily rate of 90-110 g/kg thrived for 6-7 days and then rapidly became seriously ill. Improving the nutritional quality of Fe in maize (Zea mays) represents a biofortification strategy to alleviate iron deficiency anemia. Number of heterotrophic bacteria ability to decompose organic phosphorus compounds and the level of phosphatase activity in the sand of two marine beaches (southern coast of the Baltic Sea) differing in the level of anthropopressure were studied. We examined the effects of ingestion of five types of insoluble fibre on growth and Zn absorption in rats fed a marginally Zn-deficient diet (6.75 mg (0.103 mmol) Zn/kg diet) with or without added sodium phytate (12.6 mmol/kg diet).
