Neurological abnormalities in the 'cri-du-chat' syndrome.

An unusual case of the cri-du-chat syndrome is described in a 6½ year old boy, who, as well as attacks of stridor and choking, showed disorders of spatial perception and cerebellar signs in the form of nystagmus, clumsiness of the hands, and ataxia. Pyramidal signs were also present. He was only mildly retarded mentally. Psychological testing showed that he had a severe deficit for number processing, and also constructional apraxia. Surprisingly, his vocabulary was quite good, as was his reading capacity. Chromosome analysis showed a very small deletion of the short arm of the group B chromoso

Congenital amusia and academic performance among Colombian university students.

BACKGROUND: Congenital amusia is a rare neurogenetic and neuropsychological condition which hinders the ability to recognize variations in all aspects of a musical piece. Although previous studies have determined the prevalence of congenital amusia in the general population, few have studied its presence among university students. Findings regarding the association between this condition and academic performance are equivocal, although evidence suggests that musical training improves scholastic achievement. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on a sample of 383 university students,

Auditory backward masking deficits in children with reading disabilities.

Studies evaluating temporal auditory processing among individuals with reading and other language deficits have yielded inconsistent findings due to methodological problems () and sample differences. In the current study, seven auditory masking thresholds were measured in fifty-two 7- to 10-year-old children (26 diagnosed with reading disability [RD], 26 without reading disability). Hierarchic multiple regression analyses indicated that RD status predicted performance only in the backward-bandpass noise (p<.05) and backward notched-noise conditions (p<.05), suggesting both temporal and spectra

Dichotic pitch: a new stimulus distinguishes normal and dyslexic auditory function.

Two patterns of appropriately filtered acoustic white noise can be binaurally fused by the human auditory system to extract pitch and location information that is not available to either ear alone. This phenomenon is called dichotic pitch. Here we present a new method for generating more effective and useful dichotic pitch stimuli. These novel stimuli allow the psychophysical assessment of dichotic pitch detection thresholds. We show that dichotic pitch detection is significantly impaired in individuals with developmental dyslexia, as compared to average readers. These results suggest a low-le

Acoustic reflex thresholds: variability and distribution effects.

Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz from 1833 ears were subjected to multiple linear regression analyses using a stepwise inclusion model to determine the effects of hearing losses in the 500- to 4000-Hz range for each of the activators. Although statistically significant regression equations were developed, these accounted for only 1 to 47% of the variance of ART levels. In light of the wide variance of ARTs unexplainable directly from audiometric data, it was deemed more appropriate to consider the range of ARTs from the standpoint of the sampling distribution of ARTs

Psychoacoustical tuning curves in audiology.

The correlation between classic masking patterns and psychoacoustical tuning curves is discussed quantitatively. A simplified method to measure such tuning curves in clinical use is described. They are shown to be insensitive to the frequency dependence of the hearing loss. Tuning curve data of six different groups including normal and hard-or-hearing observers are given: normal hearing, conductive hearing loss, degenerative hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, otosclerosis and Menière's disease. The resulting tuning curve data indicate that the frequency resolving power of the four group

Attention to Pseudotone Melodies Enhances Cortical But Not Brainstem Responses in Humans.

Auditory selective attention, the ability to focus on specific sounds while ignoring competitors, enables communication in complex soundscapes. Though attention clearly modulates cortical responses to sound, whether and where this modulation occurs in subcortical structures remains disputed. Here, we use electroencephalography to record cortical and subcortical (auditory brainstem responses, ABRs) activity during a selective attention task. Human participants (18 males, 17 females, 1 of either sex) attend to a three-note melody in one pitch range presented to one ear while ignoring a competing

An Examination of Vocal Tract Acoustics following Wendler's Glottoplasty.

PURPOSE: To investigate the formant frequency (FF) features of transgender females' (TFs) voice after Wendler's glottoplasty surgery and compare these levels with age-matched healthy males and females. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled prospective. METHODS: 20 TFs and 20 genetically male and female age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. The fundamental frequency (F0) and FFs F1-F4 were obtained from TF speakers 6 months after surgery. These levels were compared with those of healthy controls. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed that the median F0 values were similar between TFs an

Prevalence of stereotypical responses to mistuned complex tones in the inferior colliculus.

The human auditory system has an exceptional ability to separate competing sounds, but the neural mechanisms that underlie this ability are not understood. Responses of inferior colliculus (IC) neurons to "mistuned" complex tones were measured to investigate possible neural mechanisms for spectral segregation. A mistuned tone is a harmonic complex tone in which the frequency of one component has been changed; that component may be heard as a separate sound source, suggesting that the mistuned tone engages the same mechanisms that contribute to the segregation of natural sounds. In this study,

A new procedure for measuring peripheral compression in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners.

Forward-masking growth functions for on-frequency (6-kHz) and off-frequency (3-kHz) sinusoidal maskers were measured in quiet and in a high-pass noise just above the 6-kHz probe frequency. The data show that estimates of response-growth rates obtained from those functions in quiet, which have been used to infer cochlear compression, are strongly dependent on the spread of probe excitation toward higher frequency regions. Therefore, an alternative procedure for measuring response-growth rates was proposed, one that employs a fixed low-level probe and avoids level-dependent spread of probe excit

Effect of masker level on overshoot in running- and frozen-noise maskers.

Masked thresholds were measured with running- and frozen-noise maskers. The 5-kHz signal was 2 ms in duration. The masker was low-pass noise (20 Hz-10 kHz); its total duration was 300 ms. The overall level of the masker was 30, 50, or 70 dB SPL. The onset of the signal was delayed by 0, 3, 8, 18, 198, or 278 ms relative to the onset of the masker. In all frozen-noise measurements, the signal was added to the same fine structure of the noise. Overshoot in frozen noise was measured for two starting phases of the signal that led to a 10-dB difference for large signal-onset delays. In all three co

Effects of acoustic overstimulation on spectral and temporal processing in the amphibian auditory nerve.

Activity of isolated auditory-nerve fibers in tree frogs (Eleutherodactylus coqui) exposed to continuous 3-min tones of different intensities at their characteristic frequencies (CFs) was recorded. Period histograms show a retardation in the preferred phase of discharge during and after the cessation of the exposure. Postexposure phase shift is concomitant with an elevation in CF thresholds and related to the level of tone exposure above threshold. Vector strength does not show comparable trends of change; postexposure shifts are related to preexposure CF thresholds. Recovery of phase retardat

Detection of temporal gaps in sinusoids by normally hearing and hearing-impaired subjects.

A two-alternative forced-choice task was used to measure psychometric functions for the detection of temporal gaps in a 1-kHz, 400-ms sinusoidal signal. The signal always started and finished at a positive-going zero crossing, and the gap duration was varied from 0.5 to 6.0 ms in 0.5-ms steps. The signal level was 80 dB SPL, and a spectrally shaped noise was used to mask splatter associated with the abrupt onset and offset of the signal. Two subjects with normal hearing, two subjects with unilateral cochlear hearing loss, and two subjects with bilateral cochlear hearing loss were tested. The i

Psychophysics and neurophysiology of repetition noise processing in a vertebrate auditory system.

The psychophysics and neurophysiology of repetition noise (RN) processing was studied in the goldfish. RN is the sum of a noise waveform with its delayed (by T s) repetition, which may be attenuated (by A dB), and inverted relative to the undelayed signal. Such a signal has a periodic spectrum with peaks separated by 1/T Hz, and a prominence in its autocorrelation function at T s. In usual environments, RN contains information about sound-reflecting surfaces. Delays in the range of 0.5-20 ms create pitch sensations in man. Psychophysical experiments using classical respiratory conditioning inv

Longitudinal Evaluation of Auditory and Speech Performance in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients Using IT-MAIS, MESP, CAP, and SIR Scales.

Considerable variability in auditory and speech outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients has raised ongoing debate regarding whether early auditory perception directly determines later speech intelligibility, particularly in tonal language environments where pitch cues are critical for communication. This longitudinal study evaluated 64 prelingually deaf children aged 1-5 years over 12 months following unilateral implantation, integrating four standardized behavioral scales-the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS), Categories of Auditory Performance (

Avoidance learning facilitates temporal processing in the primary auditory cortex.

The primary auditory cortex is now known to be involved in learning and memory, as well as auditory perception. For example, spectral tuning often shifts toward or to the frequency of the conditioned stimulus during associative learning. As previous research has focused on tonal frequency, less is known about how learning might alter temporal parameters of response in the auditory cortex. This study addressed the effects of learning on the fidelity of temporal processing. Adult male rats were trained to avoid shock that was signaled by an 8.0 kHz tone. A novel control group received non-contin

Music Perception and Music-Related Quality of Life in Adult Cochlear Implant Users: Exploring the Need for Music Rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) users face difficulties in accurately perceiving basic musical elements such as pitch, melody, and timbre. Music significantly affects the quality of life (QoL) of CI users. Individually and culturally influenced music perception exceeds psychophysical measures in capturing the subjective music enjoyment of CI users. Understanding the music perception, enjoyment, and habits of CI users is crucial for approaches to improve music-related QoL (MuRQoL). Therefore, this study aims to investigate music perception skills, experiences, and participation in music activ

Articulatory effects on perceptions of men's status and attractiveness.

Research on heterosexual mating has demonstrated that acoustic parameters (e.g., pitch) of men's voices influence their attractiveness to women and appearance of status and formidability to other men. However, little is known about how men's tendency to clearly articulate their speech influences these important social perceptions. In the current study, we used a repeated-measures design to investigate how men's articulatory clarity or conformity influenced women's (N = 45) evaluations of men's attractiveness for both short- and long-term relationships, and men's (N = 46) evaluations of physica
