Nitrogen-doped carbon dots amplify growth-promoting effects in Arabidopsis thaliana via a "Maternal Stress-Progeny Benefit" indirect regulation mode.

Addressing the high cost, large dosage, heavy metal risks of traditional nanomaterials, and public concerns over transgenic breeding, this work used metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CNDs) as a stress inducer in Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) to validate the "Maternal Stress-Progeny Benefit" strategy for adaptive memory seed breeding. Results showed that CND exposure in maternal (F1) plants significantly activated superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). CNDs were absorbed by roots and inherited in F2 seeds, establishi

Superior haplotypes for transforming crop breeding.

A standardized superior haplotype framework, validated across cereals, oilseeds and legumes, resolves genetic architecture overlooked by the SNP-based approach and guides targeted breeding for developing climate-resilient crops. Climate change and the rapid rise in the global population are exerting immense pressure on limited natural and genetic resources. Meeting future food demands requires accelerated genetic gain under rapidly changing environmental conditions. Advances in genomics, supported by large-scale sequencing of diverse crop germplasm, have enabled the mapping of key genes and th

SSR-based paternity analysis in citronella polycross breeding: progress and remaining challenges.

Polycross breeding offers a promising strategy to introduce genetic variation in clonally propagated crops such as citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus), where limited genetic diversity constrains breeding progress. Biradar and colleagues recently employed SSR markers to identify pollen donors among half‑sib progenies from four commercial cultivars, reporting identification of potential paternal parents for five of eleven progenies. Three methodological considerations warrant careful attention. First, the paternity assignment success rate (45%) is substantially lower than the 79-99% recovery rat

Faba bean populations already contain the inbreds needed for breeding.

Highly inbred individuals are naturally present in faba bean populations and should be used for rapid and cost-efficient development of line and synthetic cultivars. Producing inbred lines in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) breeding is, although crucial, a long, costly and laborious process due to the partial allogamy of the crop. However, in any genetically diverse and open pollinating faba bean population, this particular reproduction system leads to the so-called identity disequilibrium, resulting in a significant proportion of individuals being highly inbred. This study presents a cost-efficient

Development of molecular markers for marker-assisted breeding and quality evaluation of Aconitum carmichaelii cultivars.

BACKGROUND: Aconitum carmichaelii (AC), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, provides substantial economic benefits to the pharmaceutical industry and rural development. Its broad genetic diversity has led to multiple cultivars with distinct biological traits. However, accurately identifying these cultivars is challenging due to the morphological similarities, particularly at the seedling stage. Misidentifying cultivars or selecting inappropriate cultivation regions may lead to crop failure. Moreover, the chemical profiles of different cultivars remain insufficiently characterized. Therefore,

Genetic diversity in male and female landraces of teasel gourd in north-eastern India and strategies for crop improvement through induced monocliny.

BACKGROUND: Teasel gourd is an important, indigenous, vegetatively propagated, high-value, underutilized cucurbit vegetable crop grown in South and Southeast Asia. Due to its wider adaptability, it is grown from plains to mid-hills. The crop is lacking in research, primarily related to the extent of genetic diversity in the region and crop improvement, which is further constrained by dioecism. To assess the genetic diversity in male and female populations of teasel gourd based on morphological traits and microsatellite makers and the response of AgNO3 to induce monocliny, seventy genotypes, in

DArTseq-based SNP markers reveal high genetic diversity among early generation fall armyworm tolerant maize inbred lines.

Diversity analysis using molecular markers serves as a powerful tool in unravelling the intricacies of inclusivity within various populations and is an initial step in the assessment of populations and the development of inbred lines for host plant resistance in maize. This study was conducted to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of 242 newly developed S3 inbred lines using 3,305 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and to also assess the level of homozygosity achieved in each of the inbred lines. A total of 1,184 SNP markers were found highly informative, with a me

A single-base deletion in exon 2 of Hd1 delineates monogenic recessive photoperiod insensitivity in aromatic Joha rice: a novel allele for seasonal adaptability.

BACKGROUND: Assam's aromatic Joha rice is a unique rice class famous for its aroma, taste, and nutritional benefits, which fetch high market prices in domestic and international markets. Joha landraces are inherently poor yielders due to their strong aroma and predominantly photoperiod sensitivity. Hybridization involving non-aromatic HYVs improves yield with concomitant loss of quality. In this context, mutation breeding, a sustainable approach where genetic mutations are induced to create desirable traits, often provides useful allelic variation in specific morpho-agronomic traits. The prese

Multiplexed Host-Induced Gene Silencing of Aspergillus flavus Genes Confers Aflatoxin Resistance in Groundnut.

Aflatoxins are immunosuppressive and carcinogenic secondary metabolites, produced by the filamentous ascomycete Aspergillus flavus, that are hazardous to animal and human health. In this study, we show that multiplexed host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) of Aspergillus flavus genes essential for fungal sporulation and aflatoxin production (nsdC, veA, aflR, and aflM) confers enhanced resistance to Aspergillus infection and aflatoxin contamination in groundnut (<20 ppb). Comparative proteomic analysis of contrasting groundnut genotypes (WT and near-isogenic HIGS lines) supported a better understa

Optimization of pig manure-derived biochar for ammonium and phosphate simultaneous recovery from livestock wastewater.

Livestock wastewater has led to serious eco-environmental issues. To effectively treat livestock wastewater and realize the resource utilization of livestock solid waste, manure waste has been widely used to prepare biochar for the recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, fresh biochar has a poor ability to adsorb phosphate due to its negative charge. To overcome the defect, the proportion of biochar samples prepared at 400 °C and 700 °C was optimized under a mass ratio of 2:3 to obtain mixed biochar PM 4-7, achieving the purpose of enhanced ammonium and phosphate recovery in livestock wa

Evaluation of pancreatic δ- cells as a potential target site of graphene oxide toxicity in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) fish.

In continuation to our previous investigations on graphene oxide (GO) as an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC), in the present experiment, we have investigated endocrine pancreas of Japanese medaka adults focusing on δ-cells in the islet organs as an endpoint. Breeding pairs of adult male and female fish were exposed to 0 mg/L (control) or 20 mg/L GO by continuous immersion (IMR) for 96 h, or to 0 µg/g or 100 µg/g GO by a single intraperitoneal (IP) administration and depurated 21 days in a GO-free environment. Histological investigations indicated that the endocrine cells are concentrated in

The groundnut improvement network for Africa (GINA) germplasm collection: a unique genetic resource for breeding and gene discovery.

Cultivated peanut or groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a grain legume grown in many developing countries by smallholder farmers for food, feed, and/or income. The speciation of the cultivated species, that involved polyploidization followed by domestication, greatly reduced its variability at the DNA level. Mobilizing peanut diversity is a prerequisite for any breeding program for overcoming the main constraints that plague production and for increasing yield in farmer fields. In this study, the Groundnut Improvement Network for Africa assembled a collection of 1,049 peanut breeding lines, va

Animal board invited review: Germplasm technologies for use with poultry.

Over the last century, several reproductive biotechnologies beyond the artificial incubation of eggs were developed to improve poultry breeding stocks and conserve their genetic diversity. These include artificial insemination (AI), semen storage, diploid primordial germ cell (PGC) methodologies, and gonad tissue storage and transplantation. Currently, AI is widely used for selection purposes in the poultry industry, in the breeding of turkeys and guinea fowl, and to solve fertility problems in duck interspecies crosses for the production of mule ducklings. The decline in some wild game specie

Environmental factors affecting the conception rates of nulliparous and primiparous dairy cattle.

Dairy cattle must allocate energy to milk production and reproduction. Therefore, understanding the environmental factors that affect conception rates in nulliparous and primiparous cows is helpful in appropriate feeding management strategies before and after calving. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of environmental factors before and after the first calving on the conception rate, representing the starting point of milk production. The records of the first artificial insemination (AI) from Holstein nulliparous cows (n = 533,672) and primiparous cows (n = 51

Understanding the genetic and molecular constitutions of heterosis for developing hybrid rice.

The wide adoption of hybrid rice has greatly increased rice yield in the last several decades. The utilization of heterosis facilitated by male sterility has been a common strategy for hybrid rice development. Here, we summarize our efforts in the genetic and molecular understanding of heterosis and male sterility together with the related progress from other research groups. Analyses of F1 diallel crosses show that strong heterosis widely exists in hybrids of diverse germplasms, and inter-subspecific hybrids often display higher heterosis. Using the elite hybrid Shanyou 63 as a model, an immo

Genome-Wide Identification of the Aconitase Gene Family in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and CRISPR-Based Functional Characterization of SlACO2 on Male-Sterility.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most cultivated vegetables in the world due to its consumption in a large variety of raw, cooked, or processed foods. Tomato breeding and productivity highly depend on the use of hybrid seeds and their higher yield, environmental adaption, and disease tolerance. However, the emasculation procedure during hybridization raises tomato seed production costs and labor expenses. Using male sterility is an effective way to reduce the cost of hybrid seeds and ensure cultivar purity. Recent developments in CRISPR genome editing technology enabled tomato breed

Effect of shading and grafting on yield and quality of tomato.

BACKGROUND: The need to increase marketable tomato yields and decrease losses due to sunburn and disease during the summer motivates farmers to adopt additional cultural practices such as shading and grafting. To investigate complex interactions among grafting, shading, and tomato cultivar, grafted and ungrafted tomatoes (cv. 'Optima' F1 and cv. 'Big Beef' F1 ) were grown in the soil under net-house cover, using pearl and red nets, and in unshaded conditions (open fields). Tomato fruit at the red stage of maturity were used for the analysis of quality traits, and total and marketable yields we
