Mistletoe lectin I (ML-I) is a major active component in plant extracts of Viscum album that is increasingly used in adjuvant cancer therapy. ML-I exerts potent immunomodulating and cytotoxic effects, although its mechanism of action is largely unknown. The IL-36 family, including IL-36α, IL-36β, IL-36γ, and IL-36R antagonist, belong to the IL-1 superfamily. It was reported that IL-36 plays a role in immune diseases. However, it remains unclear how IL-36 regulates inflammation. We tested monoclonal IgM anti-GM1 and asialo-GM1 antibodies from 6 patients with chronic motor neuropathies for binding to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from three stains of Campylobacter jejuni. Four of the 6 patients showed strong reactivity with LPS from at least one of the three C. jejuni strains tested as shown by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or western blot. Preabsorption with GM1 or asialo-GM1, or blocking with cholera toxin, prevented antibody binding to LPS.
