OBJECTIVE: Data synthesis on haemostasis effects of cristalloids and colloids and clinical implications for their use for plasma volume replacement.
DATA SOURCES: Data were searched in the Medline database from 1954 to 2000 using the following key-words: cristalloids, colloids, albumin, gelatin, dextran, hydroxyethyl starch, haemostasis, von Willebrand disease, haemodilution.
DATA EXTRACTION: Publications from 1954 to 1990 were selected depending on the quality of their methodology. Most of articles published after 1990 and all types including case report were accepted.

Plasma-cell granuloma of the mediastinum is an unusual non-neoplastic lesion; a case of rare mediastinal localization is reported. Only the histopathological examination leads to a correct diagnosis. Since the possibility of local recurrence has been described, total excision is requested. Video-assisted thoracic surgery technique may be difficult to use in the management of these mediastinal tumors due to adhesions between the mass and the surrounding tissues. Complete open resection is the treatment of choice.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether tests for plasma metanephrines, the o-methylated metabolites of catecholamines, offer advantages for diagnosis of a pheochromocytoma over standard tests for plasma catecholamines or urinary metanephrines.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is described for the measurement of ouabain in human plasma. This assay is specific for ouabain, strophanthidin, and ouabagenin, with other steroids, including digoxin and vasopressor hormones, exhibiting negligible cross-reactivity. We evaluated the variations of serum renin concentrations during hemodialysis in 17 patients (5 hypertensive and 12 normotensive). In addition we have studied the relationships between serum renin levels, right heart atrium diameters, arterial pressure, and body weight. At the end of the hemodialytic process we observed in both groups of patients an increase in the serum renin concentrations, as well as changes in the above parameters.

Since storage of fluoride in the skeleton has been blamed as an etiologic factor in the development of renal osteodystrophy, we studied the influence of hemodialysis on plasma fluoride levels in 17 patients with chronic renal failure on regular hemodialysis. The fluoride level in dialysate was found to be 19 micrograms/L, and 7.2 +/- 1.2 micrograms/L in healthy persons. Before hemodialysis, the mean fluoride level was 117.3 +/- 8.4 micrograms/L. Plasma cell tumours are a group of disorders which are characterized by neoplastic proliferation of atypical plasma cells involved in the production of monoclonal immunoglobulins. Bone pain, renal insufficiency and normocytic-normochromic anaemia are suggestive data for diagnosis. In 12-15% of cases of multiple myeloma, the first manifestation of the disease appears in the jaw bones and oral cavity. Two cases of multiple myeloma affecting the mandibular condyle are presented, and the incidence of oral and maxillofacial lesions is briefly reviewed.

Three new methods to characterize the function of protein C in plasma are described and compared to established procedures. Two methods make use of a snake venom derived specific protein C activator which allows rapid, sensitive and standardizable assays in plasma without sample pretreatment. The other technique is a two dimensional immunoelectrophoresis in the presence of calcium or EDTA, respectively.

A GLC method utilizing a flame-ionization detector is described for the analysis of meperidine in blood plasma. Meperidine is extracted with ether from plasma that has been made basic with sodium hydroxide. The ether extract is evaporated to dryness, and the residue is dissolved in carbon disulfide for GLC analysis. An internal standard, N',N'-diethylaminoacetyl-2,6-xylidine, is used to quantitate meperidine. The extraction efficiency from plasma is 85%, and as little as 0.05 microng of meperidine can be quantitatively determined in 1 ml of plasma.

A study has been made of plasma tocopherol concentrations in normal children and in children with intestinal abnormalities. A positive correlation between plasma tocopherol and age is shown between the ages of 4 months and 10 years. Most patients with cystic fibrosis or coeliac disease were found to have markedly reduced plasma tocopherol concentrations in comparison with the normal children of similar age.
