Histone deacetylases in neurodegeneration and neuronal plasticity.

This chapter pulls together current research on how HDAC shuttling between the nucleus and cytoplasm affects neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and epilepsy. It takes a close look at why these shifts in HDAC localization matter so much in brain disease and its implications for new treatments. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a big deal when it comes to gene regulation in the brain. They play key roles in both neurodegeneration and the brain's ability to adapt, working inside the nucleus and out in the cytoplasm. This chapter unpacks the molecular mechanisms

Immunometabolic Control of Neutrophil Plasticity in Tuberculosis.

The development of tuberculosis (TB) is dictated by a complicated interplay between antimicrobial defense and host-mediated immunopathology. Neutrophils are known to exhibit striking functional plasticity with phenotypes associated with both bacterial containment and tissue damage. However, the mechanisms that connect the granuloma microenvironment to neutrophil fate remain poorly understood. This review aims to fill this gap by integrating emerging evidence that defines immunometabolic adaptation as a key determinant of neutrophil plasticity in TB. The core of this analysis delineates how the

Potential plastic biodegradation in lakes worldwide.

Plastic pollution is ubiquitous, yet the biodegradation of plastic waste remains poorly understood due to limited knowledge of microbial plastic degradation potential. Here, we demonstrate that plastic waste shapes the global distribution of plastic-degrading potential across 182,661 lakes worldwide using integrated metagenomic and machine learning analyses and identify a tipping point (≥7.44 particles/m3) for effective in situ bioremediation. We constructed, for the first time, a catalog of candidate plastic-degrading bacteria, including 15,715 nonredundant enzyme homologs and 4,856 metagenom

Vitamin B12 in Cell Plasticity and Repair.

Cellular plasticity, which refers to the capacity of cells to alter their identity or potency in response to a variety of stimuli, is emerging as an essential component in tissue repair. Despite the fact that stem cells have historically been considered to be the major agents of plasticity, new research has demonstrated that even differentiated cells in organs including the stomach, pancreas, and lungs are capable of displaying plasticity under specific physiological conditions, such as during injury and repair. One element essential for many physiological processes is vitamin B12 (VB12). Beyo

Plastic Packaging Wrap for Patient Packaging.

Bandages have been used in hemorrhage control since at least ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times. The design remained unchanged until the fifth century BCE, when gauze was introduced. Modern bandages are relatively expensive and heavy and are not widely available in low-resource environments. Packaging wrap, sometimes called Saran wrap, cling film, cling wrap, or Glad wrap, is widely available in many countries. It is used commercially with handheld dispensers to bind goods to pallets for secure transport. In austere settings, packaging wrap has a large number of improvised medical uses.

Glycogen supports glycolytic plasticity in neurons.

Glycogen is the largest energy reserve in the brain, but the specific role of glycogen in supporting neuronal energy metabolism in vivo is not well understood. We established a system in Caenorhabditis elegans to dynamically probe glycolytic states in single cells of living animals via the use of the glycolytic sensor HYlight and determined that neurons can dynamically regulate glycolysis in response to activity or transient hypoxia. We performed an RNAi screen and identified that PYGL-1, an ortholog of the human glycogen phosphorylase, is required in neurons for glycolytic plasticity. We dete

Ocular Dominance Plasticity: A Mini-Review.

Ocular dominance plasticity, the ability of the brain to change sensory eye balance, has traditionally been believed to be extremely limited in adult visual cortex. However, recent studies on short-term monocular deprivation (MD) demonstrate that its presence is prevalent in adult humans, as short-term MD is capable of significantly shifting ocular dominance in favor of the previously deprived eye. Thus, findings over the last 15 years highlight that short-term MD can be a promising alternative treatment for amblyopia, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by binocular imbalance. Convent

Proteinuria and tubular cells: Plasticity and toxicity.

AIM: Proteinuria is the most robust predictive factors for the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and interventions targeting proteinuria reduction have shown to be the most effective nephroprotective treatments to date. While glomerular dysfunction is the primary source of proteinuria, its consequences extend beyond the glomerulus and have a profound impact on tubular epithelial cells. Indeed, proteinuria induces notable phenotypic changes in tubular epithelial cells and plays a crucial role in driving CKD progression. This comprehensive review aims to elucidate the mechanisms invol

Ergonomics in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Understanding effective ergonomic interventions is crucial for enhancing occupational health and career longevity. There is a paucity of clear ergonomics guidelines in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS), placing practitioners at high risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and their consequences. RECENT FINDINGS: There is mounting evidence that FPRS specialists are at increased risk of WMSDs as compared with the public and other surgical specialties. Numerous studies have demonstrated that implementation of ergonomics principles in surgery decre

Effects of glucocorticoids on adipose tissue plasticity.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) play an important role in metabolic adaptation, regulating carbohydrate-lipid homeostasis and the immune system. Because they also have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, synthetic analogues of GCs have been developed and are widely used in the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions and in organ transplantation. GCs are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world. However, long term and high GC doses can cause side effects such as GC-induced diabetes and lipodystrophy. In recent years, a large number of independent studies have reported th

Plastic strain localization in Bouligand structures.

The Bouligand structure represents helicoidal stacking of aligned fibers; such a structure is widely observed in biological composites. Despite the progress in characterization of toughening caused by Bouligand arrangement of fibers, the inelastic deformation mechanisms of this structure remain elusive. In this study, we carry out calculations for plastic deformation of Bouligand structure, crossed-lamellar structure and the single lamellar structure. It is found that the single lamellar structure and crossed-lamellar structure can undergo necking, while in the Bouligand structure, plastic str

Plastic Surgery and the Management of Surgical Infections.

Plastic surgeons bring wide anatomic competence and reconstructive surgical capacities to the management of surgical infections. Their anatomical expertise allows them to definitively explore and treat acute infections. Reconstructive options allow for the eradication of chronic infections with salvage of the infected body part. Hand infections illustrate the plastic surgeon's anatomic approach to acute infections. The management of distal tibial osteomyelitis illustrates how plastic surgeons can introduce techniques developed for other body regions in the treatment of a chronic infection.

Plastic bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae.

Plastic bronchitis is characterized by sputum obstructing the bronchus and causing atelectasis. Bronchoscopic removal of the clogged bronchial cast is typically performed, but small-diameter bronchoscopes with narrow suction ports cannot achieve adequate suction. Suction using a bronchoscope as a guide sheath may be effective for treating plastic bronchitis in children.

Structural Plasticity of the Hippocampus in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Neuroplasticity is the capacity of neural networks in the brain to alter through development and rearrangement. It can be classified as structural and functional plasticity. The hippocampus is more susceptible to neuroplasticity as compared to other brain regions. Structural modifications in the hippocampus underpin several neurodegenerative diseases that exhibit cognitive and emotional dysregulation. This article reviews the findings of several preclinical and clinical studies about the role of structural plasticity in the hippocampus in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disea

Plasticity, genetics and epigenetics in dystonia: An update.

Dystonia represents a group of movement disorders characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that result in abnormal posture and twisting movements. In the last 20 years several animal models have been generated, greatly improving our knowledge of the neural and molecular mechanism underlying this pathological condition, but the pathophysiology remains still poorly understood. In this review we will discuss recent genetic factors related to dystonia and the current understanding of synaptic plasticity alterations reported by both clinical and experimental research. We will also present r

Neurochemical plasticity of the carotid body in hypertension.

The carotid body (CB), a main peripheral arterial chemoreceptor, has lately been implicated in the pathophysiology of various cardiovascular disorders. Emerging experimental evidence supports a causal relationship between CB dysfunction and augmented sympathetic outflow which is the common hallmark of human sympathetic-related diseases, including essential hypertension. To gain insight into the neurotransmitter profile of chemosensory cells in the hypertensive CB, we examined the expression and cellular localization of some classical neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and gaseous signaling mole
