The Honeybee Gut Mycobiota Cluster by Season Versus the Microbiota Which Cluster by Gut Segment.

Honeybees represent one of the most important insect species we have, particularly due to their pollinating services. Several emerging fungal and bacterial diseases, however, are currently threatening honeybees without known mechanisms of pathogenicity. Therefore, the aim of the current work was to investigate the seasonal (winter, spring, summer, and autumn) fungal and bacterial distribution through different gut segments (crop, midgut, ileum, and rectum). This was done from two hives in Norway. Our main finding was that bacteria clustered by gut segments, while fungi were clustered by season

Water Quality Improvements and Hydrogeomorphic Change Over 20 Years Contributed to Macrophyte Community Recovery in the Upper Mississippi River.

Several large rivers across the globe have recently undergone noticeable improvements to water quality. Yet, the cascading ecological consequences for aquatic life, including macrophytes, are largely unknown, owing to the lack of suitable long-term data and the difficulty of modelling community-level responses. Our study leveraged multiple big datasets from 1998 to 2019 within a 400-km stretch of the Upper Mississippi River in the United States, which experienced major changes to hydrogeomorphology, water quality, and climate during the 22-year study. These decadal changes resulted from both n

Introgression of Septoria Leaf Spot Resistance from Wild Solanum Species into Cultivated Tomato via Ovule Rescue, Bridging Backcrosses, and Identification of Candidate Resistance Loci.

Septoria leaf spot (SLS), caused by Septoria lycopersici Speg., is an important and increasingly prevalent foliar disease of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) with no commercially resistant cultivars available. We screened 22 cultivated and wild accessions against a prevalent S. lycopersici isolate (WV21-1) and identified S. peruvianum LA2744 and S. corneliomulleri LA1910 as highly resistant (score 1 on a 1-to-5 scale), with S. arcanum LA1984 as resistant (score 2), whereas cultivated accessions scored 4 to 5. Using an optimized ovule rescue protocol with a 25-to-35-day rescue window after poll

Morphological and Ecological Traits Explain Variation in Desiccation Tolerance Among Bees.

Rising temperatures associated with global warming are often accompanied by shifts in precipitation patterns, increasing the risk of desiccation for insects. However, our understanding of how functional traits shape desiccation tolerance remains limited, particularly among pollinators. We assessed the desiccation tolerance of 22 bee species (13 genera, five families) from the Greek island of Lesbos, covering a range of body sizes, hairiness, nesting habitats, and social structures. We measured three desiccation tolerance metrics under standardized acute desiccating conditions (27°C and 0% RH):

Development of 1,2,4-oxadiazole-containing isoxazoline insecticides with improved honeybee compatibility.

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera frugiperda (S. frugiperda) and Plutella xylostella (P. xylostella) are major constraints to staple and cruciferous crops, respectively, and have evolved widespread resistance to anthranilic amide insecticides. Isoxazolines, acting as γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor modulators, are promising alternatives for controlling resistant populations. However, many members of this class exhibit high toxicity toward ecologically important pollinators. Here, we report a series of new isoxazoline analogues featuring a 1,2,4-oxadiazole motif designed by a ring-closure strategy to

Divergent Floral and Vegetative Trait Responses to Abiotic Factors Drive Phenotypic Diversity in Platanthera dilatata (Orchidaceae) Across Alaska.

Multiple traits make up an integrated phenotype, but traits may be shaped by differing drivers. It is often assumed that selection by biotic agents drives floral variation, but abiotic factors are also known to influence floral traits. Understanding trait covariations and their association with diverse environmental factors is a central question in evolution and ecology. Here, we studied covariation in floral and vegetative traits in relation to climate and topo-edaphic variation in the orchid Platanthera dilatata. In Platanthera, nectar spur length is associated with pollinator tongue length,

Comparative whole-genome and proteomics analyses of the next seed bank and the original master seed bank of MucoRice-CTB 51A line, a rice-based oral cholera vaccine.

BACKGROUND: We have previously developed a rice-based oral vaccine against cholera diarrhea, MucoRice-CTB. Using Agrobacterium-mediated co-transformation, we produced the selection marker-free MucoRice-CTB line 51A, which has three copies of the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) gene and two copies of an RNAi cassette inserted into the rice genome. We determined the sequence and location of the transgenes on rice chromosomes 3 and 12. The expression of alpha-amylase/trypsin inhibitor, a major allergen protein in rice, is lower in this line than in wild-type rice. Line 51A was self-pollinated for f

Host range of Triatoma virus does not extend to Aedes aegypti and Apis mellifera.

Vector control is the most effective method to prevent transmission of Chagas disease. Control is mostly made through chemical insecticides although they have negative impact on wild pollinators, such as bees. Reducing pesticide use through biological alternatives could minimize the damage to these beneficial insects. Triatoma virus (TrV) is a pathogen able to kill triatomines and thus a valid candidate to be used as biological control agent. In this study we evaluate the capacity of TrV to infect an important beneficial insect (Apis mellifera) as well as a plague insect (Aedes aegypti). Resul

Insecticide exposure alters feeding and impairs ovary development in a solitary bee.

Insecticide exposure is a growing concern due to its implication in population declines and disruption of key ecosystem services such as pollination. Bees and other beneficial insects can be exposed to insecticides multiple times throughout their lives and across generations, with impacts on behavior and reproduction. To investigate mechanisms underlying reduced reproduction in bees exposed to insecticide over time, I quantified the direct and carryover effects of insecticide exposure on the feeding and ovary development of the solitary bee, Osmia lignaria. Bees were exposed to the insecticide

Advances in Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms of Heat Stress in Apple and Pear.

Persistent global warming significantly impacts crop phenology and productivity, with perennial fruit trees facing heightened challenges due to their long life cycles and complex heat stress accumulation. Apple and pear, which hold substantial economic and nutritional value, are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures, manifesting as accelerated phenology, impaired floral organ development, disrupted pollination and fertilization, and insufficient fruit coloration-all of which severely compromise fruit quality and commercial value. Although recent advances have been made in elucidating he

Factors influencing inpatient palliative care chaplain clinical notes: a focus group study.

Inpatient palliative care chaplains document their care through writing clinical notes in the electronic health record. The evidence shows these notes need improvement. To help chaplains communicate better through their clinical notes, this study examined the barriers and facilitators associated with this practice. Four online focus groups with 30 U.S. palliative chaplains were moderated, January-March, 2025. With a reflexive thematic analysis approach, eight themes were generated: 1) What do they need to know?, 2) Rhythm to note writing for a team, 3) We're all islands unto ourselves, 4) What

OsNCED5 Controls Abscisic Acid-Mediated Anther Dehiscence and Male Fertility in Rice.

Proper anther dehiscence is essential for successful pollination and male fertility in flowering plants. However, many gaps remain in the regulatory mechanisms underlying anther dehiscence in plants, including a possible role for abscisic acid (ABA) in anther dehiscence. Here, we reported a member of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase family (NCED), OsNCED5, which regulates proper anther dehiscence for male fertility in rice. OsNCED5 encodes a chloroplast-localized ABA biosynthetic enzyme highly expressed in anther during the late phase. Disruption of OsNCED5 by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis

Developmental and caste-specific expression patterns of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters in honey bees (Apis mellifera).

While honey bees play a vital role in global crop production, they face increasing exposure to xenobiotic chemicals during commercial pollination. Multidrug-resistance (MDR)-type ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters provide the first line of defense against xenobiotic chemicals. This study investigated the gene expression profiles of 12 ABC transporters involved in chemical detoxification across three honey bee castes and 13 life stages using quantitative real-time PCR. Six ABC genes showed increased expression during worker bee development and were identified as MDR-like transporters (Ame-

Discrimination and Characterization of Volatile Flavor Compounds in Fresh Oriental Melon after Forchlorfenuron Application Using Electronic Nose (E-Nose) and Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS).

Aroma is a crucial factor determining the market value and consumer satisfaction of fresh oriental melon. However, few studies focus on the volatile flavor of fresh oriental melon, and the effect of forchlorfenuron application on the aroma profile is unclear. This study characterized the volatile profile of fresh oriental melon fruit after forchlorfenuron application by E-nose and HS-GC-IMS. The holistic variation of volatile compounds exhibited evident distinction based on linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with E-nose. Forty-eight volatile compounds were identified from fresh oriental melon

Ecology of bats and their role in emerging zoonotic diseases: a review.

The order Chiroptera is the second largest order of mammals and shows great physiological and ecological diversity. These animals play significant ecological roles as prey and predator as well as facilitating pollination, seed dispersal, arthropod reduction and nutrient distribution and reutilisation in nature. Bats act as hosts to a range of viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic zoonoses. Human activities increase the likelihood of exposure to bats, thereby increasing the opportunity for infections to spill over. Continuing ecological processes, emergence and spillover of novel pathogens in

Thyroid Diagnosis from SPECT Images Using Convolutional Neural Network with Optimization.

Thyroid disease has now become the second largest disease in the endocrine field; SPECT imaging is particularly important for the clinical diagnosis of thyroid diseases. However, there is little research on the application of SPECT images in the computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid diseases based on machine learning methods. A convolutional neural network with optimization-based computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid diseases using SPECT images is developed. Three categories of diseases are considered, and they are Graves' disease, Hashimoto disease, and subacute thyroiditis. A modified DenseNet a

Preliminary study on biomarkers for the fungal resistance in Vitis vinifera leaves.

We examined the leaf chemical composition of six seedlings obtained by self-pollination of the Bulgarian wine-making variety Storgozia as well as the cultivar Bouquet, which is the susceptible parent of Storgozia. The chemical composition was investigated in the framework of a program for identification of metabolites associated with disease resistance in grape-vine. Acetone, dichloromethane and butanol extracts, as well as volatiles obtained from fresh material were analyzed by GC/MS. Based on the correlations of the GC/MS data and estimated resistance of the leaves towards the etiological ag

Occupational rhinoconjunctivitis and bronchial asthma due to Phoenix canariensis pollen allergy.

We report a case of occupational bronchial asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis caused by Phoenix canariensis (PC) pollen. The canary palm is a type of palm tree, belonging to the Arecaceae family, which is widely distributed in frost-free regions as an ornamental tree. Our patient was referred because he suffered symptoms of bronchial asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, and contact urticaria when pruning dried leaves from PC during the pollination months. The skin prick test (SPT) with a PC pollen extract was positive, as was the specific IgE to PC pollen determined by Phadezym RAST, indicating an IgE-med

Mechanical buckling can pattern the light-diffracting cuticle of Hibiscus trionum.

Many species have cuticular striations that play a range of roles, from pollinator attraction to surface wettability. In Hibiscus trionum, the striations span multiple cells at the base of the petal to form a pattern that produces a type of iridescence. It is postulated, using theoretical models, that the pattern of striations could result from mechanical instabilities. By combining the application of mechanical stress with high-resolution imaging, we demonstrate that the cuticle buckles to create a striated pattern. Through mechanical modeling and cryo-SEM fractures, we show that the cuticle

Reproductive thermotolerance: from flower development to seed initiation.

Global warming has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events, threatening crop productivity and food security. Plant reproductive development is particularly vulnerable to high temperature, and even brief heat episodes can markedly reduce seed set. Heat stress disrupts multiple reproductive stages, including flowering, male and female gametophyte development, pollination, fertilization, and early seed development. Thus, reproductive thermotolerance requires coordinated regulation across developmental stages and tissue systems. In this review, we synthesize current knowledge
