Knee-flexion deformity in arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is treated by serial casting into extension, distal femoral osteotomies, distal femoral-guided growth, hemiepiphysiodesis, external fixation, capsulotomy, and soft-tissue releases. We are aware of four cases treated by distal anterior femoral-guided growth with tension band plates in which an unreported complication occurred: the screws of the tension band plates penetrated the posterior cortex of the femur during remodeling with metaphyseal funnelization risking the neurovascular bundle. Inclusion criteria were cases with arthrogryp

The triple procedure, which includes penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), and posterior chamber lens implantation (PCIOL), is a surgical preference and a powerful remedy for patients with corneal pathologies and cataracts. In the patient, the PCIOL is implanted into the capsular bag, and the usage of a closed anterior chamber technique is recommended. 10-zero nylon sutures are used in the ten to twelve o'clock positions, and the donor corneal button is added. Continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) is accomplished with a capsulotomy inserted through the

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common cause of deterioration of vision and contrast sensitivity and glare after cataract surgery. Neodymium (Nd): yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser capsulotomy is an effective and standard procedure to treat these symptoms. The incidence rate of PCO requiring Nd:YAG laser treatment varies and depends on published studies, ranging from 2.2% to 10.0%. Although Nd:YAG laser treatment is largely safe, it still has complications, such as transient increase of intraocular pressure, anterior uveitis, intraocular lenses pitting, cystoid macula edema

Removal of the crystalline lens increases the risk of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) by creating changes in the ocular environment that predispose to development of retinal breaks. The evolution of cataract surgery from intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE) to extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and phacoemulsification has reduced the incidence of RD, while advances in vitreoretinal surgery have resulted in improved outcomes when retinal detachment does occur. The incidence of RD varies between 0.4-3.6% for ICCE and between 0.55-1.65% for ECCE. In eyes having undergone phacoemu

The periacetabular osteotomy is a strategy for the treatment of residual hip dysplasia in young adults with the aim of preventing secondary coxarthrosis. This polygonal, juxta-articular osteotomy respects the vascular blood supply to the acetabular fragment and thus facilitates an extensive acetabular reorientation with improvement of the insufficient coverage of the femoral head, including medial displacement of the fragment. All osteotomies are performed by one approach, the modified Smith-Petersen, which allows an anterior capsulotomy. Inspection of the joint not only provides information o

This study aimed to report the efficacy and outcome safety of capsular tension segment (CTS) combined with capsular tension ring (CTR) in ectopia lentis in children. This retrospective case series included patients with nontraumatic ectopia lentis under 18 years old who underwent intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with CTS and CTR combined between 2022 and 2023. The primary outcomes were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), IOL centration, and postoperative complications. Four patients, aged 6, 9, 10, and 13, had bilateral subluxated lenses and underwent the surgery. Ectopia lentis with a sus

We conducted a prospective randomized clinical trial on the use of 2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and 1% sodium hyaluronate in the anterior chamber during anterior capsulotomy and nuclear expression in extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation in 70 patients. Both viscoelastic substances helped maintain the anterior chamber and facilitated the operation, although sodium hyaluronate was preferred. There was no excessive intraocular inflammation or toxicity noted with either agent. Patients given sodium hyaluronate had a larger increase in intraocular pressure

BACKGROUND: Primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation after cataract aspiration is a widely accepted means of correcting pediatric aphakia. However, little is available in the literature on secondary IOL implantation in children. We present our experience over the past 6 years.
METHODS: The charts of 57 aphakic children (61 eyes) who underwent secondary posterior chamber IOL implantation between January 1989 and April 1996 were reviewed. In general, these children were either intolerant of or noncompliant with their contact lenses. An attempt was made to correlate visual outcome with patien

Our study presents the results with a silicone disc-lens (Adatomed 90D) over a postoperative period of 18 months. It includes 47 patients, 42 could be reexamined. The implantation was done after continuous circular capsulorhexis and phacoemulsification with a Faulkner-folder directly into the capsular bag. The implantation was sometimes difficult. Skill and experience of the surgeon are required. The IOL springs forth of the implantation forceps, which can lead to traumatization of the capsule and the iris. Three times the posterior capsule ruptured, in two cases the implantation was stopped b

BACKGROUND: Negative dysphotopsias (ND) are visual aberrations associated with in-the-bag optic intraocular lens (IOL) placement, causing arc-shaped or linear shadows. Reverse optic capture (ROC) is employed to prevent ND, yet it poses the risk of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) which usually develops within 2-5 years post-surgery due to the lens epithelial cells (LECs) proliferation and migration onto the posterior capsule. This can lead to a cloudy or hazy appearance in the visual field. Early identification of posterior capsular opacities is crucial to ensure timely intervention and
