False diagnosis of intestinal obstruction in a fetus with congenital chloride diarrhea.

Intestinal obstruction is often diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound, providing an opportunity for prenatal counseling, genetic investigation, … oride levels were diagnostic of congenital chloride diarrhea. She was placed on sodium chloride and potassium chloride supplements, and her serum electrolytes normalized. Congenital chloride diarrhea is a rare, inherited condition caused by an abnormality of intestinal electrolyte transport. This case illustrates that it may present prenatally with a picture similar …

STIMULATION OF B3-RECEPTOR-INDUCED CENTRAL NEUROGENIC EDEMA AND VITIATED ELECTROLYTE HOMEOSTASIS IN EXPERIMENTAL RODENT MODEL.

Mirabegron is one of the recently introduced treatments for overactive bladder which avoids the undue effects of antimuscarinics such as constipation, headache, and dry mouth. This study investigated chronic relatively high doses of beta3 adrenergic receptor activation effect on electrolyte hemostasis and possible consequence on the central nervous system viability. In the present study, serum sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium ion levels using flame photometry had been measured and eosin and hematoxylin staining for cerebral vasculature in the brain striatum. Results showed that chronic

Cellular expression of the K+-Cl- cotransporter KCC3 in the central nervous system of mouse.

Potassium/Chloride cotransporters are transmembrane proteins that regulate cell volume and control neuronal activity by transporting K(+) and Cl(-) ions across the plasma membrane. Potassium/Chloride cotransporter 3 (KCC3) mutations are responsible for hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy with agenesis of the corpus callosum (HMSN/ACC), which is a severe sensory and motor neuropathy. Two major splice variants, KCC3a and KCC3b, were shown to be expressed in adult mouse tissues. Although KCC3a is mainly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), its specific cellular expression patterns h

Effect of alloxan diabetes on exocrine pancreatic secretion in the anesthetized rabbit.

The influence of the endocrine pancreas on the exocrine pancreatic secretion of both electrolytes and enzymes was studied in rabbits made diabetic by alloxan administration. No alterations were observed in the flow of pancreatic juice. Bicarbonate concentrations were considerably increased, whereas chloride concentrations were clearly reduced in the alloxan-diabetic rabbits compared with the control animals. Insulin treatment restored anion levels to normal. Similar, although less pronounced changes were seen in the output values of bicarbonate and chloride. There were no significant differenc

Lethal injection for execution: chemical asphyxiation?

BACKGROUND: Lethal injection for execution was conceived as a comparatively humane alternative to electrocution or cyanide gas. The current protocols are based on one improvised by a medical examiner and an anesthesiologist in Oklahoma and are practiced on an ad hoc basis at the discretion of prison personnel. Each drug used, the ultrashort-acting barbiturate thiopental, the neuromuscular blocker pancuronium bromide, and the electrolyte potassium chloride, was expected to be lethal alone, while the combination was intended to produce anesthesia then death due to respiratory and cardiac arrest.…

Differential effects of acetylcholine, nitric oxide and levcromakalim on smooth muscle membrane potential and tone in the rabbit basilar artery.

1. Endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells in isolated, pre-contracted segments of rabbit basilar artery in response to acetylcholine (100 microM) was abolished in the presence of glibenclamide (10 microM). 2. Acetylcholine-evoked relaxation was unaffected by either glibenclamide or 65 mM potassium chloride, indicating that the change in membrane potential did not form an essential component of relaxation and that high concentrations of potassium did not inhibit the release or action of endothelium-derived relaxing factor in this vessel. 3. Saturated solutions of nitric …

Renal response to potassium infusion in rats given lithium for prolonged time.

The effects of infusion of potassium chloride was studied in Wistar rats given lithium by the food for more than 3 weeks. The animals were anaesthetized with amytal and three clearance periods were run. During periods 1 and 3 0.15 M NcCl was infused at a rate of 0.02 ml/min. for 60 min. and in period 2 0.5 M KCl was infused at the same rate for 90 min. Potassium infusion led to an increase of potassium excretion. Sodium excretion and urine flow were positive linear correlated to the potassium excretion but in rats given lithium the effect of potassium on sodium excretion was about eight times …

Comparing a range of potassium-enriched low sodium salt substitutes to common salt: Results of taste and visual tests in South African adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Potassium-enriched low sodium salt substitutes (LSSS), which replace a proportion of sodium chloride (NaCl) with potassium chloride (KCl), have been shown to reduce blood pressure and offer a potential solution to address the high burden of hypertension in South Africa. However, it is unknown which proportions of KCl in LSSS are acceptable. We compared the taste and visual acceptability of various LSSS in South African adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-six adults underwent double-blind taste and visual tests of four LSSS (35%KCl/65%NaCl; 50%KCl/50%NaCl; 66%KCl/34%NaCl; 1…

The role of chloride transport in the thick ascending limb in the pathogenesis of Bartter's syndrome.

Fractional chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, measured by clearance techniques, is subnormal in patients with Bartter's syndrome. This defect is a marker for the syndrome and, presumably, is the cause of the supranormal tubular secretion of potassium that characterizes the disorder. The potassium depletion that results from excessive potassium excretion is probably the stimulus for the increased synthesis of prostacyclin by blood vessels and prostaglandin E2 by kidneys that occurs in Bartter's syndrome. The overproduction of prostaglandins mediates hyperren

K-CL co-transport plays an important role in normal and beta thalassemic erythropoiesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cell volume changes are hallmarks of both cell maturation and apoptosis, and are paralleled by modulation of membrane ion transport pathways. We evaluated the possible role of K-Cl co-transport (KCC) in both normal and beta-thalassemic erythropoiesis in vitro. DESIGN AND METHODS: We studied the effects of the KCC inhibitor, DIOA, on cell proliferation and differentiation, on expression of KCC mRNA and polypeptides, and on expression of cell cycle and apoptosis genes in in vitro liquid-cultures of CD34(+) cells from normal and beta-thalassemic subjects. RESULTS: bet

The kidney distal tubule potassium switch, modern diet and hypertension.

Hypertension is the leading contributor to premature death and disability in the world. Genetic susceptibility and high dietary salt (NaCl) consumption have long been considered to be the primary culprits but growing evidence indicates that low dietary potassium consumption has an equally important role. Although the underlying mechanisms are complex and multifactorial, the potassium switch signalling mechanism in the kidney distal convoluted tubule represents a crucial pathway with implications for preventing and treating hypertension. Comprising a Kir4.1 and Kir5.1 channel potassium-sensing

Hypochloremic alkalosis in infants associated with soy protein formula.

Thirteen infants, 2 to 10 months of age, developed hypochloremic alkalosis (serum chloride 59 to 92 mEq/l) while taking Neo-Mull-Soy (Syntex), a soy-based formula low in chloride (measured to be 0 to 2 mEq/l) but with considerable potassium citrate. Range of symptoms included lethargy, anorexia, mild spitting up, diarrhea, hematuria, and growth failure. Urine chloride excretion was less than 3 mEq/l. Plasma renin activity or aldosterone, measured in six infants, was elevated. All responded promptly to supplemental salt. One infant receiving Neo-Mull-Soy redeveloped alkalosis when supplemental

Potassium and ammonium recovery in treated urine by zeolite based mixed matrix membranes.

Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are essential for crop growth, which are abundant in urine. Although numerous studies have developed techniques to recover ammonium and phosphorus from urine, limited research made efforts on the recovery of potassium, which is a non-renewable resource with uneven global distribution. In this study, we explored the possibility of zeolite based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to selectively recover ammonium and potassium from urine, with minimal detention of sodium. The findings demonstrated that upon the pre-treatment of zeolites with sodium chloride solution,

Ionic requirements in histamine-evoked potassium efflux in guinea pig pancreas.

Guinea pig pancreatic segments were superfused during 10 min with physiological saline solutions containing 10(-6) M acetylcholine (ACh) or histamine (10(-3)-10(-6) M) and the potassium concentration in the effluent [K+]o) was measured by flame photometry. Histamine evoked a transient increase in [K/]o. The removal of calcium from the superfusing solution and addition of 10(-4) M EGTA caused a significant reduction in the histamine-evoked potassium outflow. Replacement of chloride (Cl-) in the physiological salt solution by nitrate (NO3-) caused a significant reduction in the histamine-evoked

[Bartter syndrome: a new therapeutic approach].

The Bartter syndrome is a rare hereditary salt-wasting tubulopathy, characterized by metabolic alkalosis, hypokalemia, hyperreninemia and hyperaldosteronemia of varying severity. Indomethacin and high doses of oral potassium have been until now the therapeutic strategies used, with high risk of gastrointestinal injury. Since April 2009, aliskiren--renin inhibitor--has been used in individual cases of Bartter syndrome in adults, by ignoring its use in pediatrics. The authors present the case of an eight year old child with Bartter syndrome, treated with oral potassium chloride and oral indometh…

Gold sensitivity blast transformation.

A 36-year-old female patient developed eczema from wearing gold jewelry. Epicutaneous skin tests were performed with gold leaf, potassium dicyanoaurate, gold sodium thiosulphate, gold chloride, sodium chloroaurate and potassium bromoaurate. The test was positive with gold sodium thiosulphate only. Blast transformation was induced with all the gold salts except sodium chloroaurate, and the positive responses seemed to be dose-dependent. In vitro gold salt-induced reactions are useful in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis.
