Chemical and gamma-irradiation sterilisation were examined in this study for implantable needle electrodes. INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis is a mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix spp., and the primary mode of transmission is traumatic inoculation of fungus conidia from plants and other organic matter.
METHODS: Sporotrichosis was established in a cat and in three members of one family from a rural area, by fungal growth in culture.
RESULTS: The cutaneous lesions developed on the lower buttock and limbs with no report of any injury.

A case of laboratory-acquired sporotrichosis is described that was associated with research activities involving isolates of Sporothrix schenckii from the 1988 sporotrichosis epidemic in the USA. Infection occurred in the absence of apparent trauma or other predisposing factors. The possibility that S. schenckii can invade healthy and intact skin is suggested.

Sporotrichosis was diagnosed in five cats. Seven humans exposed to these cats subsequently developed the disease. All feline cases developed draining ulcers, and in four of five cases there was disseminated cutaneous involvement. Histologically, numerous Sporothrix organisms were noted in cutaneous lesions and overlying exudate. The seven humans who became infected were involved in cleaning and medicating cats with the disease; all human patients developed a localized lymphocutaneous form of sporotrichosis. Two cases of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis are reported from Sudan in a boy aged four and a half years and a girl aged 16 years respectively. Diagnosis was based mainly on the clinical findings and the dramatic response to treatment with oral potassium iodine, as well as the histological finding of yeasts compatible with the yeast phase Sporothrix schenkii.

Dogs with precursor-targeted immune-mediated anemia (PIMA) are commonly treated with immunosuppressive therapy, but information on predictors of treatment response and response time is limited. BACKGROUND: Precursor-targeted immune-mediated anemia (PIMA) has been described in dogs presenting with nonregenerative anemia and evidence of ineffective erythropoiesis. Although it has been suggested that its occurrence may be related to the immune targeting of erythroid precursors, this pathogenesis has not been established. PIMA is mainly treated with glucocorticoids, and in cases where glucocorticoids alone are not effective, immunosuppressants are also used as combination therapy. A 72-year-old man presented with persistent oligoarthritis and positive results for rheumatoid factor and was suspected of having rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) findings were not consistent with those of typical RA. He had undergone surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, which allowed both histopathological and microbiological examinations to be performed. A synovial tissue culture was positive for Sporothrix schenckii, and he was diagnosed with sporotrichal tenosynovitis. He received anti-fungal therapy, and the sporotrichal tenosynovitis resolved.

Potassium iodide (KI) has been shown to impair thyroid protein biosynthesis both in vivo and in vitro. The present study was performed in order to clarify its mechanism of action. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis was studied in beef thyroid slices with either [32P] or [3H]-uridine as labelled precursors.
