Help-seeking behaviour in primary care of men and women with a history of abuse: A Dutch cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show an association between a history of abuse and higher care demand. However, studies in general practice regarding help-seeking behaviour by patients (mainly male patients) with a history of abuse are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To analyse help-seeking behaviour in general practice of men and women with a history of abuse. METHODS: A cohort study using data from a Dutch primary care registration network from 2015 to 2019. We included all patients aged ≥ 18 years who indicated on a questionnaire that they did or did not have a history of abuse. We analysed differences

Burnout of intrinsically motivated GPs when exposed to external regulation: A combined panel data survey and cluster randomized field experiment.

Burnout among general practitioners (GPs) is a problem in many countries. Research indicates that burnout is less likely to occur among intrinsically motivated employees. Based on self-determination theory, we investigate 1) whether intrinsically motivated GPs are less burned out than their colleagues, and 2) whether the most intrinsically motivated GPs are more likely to burn out when exposed to an external regulatory accreditation programme. General practices in Denmark were cluster randomized to mandatory accreditation in 2016, 2017 or 2018. We measure GPs' intrinsic motivation and burnout

[Psycho-oncology and the present tasks of psycho-oncologists].

This article aims to contribute to a better apprehension by oncologists of the work done by psycho-oncologists, by diminishing misconceptions and misunderstandings end promoting collaboration between them. First, we describe the main aspects of their practice, which is still too poorly apprehended, the landmarks they use (when they support a patient they take into account his/her body, social and professional position, personal and family history, objectives, psychopathology and the family), and the tools they have at their disposal. We then describe how psycho-oncology is currently organised,

[Information-related changes in attitude to mucocutaneous leishmaniasis of a population from an endemic region of the south of Bahia].

The mutilant nature of the mucosal form of leishmaniasis can cause alterations in personal relations. To identify the level of understanding of leishmaniasis and the psychological reaction to it patients and houseowners in an endemic area of Bahia were interviewed. Several false beliefs were identified and there was a strong tendency to reject mutilated patients among the population for a false fear of contagion. Possibly future clarification of the real nature of leishmaniasis could change such a negative attitude among the resident population.

What are we really measuring? The semantic confound in psychological scales and the case for theory-driven measurement.

The replication crisis in psychology is now widely recognized as a crisis of measurement itself, not merely of questionable research practices. Recent critical work has revealed that many psychological scales may be measuring semantic associations rather than the psychological phenomena they purport to assess. This Hypothesis and Theory article makes three contributions. First, it synthesizes diverse lines of critique-including Uher's distinction between statistical modeling and measurement, and the finding that computational language models, trained solely on word co-occurrence patterns, can

A systematic review of psychological interventions in total hip and knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The current practice in elective orthopaedics does not routinely include psychological interventions despite evidence that psychological factors such as personality, anxiety, depression and negative thinking styles can influence outcomes and recovery from surgery. The objective of this paper was to review the effectiveness of psychological interventions used in conjunction with total hip (THA) and knee arthroplasty (TKA), in improving patient reported joint outcomes. METHODS: An extensive literature search was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews

Mediating Model of College Students' Chinese Zhongyong Culture Thinking Mode and Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: College is a key period for students' learning and development, as they begin independently to face life's adversities. The essence of China's zhongyong culture is to provide a practical way of thinking, a basic principle of the Chinese people. However, empirical research on psychopathology is lacking. The present study investigated Chinese college students to explore and explain the psychological mechanism of depressive symptoms via the zhongyong practical thinking mode. METHODS: The study examined the relationship between zhongyong practical thinking and depressive symptoms, cop

The role of gambling type on gambling motives, cognitive distortions, and gambling severity in gamblers recruited online.

The recent literature shows that the type of gambling practiced influences problem gambling. This study was aimed at investigating the factors associated with gambling type, including gambling severity, gambling motives, and cognitive distortions. A total of 291 regular male gamblers (229 skill gamblers and 62 mixed gamblers, i.e., those who play at least one game of chance and one skill game) were recruited online and assessed for gambling severity (South Oaks Gambling Screen), gambling motives (Gambling Motives Questionnaire-Financial), cognitive distortions (Gambling-Related Cognition Scale

Exposure to air pollution and self-reported effects on Chinese students: A case study of 13 megacities.

Air pollution causes severe physical and psychological health complications. Considering China's continuously-deteriorating air quality, this study aimed to assess the self-reported effects of air pollution on the behavior and physical health of the students of 13 densely populated cities, and their awareness, practices, and perception of air pollution and its associated public health risks. A detailed, closed-ended questionnaire was administered to 2100 students from 54 universities and schools across China. The questionnaire, which had 24 questions, was categorized into four sections. Libertarianism and circumcision.

Despite the millenniums-old tradition in Abrahamic circles of removing the foreskin of a penis at birth, the involuntary and aggressive practice of circumcision must not be made an exception to the natural, negative right to self-ownership-a birthright which should prevent a parent from physically harming a child from the moment of birth going forward. This paper will present a natural rights argument against the practice of male child circumcision, while also looking into some of the potential physical and psychological consequences of the practice. It will compare the practice with that of f

Continuity and change: Violations of private patriarchal practices and domestic violence against rural wives in China.

We investigated how violations of private patriarchal practices affect physical, psychological, and sexual violence against rural wives. The sample was drawn from nationally representative data from the third wave survey on the Social Status of Women in China. We found that (1) women making a similar income or more than their husbands were more likely to experience psychological and physical violence, respectively; (2) the wife's migration experience increased her risk of psychological and sexual violence; (3) husband doing more housework decreased the odds of psychological violence, and equal

Network analysis of anxiety, depression, self-affirmation, and sleep disturbances in general hospital patients: a cross-sectional study.

Sleep disorders are prevalent among general hospital patients, significantly impairing quality of life and exacerbating existing medical conditions, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased costs. Current treatments primarily rely on pharmacological and psychological interventions, often neglecting the complex interactions between sleep disorders and emotional disturbances such as anxiety and depression, as well as psychological traits like self-affirmation. This study aims to address this gap by systematically exploring the multidimensional factors influencing sleep disorders and elu
