Application of Botulinum toxin type A: an arsenal in dentistry.

An extremely effective way of preventing damage to and enhancing treatment of dental hard tissues and restorations would be to ''de-programme'' the muscles responsible for excessive destructive forces and other gnathological-related diseases. The new paradigm is the intramuscular injection of Botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX) into the affected muscles. It is a natural protein produced by anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. The toxin inhibits the release of acetylcholine (ACH), a neurotransmitter responsible for the activation of muscle contraction and glandular secretion, and its administ

Clinical management of the dental patient taking multiple drugs.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) occur often in elders often due to polypharmacy. Those over 65 currently comprise 13% of the population but consume approximately a third of all drugs prescribed. Increased care when prescribing certain drug classes and careful monitoring of the patient can prevent many ADRs. This article examines four questions that should be addressed when providing dental care for an older patient taking multiple medications. These include: (1) what are the medical conditions that necessitate the medications, (2) what impact do these medical conditions have on the provision of

Preventive and clinical care provided to adolescents attending public oral health services New South Wales, Australia: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Dental Therapists and Oral Health Therapists (Therapists) working in the New South Wales (NSW) Public Oral Health Service are charged with providing clinical dental treatment including preventive care for all children under 18 years of age. Adolescents in particular are at risk of dental caries and periodontal disease which may be controlled through health education and clinical preventive interventions. However, there is a dearth of evidence about the type or the proportion of clinical time allocated to preventive care. The aim of this study is to record the proportion and type of

Prevalence of oral streptococci and glucosyltransferase genes in mother-child pairs: a cross-sectional study in Turkish families.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Dental caries is a multifactorial biofilm-related disease in which mutans and non-mutans Streptococcus species harboring glucosyltransferase (gtf) genes play significant roles. This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to investigate the prevalence, bacterial load, and molecular distribution of Streptococcus species and gtf genes among Turkish mother-child pairs. METHODS: A total of 72 mother-child pairs (144 saliva samples) were analyzed by culture, quantitative CFU counting, PCR, and RFLP. Microbial load was expressed as colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL), and c

[Efficacy of taurine haloamines and chlorhexidine against selected oral microbiome species].

INTRODUCTION: Uncontrolled bacteria of dental plaque generate formation of oral biofilm located on teeth and subgingival surfaces. It may induce local inflammation (gingivitis) with further development of periodontal diseases. A variety of oral bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Porhyromonas gingivalis are involved in pathogenesis of dental carries and periodontitis. Very often bacterial infections are associated with candidiasis (Candida albicans). Chlorhexidine (CHX) is the most commonly used antiseptic in dentistry due to its strong antibacterial activity and capacity to reduce the a

Oral Implants: The Paradigm Shift in Restorative Dentistry.

The discovery of the phenomenon "osseointegration," or functional ankylosis, has led to the development of oral implants with high clinical performance. Consequently, the placement of titanium implants has changed the paradigms of restorative dentistry. Implants are used to prevent placing reconstructions anchored on natural teeth when these are vital and intact. Furthermore, implants are suitable to improve subjective chewing function and to replace missing and strategically important abutments. The osseointegration process is characterized by a predictable sequence of healing events that enc

Aviation dentistry: current concepts and practice.

BACKGROUND: With the growing number of air passengers, flight attendants, leisure pilots as well as military and airline pilots, dentists may increasingly encounter flight-related oral conditions requiring treatment. Moreover, dentists should prevent the creation of in-flight hazards when treating aircrew members. The aim of this article is to introduce the concepts of aviation (aerospace) medicine and dentistry. METHODS: Data were gathered to cover the following issues: head and facial barotraumas (barotrauma-related headache, external otitic barotrauma, barosinusitis and barotitis-media), d

Oral complications of cancer therapies. Chronic dental complications.

Radiation therapy (RT) and chemotherapy have increased long-term survival with certain cancers. The use of dental investigation and treatment of chronic or delayed oral complications is developing. Altered dental root development, enamel opacities, hypocalcifications, periodontal problems, and a higher caries rate are seen in children treated with chemotherapy. The psychosocial implications of long-term survival on routine dental care are important. Prevention and treatment of long-term oral complications of radiation therapy are changing. Osteoradionecrosis remains complicated and devastating

Eating disorders: screening in the dental office.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are serious illnesses that often are not detected by health care professionals. The author presents techniques that the oral health care professional (OHCP) can use to screen at-risk patients for eating disorders during routine preventive care appointments. CONCLUSIONS: OHCPs often are the first health care professionals to encounter patients with undiagnosed eating disorders. Because early detection of eating disorders is challenging, screening tools can be helpful. Early detection of eating disorders, with appropriate referral, is associated with fewer dental an

Biofilm Management Technology: Air Polishing a Safe, Effective Modality.

Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms that adhere to each other. They thrive and proliferate in all kinds of natural aqueous environments. Dentistry regards biofilms as an etiological factor for a range of oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal disease, and implant-associated infections.1 This assertion is because the oral cavity and polymicrobial biofilm are home to numerous microbial species, including healthy microorganisms and those with pathogenic potential. Due to their stickiness and ability to multiply on surfaces, biofilms are highly resistant to both the hos

Child abuse: concerns for oral health practitioners.

Child abuse and neglect are prevalent issues that permeate all ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic segments of society. Parents of abused children frequently change physicians in order to prevent detection, but they are more likely to continue to visit the child's dentist. Most states recognize four major types of maltreatment: neglect; physical abuse; psychological maltreatment; and sexual abuse. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry defines dental neglect as "the willful failure of parent or guardian to seek and follow through with treatment necessary to ensure a level of oral health es
