Lumbar puncture was performed in 18 patients with latent syphilis to rule out asymptomatic neurosyphilis. In seven patients the CSF findings were abnormal. The parameters used in CSF were cell count, total protein, immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM), IgG index, and serologic tests for syphilis (VDRL, Kolmer, RPCF and FTA-ABS, including monospecific IgG and IgM conjugates). In order to shorten the expansion time and reduce complications in tissue expansion, we developed a new method using local delivery of drug during tissue expansion. The procedure commenced with placing an implant syringe between the skin and the expander. While the skin was expanded, the drugs such as prednisolone and procaine were injected under the skin from the implant syringe. Ten local anaesthetics were tested for their detection by gas chromatography (GC)-surface ionization detection (SID). Lidocaine, mepivacaine and bupivacaine were detected with the highest sensitivity; their detection limit was 5-10 pg in an injected volume. The contents of impurities, adulterants and diluents in 77 samples of illicit heroin were determined by a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. The origin of each sample was characterized by calculating the content of the opium alkaloids in relation to the heroin content. An approach is presented which allows the description of drug binding to lipid bilayers, when the drug is present in both charged and uncharged forms. Binding is described by Langmuir adsorption isotherms, with the maximum number of binding sites being 1/60 A2. An estimate of the change in drug pK on binding is necessary, and is close to zero for most drugs binding to dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, although delta pK = 1.0 for procaine. An experimental rabbit pyarthrosis model was utilized to investigate the effects of sodium salicylate therapy on cartilage destruction. Animals were innoculated with 10(3) organisms of Staphylococcus aureus 502A. The opposite knee was injected with sterile saline. Infection was documented 48 hours post innoculation, procaine penicillin therapy initiated, and the adequacy of therapy evaluated at sacrifice. The antibacterial activity of four local anaesthetics (LAs), amethocaine and procaine (esters), and cinchocain and lignocaine (amides), has been studied. All four LAs inhibited cell growth but only amethocaine and cinchocain had significant effects on cell viability and on the leakage of cellular constituents. Effects on growth inhibition were reversible. Concentrations causing marked loss in viability also caused the leakage of cellular constituents. The high endemicity of PPNG in some regions preclude the continued routine use of procaine penicillin as treatment for gonorrhoea.
