Kielė, D and Solianik, R. Four-week application of kinesiotaping improves proprioception, strength, and balance in individuals with complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture. J Strength Cond Res 37(1): 213-219, 2023-Kinesiotaping (KT) is common in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, but whether it is efficacious for surgically untreated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures is unknown. Therefore, we evaluated whether a strategy of physiotherapy plus KT would be superior to a strategy of physiotherapy alone on subsequent proprioception and motor function. Men aged 28.1 ± 6.7 years with comple…

Altered postural timing and abnormally low use of proprioception in lumbar spinal stenosis pre- and post- surgical decompression.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is frequently associated with postural instability. Although several studies evaluated patients' fu … , patients' postural timing approximated those of healthy subjects, while the abnormally low use of proprioception remained unchanged. We suggest the post-surgery rehabilitation of proprioception, eg through balance exercises on unstable surfaces and reduced visual input.

Do people with benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) have reduced joint proprioception? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Joint proprioceptive deficit is documented in a variety of musculoskeletal conditions including osteoarthritis, ligament and meniscal injuries, and individuals with increased joint hypermobility, such as those with Ehlers-Danlos. No systematic reviews have assessed joint proprioception in people with benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS). This study addresses this to determine whether people with BJHS exhibit reduced joint proprioception, and, if so, whether this is evident in all age groups. The search strategy was conducted on 31st January 2013. The published literature was assessed usi…

Sensory substitution of elbow proprioception to improve myoelectric control of upper limb prosthesis: experiment on healthy subjects and amputees.

BACKGROUND: Current myoelectric prostheses lack proprioceptive information and rely on vision for their control. Sensory substitution is increasingly developed with non-invasive vibrotactile or electrotactile feedback, but most systems are designed for grasping or object discriminations, and few were tested for online control in amputees. The objective of this work was evaluate the effect of a novel vibrotactile feedback on the accuracy of myoelectric control of a virtual elbow by healthy subjects and participants with an upper-limb amputation at humeral level. METHODS: Sixteen, healthy parti

Assessing age-related proprioceptive changes through active and passive tasks: implications for stroke assessment.

Objective.Voluntary control of motor actions requires precise regulation of proprioceptive and somatosensory functions. While aging is known to impair sensory processing, its effect on proprioception remains unclear. Previous studies report conflicting findings on whether passive proprioception (i.e. during externally driven movements) declines with age, and research on age-related changes in active proprioception (i.e. during voluntary movements) remains limited, particularly in the upper limb. Understanding these changes is critical for identifying and preventing impairments that may affect …

Somatosensory cortex and body representation: Updating the motor system during a visuo-proprioceptive cue conflict.

The brain's representation of hand position is critical for voluntary movement. Representation is multisensory, combining visual and proprioceptive cues. When these cues conflict, the brain recalibrates its unimodal estimates, shifting them closer together to compensate. Converging evidence from research in perception, behavior, and neurophysiology suggest that such updates to body representation are communicated to the motor system to keep hand movements accurate. We hypothesized that primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is crucial in this updating process due to its role in proprioception and c…
