[Cavinton in the prevention of the convulsive syndrome in children after birth injury].

The authors studied the efficacy of cavinton as an agent helpful in preventing neurologic disorders in the newborn with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy due to intracranial birth trauma. The short-term results of the treatment were elucidated in 61 children. In group I including 20 persons given conventional therapy, the disappearance of seizures was recorded in 6 patients; out of 41 children (group II) given additionally cavinton, in 27. Twenty-nine children were followed up for a year. In group I, convulsive paroxysms recurred in 4 patients, whereas in the group II children, no convulsive syn

The ascent into mania: a review of psychological processes associated with the development of manic symptoms.

A comprehensive psychological account of the development of manic symptoms is needed to improve interventions for bipolar disorder. This review aims to develop the basis for such an account by covering three domains of evidence: (1) the multiple symptoms of mania; (2) the signs and symptoms leading up to mania; (3) the psychological processes associated with bipolar disorder, in particular during elevated mood states. It is concluded that the development of mania is characterised by a core experience of psychomotor activation that builds up over time and is associated with, and potentially enh

Specific neurocognitive deficits in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (DLS) is a dysmorphogenic disorder typically associated with severe mental retardation. This report describes a rare case with normal-range verbal intelligence and specific cognitive deficits suggestive of a developmental visuospatial disorder. This was apparent in selective deficits in the ability to integrate visual percepts, copy spatial configurations, and manipulate representations of objects in space. Visual memory and psychomotor skills were also impaired. These deficits occurred within the context of normal language abilities and language-related academic ach

Depressive disorders in older medical inpatients.

Symptoms of depression that are temporary or caused by physical illness can be difficult to differentiate from those that represent a depressive disorder. A diagnosis of depressive disorder depends on the underlying cause, and on the nature, severity and duration of symptoms. Management involves accurate diagnosis and treatment of medical illness, practical interventions to resolve concurrent family, social and economic stressors, and emotional support. Cognitive, behavioral and brief psychodynamic therapies may be helpful in selected cases. Antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy have a

Primary affective disorder criteria and the endogenous-reactive distinction.

Seventy-six patients hospitalized during the course of one year with a depressive episode and without prior history of other psychiatric illness were evaluated retrospectively using the primary affective disorder criteria. Symptom ratings were made by two raters uninvolved in the treatment of the patient and blind to the discharge diagnosis, hospital course, and treatment response. The patients were designated "endogenous" or reactive" based on whether the depressive syndrome was autonomous or responsive to environmental changes. Ninety-two percent of the patients with endogenous depression an

TSEN54 gene-related pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 2 presenting with exaggerated startle response: report of two cases in a family.

The pontocerebellar hypoplasias (PCHs) are a heterogeneous group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by hypoplasia of the ventral pons and cerebellum, with variable cerebral involvement and severe psychomotor retardation. Eight different subtypes (PCH1-8) have been reported up to now. PCH2 is the most common type, generally caused by homozygous mutations in the TSEN54 gene and characterized by cerebellar hypoplasia that affects the hemispheres more severely than the vermis, progressive cerebral atrophy, microcephaly, dyskinesia, seizures and death in early childhood. We present two

Motor control alteration in posturography in learning-disabled children.

BACKGROUND: Some authors have mentioned that intersensory integration is damaged in children with learning disabilities (LDs), and other investigators point to motor control alterations in the same patients. Thus, we decided to study these hypotheses by means of posturographic recordings. METHODS: A highly selected group of 27 children with LDs was compared with 27 children of control group without LDs. Patients and controls were placed on the Equitest equipment platform. Sensory organization tests evaluated different test conditions that systematically vary visual, vestibular, and foot somat

Neurological soft signs in mainstream pupils.

AIMS: (1) To examine the relation between neurological soft signs and measures of cognition, coordination, and behaviour in mainstream schoolchildren. (2) To determine whether high soft sign scores may predict children with significant problems in other areas. METHODS: A total of 169 children aged between 8 and 13 years from mainstream schools were assessed. They form part of a larger study into the outcome of meningococcal disease in childhood. Half had previous meningococcal disease and half were controls. Assessment involved measurement of six soft signs followed by assessment of motor ski

Abnormal Functional Relationship of Sensorimotor Network With Neurotransmitter-Related Nuclei via Subcortical-Cortical Loops in Manic and Depressive Phases of Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder (BD) show opposite psychomotor symptoms. Neuronally, these may depend on altered relationships between sensorimotor network (SMN) and subcortical structures. The study aimed to investigate the functional relationships of SMN with substantia nigra (SN) and raphe nuclei (RN) via subcortical-cortical loops, and their alteration in bipolar mania and depression, as characterized by psychomotor excitation and inhibition. METHOD: In this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study on healthy (n = 67) and BD patients (n =

Correction of the Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome-causing SLC16A2 mutation G401R in a patient derived hiPSC line.

The X-linked Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS) is a genetic disorder characterized by severe psychomotor impairment, resulting from mutations in the SLC16A2 gene, which encodes the thyroid hormone transporter MCT8 (monocarboxylate transporter 8). Previously, we established a hiPSC line from a patient carrying the SLC16A2:R401G mutation (BIHi045-A). Using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing, we targeted exon 3 of SLC16A2 and used single-stranded oligodeoxynucleotides as homology-directed repair templates to correct the R401G missense mutation, generating an isogenic control cell line.

Skin and nails abnormalities in a patient with ZTTK syndrome and a de novo mutation in SON.

Zhu-Tokita-Takenouchi-Kim (ZTTK) syndrome is a rare, severe, and recently described multisystem developmental disorder characterized by delayed psychomotor development and intellectual disability, characteristic facial features, hypotonia, poor overall growth, and visual abnormalities. Mucocutaneous manifestations have not been reported so far among individuals with ZTTK syndrome. Herein, we present a patient with ZTTK syndrome due to a de novo mutation in SON gene, who has dental abnormalities and retronychia of the toenails. We suggest that mucocutaneous features may be a part of the phenoty

Anesthetic management in two siblings with glutaric aciduria type 1.

Glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA-1) is an inborn error of metabolism that results from a deficiency of glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase. This disorder mainly manifests in early childhood and most patients with this condition develop a dystonic-dyskinetic syndrome. We report the anesthetic management of two sisters with GA-1, aged 30 and 17 months respectively at the time of surgery, who presented with macrocephaly and psychomotor delay. The children required CSF shunting procedures for hydrocephalus and subdural fluid collections, which were performed under total intravenous anesthesia with propofol and

A distinct dysmorphic syndrome with spinocerebellar ataxia and probable autosomal recessive inheritance.

Two brothers and their sister aged 8, 13, and 7 years were found to have unusual facies (gross, rough and abundant hair, wide forehead, mild palpebral ptosis, small nose, anteverted nostrils, thick lips, and down-slanting corners of the mouth), dysarthria, delayed psychomotor development, scoliosis, feet deformities, and limb and gait ataxia. The characteristic clinical picture in the three sibs, once compared with other ataxic syndromes, allowed one to conclude that this could correspond to a distinct entity probably inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder.

[Carbohydrate-deficient blood glycoprotein syndrome].

Carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome (CDGS) is a newly delineated group of inherited multisystemic disorders associated with abnormal glycosylation of a number of serum glycoproteins. Several types have been described on the basis of clinical presentation and biochemical changes of the glycosylation of serum transferrin and attributed to different enzymatic defects; their clinical presentations are fully different and a clinical heterogeneity is observed within a same type of CDGS. Patients with CDGS type la usually present with neurologic (hypotonia, strabismus and cerebellar hypoplas

Neuropsychological functioning in treated phenylketonuria.

Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment was performed on a series of patients with treated classical phenylketonuria. All patients showed a similar cluster of performance deficits in motor and visual-motor functions, spatial operations, academic skill areas, and select areas of higher level reasoning. The results are consistent with other neuropsychological studies of patients with early and late diet termination that have used differing assessment methods, thus allowing for greater confidence in the findings. Examination of underlying factors indicates that poor motor coordination, limits

A familial case of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome due to a combination of polyalanine repeat mutation and novel nonpolyalanine repeat mutation.

UNLABELLED: Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by alveolar hypoventilation and autonomic dysregulation caused by mutations in the paired-like homeobox 2b gene. Among these mutations, the co-occurrence of 2 paired-like homeobox 2b mutations is very rare. Herein, we report a case involving 3 individuals from a 2-generation family, each carrying a heterozygous paired-like homeobox 2b 20/25 polyalanine repeat mutation and a novel nonpolyalanine repeat mutation, c.531C>G, on the same allele with variable phenotypes. Although many patients with 20/25 polyala

The Effect of Chronic Alprazolam Intake on Memory, Attention, and Psychomotor Performance in Healthy Human Male Volunteers.

Alprazolam is used as an anxiolytic drug for generalized anxiety disorder and it has been reported to produce sedation and anterograde amnesia. In the current study, we randomly divided 26 healthy male volunteers into two groups: one group taking alprazolam 0.5 mg and the other taking placebo daily for two weeks. We utilized the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) software to assess the chronic effect of alprazolam. We selected Paired Associates Learning (PAL) and Delayed Matching to Sample (DMS) tests for memory, Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVP) for attention

Rett syndrome and epilepsy: an update for child neurologists.

Rett syndrome, a neurogenetic disorder predominantly affecting females, has many characteristic features including psychomotor retardation, impaired language development, hand stereotypies, gait dysfunction, and acquired microcephaly. Although each of these features undoubtedly contributes to the morbidity of this neurologic disorder, epilepsy is perhaps one of the most well-described and problematic, affecting as many as 50%-90% of patients. Seizures can often be refractory, requiring polytherapy and consideration of nonpharmacologic management (e.g., ketogenic diets and vagus nerve stimulati
