Revised Global Typhoid Vaccination Policy.

Typhoid fever is a continuing public health problem in many low- and middle-income countries; however, routine vaccination as a recommended control strategy has not been implemented in the past in most countries. Greater understanding of the typhoid fever burden, the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance, and licensure of a new generation of typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) were instrumental in paving the way for the World Health Organization (WHO) to issue a revised global policy on typhoid vaccines in March 2018. The new policy follows evidence-based recommendations by the WHO Strat

[Diabetes mellitus: an issue for medical certification].

Diabetes mellitus is a progressive and complex disorder that is difficult to treat effectively in the long- term. The number of people with diabetes and other glucose impairments is increasing due to population growth, aging, urbanization, and physical inactivity. In Poland, it has been estimated that there are about two million people with diabetes, half of them are not aware of their illness. Hypoglycemia is the most common and potentially most serious adverse effect of pharmacotherapy in diabetes, regardless of the model of treatment. The potential risk factors for severe hypoglycemia in su

Occupational safety and health: progress toward the 1990 objectives for the nation.

Occupational safety and health is 1 of 15 areas addressed in the Public Health Service's Objectives for the Nation. This area represents 104 million working men and women and the deaths, diseases, and injuries that result from exposures to hazards in their work environment. Characteristics of public health practice are compared with characteristics of occupational safety and health practice. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, is discussed. NIOSH has developed a list of 10 leading work-related diseases and injuri…

Public health research priorities in Europe seen by non-governmental organizations.

BACKGROUND: Public health research is concerned with population health, determinants of health, health systems research, health promotion, environmental health, health protection, disease prevention and research in other fields of public health. During the last decades, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are more often entering the field of public health research. This paper presents results of work within SPHERE (Strengthening Public Health Research in Europe), a European Commission funded study aimed to gather information and produce knowledge on the state of public health research in Eur

Public Health Response to COVID-19 Cases in Correctional and Detention Facilities - Louisiana, March-April 2020.

Correctional and detention facilities face unique challenges in the control of infectious diseases, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (1-3). Among >10 million annual admissions to U.S. jails, approximately 55% of detainees are released back into their communities each week (4); in addition, staff members at correctional and detention facilities are members of their local communities. Thus, high rates of COVID-19 in correctional and detention facilities also have the potential to influence broader community transmission. In March 2020, the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) began

Human rabies--Minnesota, 2007.

On October 20, 2007, a Minnesota resident died from rabies, approximately 1 month after initial symptoms of limb paresthesia, which progressed to flaccid weakness and ataxia. This was the only human rabies case reported in the United States in 2007. A presumptive diagnosis of idiopathic transverse myelitis was considered initially, because of abnormalities detected via spinal cord imaging studies and a lack of laboratory confirmation of a specific infectious etiology. The presumptive diagnosis subsequently was changed to include rabies, based on the patient's rapidly deteriorating neurologic s

Taking the terror out of bioterrorism: planning for a bioterrorist event from a local perspective.

There is a growing concern in the public health community over the potential for domestic biological and chemical acts of terrorism. These types of events do not respect city limits, county lines, or other geopolitical borders and pose a unique challenge for local health departments that have a critical role in detecting, preparing for, and responding to such events. Because direct support for most public health service, including bioterrorism preparedness, occurs primarily at the local level, this is the logical starting point for all planning activities.

Proactive detection of cryptosporidiosis by clinical laboratories. Working Group on Waterborne Cryptosporidiosis.

Laboratories can play a critical and preemptive role as a community's first line of surveillance in detecting waterborne outbreaks when they are aware of increased numbers of stool specimens and suspect or identify Cryptosporidium as the cause of illness. In addition, strong working relationships between clinical laboratories and local or state public health laboratories or agencies can facilitate a meaningful and rapid response related to potential outbreaks. Clinical and public health laboratories potentially play a key role in adding to the limited knowledge of the endemicity and ultimately

The American Heart Association at 100: A Century of Scientific Progress and the Future of Cardiovascular Science: A Presidential Advisory From the American Heart Association.

In 1924, the founders of the American Heart Association (AHA) envisioned an international society focused on the heart and aimed at facilitating research, disseminating information, increasing public awareness, and developing public health policy related to heart disease. This presidential advisory provides a comprehensive review of the past century of cardiovascular and stroke science, with a focus on the AHA's contributions, as well as informed speculation about the future of cardiovascular science into the next century of the organization's history. The AHA is a leader in fundamental, trans

Structural Quality Indicators in Radiation Oncology: Insights and Implications.

AIMS: Over the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the development of quality indicators (QIs) within the field of radiotherapy (RT). However, most of the literature has predominantly focused on process and outcome-related QIs, with limited attention given to structural QIs. This review aims to address this gap by providing insights into structural QIs in RT and examining the complexities and considerations involved in establishing universal standards for these indicators across RT facilities globally. METHODS: An extensive review of published evidence in each sub-topic wa

Enhancing the public health impact of latent tuberculosis infection diagnosis and treatment (ACT4): protocol for a cluster randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) is an important component of the End-TB strategy. However, the number of individuals who successfully complete LTBI treatment remains low as there are losses at all steps in the LTBI 'cascade-of-care'. The reasons for these losses are variable and highly dependent on the setting. We have planned a trial of a standardised public health approach to strengthen the management of household contacts (HHCs) of newly diagnosed patients with pulmonary TB. Assessing costs related to approach is a secondary objective of the study. METH

[Taking Care of Asylum Seekers: Occupational Health Aspects with a Special Focus on Vaccination].

Employees and volunteers often feel insecure about the potential transmission of infectious diseases when taking care of asylum seekers. It could be shown that overall only a minor risk of infection emanates from asylum seekers. However, aspects of occupational health and vaccination should be kept in mind.Besides the standard vaccination the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends for occupational indication, which is given for employees and volunteers in asylum facilities, vaccination against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio (if the last vaccination was more than 10 years before)

Preparing the public health workforce for digital engagement: early evaluation of a massive open online course on using social media for health promotion.

INTRODUCTION: Health professionals are increasingly expected to engage effectively in digital environments; however, many lack any training in digital communication and social media use. This paper reports findings from the early evaluation of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) designed to strengthen public health workforce capability in digital communication and advocacy. METHODS: Quantitative and open-ended survey responses relating to perceived relevance, learning outcomes, usefulness of course components, and early application in professional practice were analysed from interim post-test

Towards the eradication of head lice: literature review and research agenda.

Head lice infestation is a public health issue. In the effort to compile an evidence-base about the physiology, detection, treatment, effects and management strategies of head lice infestations we reviewed current literature. This literature signalled significant evidence gaps and these gaps provide incentives for further research. Our conclusions from the literature are that parents of children are responsible for head lice detection and treatment but have varying access to advice about how best to treat this condition. Concern is exacerbated by misconceptions surrounding the circumstances of

Prevalent Misconceptions About Opioid Use Disorders in the United States Produce Failed Policy and Public Health Responses.

The current opioid crisis in the United States has emerged from higher demand for and prescribing of opioids as chronic pain medication, leading to massive diversion into illicit markets. A peculiar tragedy is that many health professionals prescribed opioids in a misguided response to legitimate concerns that pain was undertreated. The crisis grew not only from overprescribing, but also from other sources, including insufficient research into nonopioid pain management, ethical lapses in corporate marketing, historical stigmas directed against people who use drugs, and failures to deploy evide
