[Examination on maternal morbidity and mortality during delivery and puerperium (author's transl)].

Our data show that it possible to reduce the maternal morbidity - mainly by reduction of the severe complications following caesarean sections. The higher maternal risk during and after operative delivery (forceps, caesarean section) should prompt the physician to analyse the indication and frequency of operative interventions within certain periods of time.

Postpartum depression.

Though postpartum depression has been observed for years, research into it has increased recently, especially in England. Distinguishing the rarer, severe puerperal psychosis from milder, more frequent "maternity blues" has provided a clearer framework for new research. Hormonal changes, biogenic amines, stress, and lack of social support have been proposed as explanations for postpartum depression, but the etiology is still not clear. Hormones, tranquilizers, and antidepressants are some modern therapeutic measures employed, whereas electroconvulsive shock therapy was once the most frequent t

A predictive study of post-partum depression: some predisposing characteristics.

Postnatal depression was investigated by the antenatal screening of a sample of women for factors that might be predictive of later disturbance. The women were assessed when they were 36 weeks pregnant on anxiety, hostility, and locus of control. Predictions were tested by assessing depression 6 weeks after birth. Both high anxiety and high hostility were positively associated with postnatal depression. Intropunitiveness was not significantly related to subsequent depression. The most depressed women were those who had been the more extrapunitive as well as the more hostile. Women who perceive

Late puerperal hemorrhage of a patient with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disorder. The obstetric course of women with KTS varies. Complications include bleeding, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), thromboembolic events, etc. PATIENT CONCERNS:: Here, we report a case of late puerperal hemorrhage of a Chinese puerpera with KTS. The repeating severe hemorrhage, the DIC, and the Kasabach-Merrit syndrome made the treatment more difficult. DIAGNOSIS: KTS is a mixed malformation with a vascular component that is characterized by abnormal development of veins, capillaries, and lymphatics. O

Shock in pregnancy: pathophysiology and morphologic findings.

Sepsis and non-septic shock in pregnancy show characteristic modifications which are caused a) by physiologic changes in hemostasis primarily in the third trimester of pregnancy, b) by etiologic distinctions of shock regarded as pregnancy-specific, c) by hemodynamic changes in the circulation during pregnancy, d) by the ability of the healthy, young organism to compensate adequately. In the dead fetus syndrome and in non-septic shock, i.e., in amnionic fluid embolism and in abruptio placentae, the clinical picture is often governed by marked secundary fibrinolysis. Retroplacental hematoma, the

Psychometric Properties of Brief Screening Tests for Alcohol Use Disorders during Pregnancy in Argentina.

Background Considering the physical, mental and behavioral problems related to fetal alcohol exposure, prenatal clinical guides suggest a brief evaluation of alcohol consumption during pregnancy to detect alcohol intake and to adjust interventions, if required. Even if any alcohol use should be considered risky during pregnancy, identifying women with alcohol use disorders is important because they could need a more specific intervention than simple advice to abstain. Most screening tests have been developed and validated in male populations and focused on the long-term consequences of heavy a

Perinatal Loss: The Impact on Maternal Mental Health.

IMPORTANCE: Psychological reactions to perinatal loss, although often self-limited, may lead to significant psychological morbidities. Obstetrician-gynecologists and other maternal health providers play a key role in recognizing the range of psychological responses to perinatal loss and providing education, support, and treatment options to their patients. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to define psychological reactions associated with perinatal loss, examine psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic treatments for psychiatric morbidities, discuss interpregnancy interval following perinatal loss, an

Clinical management of hypertensive disorders in postpartum women.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) could persist post-partum, or appear for the first time after delivery and could require a pharmacological treatment. It was found no evidence in literature about which therapy should be used in puerperal hypertension. The aim of this review is to determine the most effective therapy and best in terms of risk-benefit ratio for the treatment of high postpartum systemic arterial blood pressure in women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) or in those with de-novo diagnosis of hypertension in the puerperium. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (C

Factors associated with maternal death in an intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVE:: To identify factors associated with maternal death in patients admitted to an intensive care unit. METHODS:: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a maternal intensive care unit. All medical records of patients admitted from January 2012 to December 2014 were reviewed. Pregnant and puerperal women were included; those with diagnoses of hydatidiform mole, ectopic pregnancy, or anembryonic pregnancy were excluded, as were patients admitted for non-obstetrical reasons. Death and hospital discharge were the outcomes subjected to comparative analysis. RESULTS:: A total of 373 patie

Pharmacokinetics of Meloxicam in Different Animal Species: A Comprehensive Review.

Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory in the oxicam group. It has been extensively used in human and veterinary medicine for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities. Meloxicam has shown high therapeutic potential for disorders such as osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal disorder, acute respiratory infection, puerperal septicemia, mastitis and mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome. Although meloxicam pharmacokinetic has been described for numerous species, no paper summarizes the existing literature on this field. Thus, the aim of this review was to carry out a review

Causal effects of gestational hypertension on women's health: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational hypertension (GH) is linked to complications impacting women's health, with confounded causal links in observational studies. This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate GH's effects on women's diseases. METHODS: To reduce confounding and identify robust GH associations, we selected 149 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables (IVs). The data were extracted from publicly accessible genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method served as the primary MR analysis, with sensitivity verification con
