PURPOSE: Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) delivers high-dose external radiation to a small intracranial lesion. The efficacy of palliative radiation therapy in the treatment of spinal cord and cauda equina compression due to metastatic malignant melanoma was evaluated in 38 sites in 35 patients treated between 1970 and 1990.
