INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare proliferative disease of uncertain etiology, characterized by the proliferation of fusate or epithelioid myofibroblasts admixed with predominantly mononuclear inflammatory cells. IMT is generally considered a benign lesion, although in some cases this neoplasm has shown an aggressive behavior in terms of local recurrence and metastasis. We report the case of a patient with a ten-year history of ulcerative colitis affected by IMT of the transverse colon and by synchronous gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of stomach.

The frequency and sites of carcinoma of the sigmoid colon and rectum are discussed. The complications associated with Dixon's anterior resection of the rectum are described, with particular reference to factors affecting cicatrisation of the colic anastomoses, followed by dehiscences and their degree of seriousness. A personal serier for the years 1969 to 1975 is presented and the advantages and disadvantages of derivative colostomy are explained. Comparison with similar series in which colostomy was or was not employed is used to elicit the reasons why it may be regarded as superfluous.

Third space endoscopy (TSE), a type of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, was first introduced a decade ago, and since then, has revolutionized the field of therapeutic endoscopy. Splenosis is a condition in which splenic tissue is present in a non-anatomical position. Submucosal lipomas are usually harmless neoplasms arising from submucosal adipocytes. They are found most commonly in the colon, but may develop in any part of the gastrointestinal tract. A review of findings on flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS), colonoscopy and selected double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) radiographs from a group of 66 patients with rectal bleeding was performed to test the value of an algorithm in the detection of colonic cancers and polyps. In this algorithm the FS findings would direct patients either to colonoscopy or to a modified DCBE which focused attention on the colon proximal to the sigmoid. In this article, we report two new cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in children and review the literature over the past twenty years. This series of 70 cases demonstrates that the clinical pictures observed in children are similar to those of adults. Rectal prolapse or extrusion of polyps can be the clue to the diagnosis at an early age, even in the absence of pigmentation, which can appear later. This study evaluated the effects of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent piroxicam on chronic radiation proctitis in the rat. Forty female Wistar rats received a 2250-cGy dose of irradiation to the distal 2 cm of the colon.
