Manganese (Mn) is an industrial neurotoxicant in humans and animal models limited to rodent species. The present study analyses the potential neurotoxicity of acute Mn administration in young chicks. The acute (24 h) LD50 values of Mn following intraperitoneal, intramuscular, subcutaneous and oral administrations of MnCl2 in seven-day-old chicks were 21.3 mg kg-1, 28.1 mg kg-1, 28.1 mg kg-1 and 469.5 mg kg-1 body weight of Mn, respectively. A 15-year-old girl suffered recurrent syncopal episodes during 7 years. Events were precipitated by exercise or emotional stress, leading to the diagnosis of reflex syncope. Exercise testing induced recurrent salvos of nonsustained right ventricular outflow tract tachycardia. This arrhythmia is often asymptomatic, reflex syncope is very frequent and both causes are related to the same triggering situations. It was therefore essential to obtain recordings during syncopal events and to observe the clinical evolution under effective treatment in order to make the right diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Bunyavirus infections, including those caused by Bunyamwera serogroup orthobunyaviruses, represent a significant and yet likely still vastly underappreciated cause of mild to moderate human febrile infections. In severe cases, these infections can also cause neurological disease, particularly meningitis and encephalitis, and infection can even be fatal. However, with a few exceptions, information regarding the mechanisms underlying the neuroinvasion and neuropathogenesis of such infections is limited. This is due in part to a lack of animal models to facilitate such studies.
