Behavioral treatment of high blood pressure: III. Follow-up results and treatment recommendations.

This article is the third in a series of studies designed to evaluate systolic blood pressure biofeedback and relaxation in the treatment of elevated blood pressure. It reports on the posttreatment follow-up results. The main findings were that patients who received the behavioral treatments could achieve and sustain reductions in blood pressure for at least 18 months. Furthermore, a number of patients who were receiving diuretic therapy to control their pressures were able to maintain reduced pressure for at least 9 months after discontinuing medication. A model for a behavioral-stepped care

Massage has no observable effect on distress in children with burns: A randomized, observer-blinded trial.

IMPORTANCE: In a previous observational study we found that massage therapy reduced anxiety and stress in pediatric burn patients. We aimed to test this effect in a randomized controlled trial. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether (1) aromatherapy massage can provide relaxation to hospitalized children with burns; (2) massage with aromatherapy oil is more effective than without; and (3) massage sessions are more effective when repeated. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Randomized controlled clinical trial with 3 arms conducted in a burns unit from April 2013 to December 2014 in Cape Town, South

Protective effects of bioactive components targeting β2-adrenergic receptors and muscarinic-3 acetylcholine receptor in Zhisou San on ovalbumin-induced allergic asthma.

One promising approach to overcome drug resistance in asthma treatments involves dual-target therapy, specifically targeting the β2 adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) and muscarinic-3 acetylcholine receptor (M3R). This study investigated the anti-asthma effects and dual-target mechanisms of glycyrrhizic acid, hesperidin, and platycodin D (GHP) from Zhisou San. GHP administration effectively attenuated OVA-induced inflammatory infiltration and overproduction of mucus in asthmatic mice. Additionally, GHP treatment significantly suppressed M3R and promoted β2-AR activation, resulting in the relaxation o

Rocuronium-sugammadex decreases the severity of post-electroconvulsive therapy agitation.

A 51-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of refractory major depressive disorder and unresponsive to antidepressants underwent 8 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) every 48 hours. Succinylcholine was used for muscle relaxation until the sixth ECT session, and midazolam was administered for severe emergence agitation that recurred after each session. In the sixth ECT session, rocuronium, 0.4 mg/kg, was used for muscle relaxation and sugammadex, 2 mg/kg, for reversal of muscle paralysis. Subsequently, a clear decrease in post-ECT agitation was observed. We suggest that this combinati

Mind-body interventions for cancer-related dyspnoea: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Dyspnoea is a common and distressing symptom experienced by people with cancer which can impact physical functioning, mental health and quality of life (QoL). Mind-body interventions (MBIs) involving physical and mental practices are based on the belief that movement, cognition and emotions influence physical and spiritual well-being. This review investigated the effect of MBIs on dyspnoea and associated outcomes in people with cancer. Searches were performed using seven different electronic databases for studies published after January 1, 2013, with the keywords combined for cancer, dyspnoea

The role of complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of eating disorders: A systematic review.

This systematic review critically appraises the role of complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of those with an eating disorder. Sixteen studies were included in the review. The results of this review show that the role of complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of those with an eating disorder is unclear and further studies should be conducted. A potential role was found for massage and bright light therapy for depression in those with Bulimia Nervosa and a potential role for acupuncture and relaxation therapy, in the treatment of State Anxiety, for those with…

Interpersonal Problems, Mindfulness, and Therapy Outcome in an Acceptance-Based Behavior Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the role interpersonal problems play in response to two treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD); an acceptance-based behavior therapy (ABBT) and applied relaxation (AR), and to examine how the development of mindfulness may be related to change in interpersonal problems over treatment and at follow-up. METHOD: Eighty-one individuals diagnosed with GAD (65.4% female, 80.2% identified as white, average age 32.92) were randomized to receive 16 sessions of either ABBT or AR. GAD severity, interpersonal problems, and mindfulness were measured at pre-treatm

[Electrogastrography monitoring of the effectiveness of prokinetic and cognitive therapy in functional dyspepsia].

INTRODUCTION: Evidence based management of functional gastrointestinal disorders is a controversial issue. AIM: The purpose of this work was to evaluate electrogastrography (EGG) monitoring of the different treatment modalities in functional dyspepsia patients. PATIENTS/METHODS: 45 patients with functional dyspepsia were entered into the study. Dominant frequency was calculated from recorded contractions/min (cpm) and classified according to international standards: bradygastria (0.0-2.0 cpm), normal (2 < x < 4 cpm) and tachygastria (4-10 cpm). Results were compared to healthy controls. In 1

Group psychological treatment for chest pain with normal coronary arteries.

We used a psychological treatment package (education, relaxation, breathing training, graded exposure to activity and exercise, and challenging automatic thoughts about heart disease) to treat 60 patients who had continuing chest pain despite cardiological reassurance following haemodynamically normal angiography. The treatment was delivered in six sessions over eight weeks to groups of up to six patients. The patients kept daily records of chest pain episode frequency and nitrate use. Questionnaires were used to assess anxiety, depression and disability. Exercise tolerance was tested by tread

Evaluation of a psychological treatment package for treating pain in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

We examined the utility of psychological treatment procedures for children with high levels of pain associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). By the use of a multiple baseline across subjects design, four children were assigned to an immediate treatment group, and four children to a delayed treatment group. The six-session treatment included relaxation training, electromyogram, and thermal biofeedback for the child; mothers were trained in the use of behavioral techniques for managing physical therapy and school attendance. Visual inspection of the data indicates small changes on ch

Multi-component treatment for posttraumatic nightmares in Vietnam veterans: two case studies.

Posttraumatic nightmares (PTNMs) are trauma-related distressing dreams that cause a person to wake up. PTNMs can be a devastating addition to the clinical picture of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), because they can result in increased levels of PTSD symptoms and overall distress and decreased sleep; they are also often resistant to typical PTSD treatments. While specialized treatments have been developed and empirically examined in the civilian population, these treatments have not been thoroughly explored with the Veteran population, despite the fact that 50%-88% of Vietnam Veterans exp

Chronic tension-type headache treated with acupuncture, physical training and relaxation training. Between-group differences.

The aim of this study was to compare acupuncture, relaxation training and physical training in the treatment of chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). The study comprised 90 consecutive patients with CTTH who were randomly allocated to acupuncture, relaxation training or physical training. Headache intensity, headache-free days and headache-free periods were registered using a visual analogue scale and a headache diary. The measurements were made 4 weeks before, immediately after, and 3 and 6 months after the treatment period. Immediately after the last treatment, the number of headache-free pe

Behavioral treatment of angina-like chest pain in patients with hyperventilation syndrome.

The hyperventilation syndrome is present in as many as 50% of patients with non-cardiac chest pain. This study evaluated a behavioral treatment of this disorder in three adult females. They had long histories of chest pain and were documented to be free of coronary artery disease. Each subject met the DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder. Following treatment, all subjects showed a marked decrease in the frequency and intensity of chest pain episodes and in the frequency of shortness of breath episodes. Two subjects maintained their progress at one-year follow-up. The results l

Diverse relaxation rates exist among rat cardiomyocytes isolated from a single myocardial region.

KEY POINTS: Prior studies have shown variation in the functional properties of cardiomyocytes isolated from different regions of the left ventricular myocardium. We found that these region-dependent variations vanish below a tissue volume of ∼7 mm3 in the adult rat myocardium, revealing a fixed level of intrinsic relaxation rate heterogeneity that is independent of tissue volume. Within these microscopically varying cell populations, fast-relaxing cells were shown to have elevated phosphorylated troponin I compared to slow-relaxing cells. Relaxation rate was also correlated with cardiomyocyte

Exploring the relaxation effects of Coptis chinensis and berberine on the lower esophageal sphincter: potential strategies for LES motility disorders.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal achalasia, a primary disorder impacting the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), presents symptoms such as dysphagia, regurgitation, chest pain, and weight loss. Traditional treatments, including calcium channel blockers and nitrates, offer limited relief, prompting exploration into alternative therapies. This study examines the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), focusing on Coptis chinensis (C. chinensis) and its principal component, berberine, for modulating LES relaxation, offering a new perspective on treatment possibilities. METHODS: This research evaluat

Cerebral Hemodynamic Responses to Disease-Modifying and Curative Sickle Cell Disease Therapies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hemoglobinopathy resulting in hemoglobin-S production, hemolytic anemia, and elevated stroke risk. Treatments include oral hydroxyurea, blood transfusions, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Our objective was to evaluate the neurologic relevance of these therapies by characterizing how treatment-induced changes in hemoglobin (Hb) affect brain health biomarkers. METHODS: In this interventional study, adults with and without SCD underwent a 3T-MRI at Vanderbilt University Medical Center at 2 time points before and after

Migraine variants and beyond.

Migraine is amongst the oldest of diseases known to mankind. Migraine is a heterogenous entity, usually characterised by periodic attacks of headache on one or both sides of the head. These may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity of the eyes to light (photophobia), increased sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), dizziness, blurred vision, cognitive disturbances, and other symptoms. Migraines are not always preceded by an aura and some migraines may not include headache. If migraine does not manifest itself in the form of headache but in some other form such as paroxysmal ep

Treatment of atopic dermatitis: a comparison of psychological and dermatological approaches to relapse prevention.

A randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of 4 group treatments for atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin disorder characterized by severe itching and eczema: dermatological educational program (DE), autogenic training as a form of relaxation therapy (AT), cognitive-behavioral treatment (BT), and the combined DE and BT treatments (DEBT). BT comprised relaxation, self-control of scratching, and stress management. Group treatments were also compared with standard medical care (SMC). Assessments at 1-year follow-up showed that the psychological treatments (AT, BT, and DEBT) led to sign…
