Oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) involves the achievement of the process of oocyte maturation in vitro Clinically, it was introduced several decades ago as a potentially more patient-friendly and less expensive assisted reproductive technology (ART) approach, as immature oocytes collected from mid-antral follicles can be matured in vitro without prior gonadotrophin stimulation. However, IVM oocytes are developmentally less competent compared with oocytes matured in vivo, a fact that has encouraged the use of short FSH priming and/or hCG triggering in IVM cycles. These alternatives have generat

Donkeys and mules have historically played an important role in agriculture and are now gaining recognition for their contributions to animal conservation, milk production, tourism, and equid-assisted services. However, their distinctive reproductive challenges pose obstacles to breeding management. As a result, the application of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) could help address these challenges, enhancing their roles in both traditional and emerging industries. This review examines the current and emerging in vitro techniques for breeding donkeys and mules. Key methodologies such

Although the controversy about varicocele treatment options and their benefit has not been resolved, evidence is increasing that a cautious use of varicocele surgery contributes to effective management of male factor subfertility. Moreover, timely varicocele treatment might be an equally valuable prevention of later subfertility as early treatment of cryptorchidism. In reconstructive surgery of the ductal system, a more frequent use of tubulovasostomy can prevent initial failure. Furthermore, the cryopreservation of spermatic fluid for intracytoplasmic sperm injection can obviate a repeat proc

Male infertility is a great matter of concern as out of 15% of infertile couples in the reproductive age, about 40% are contributed by male factors alone. For DNA condensation during spermatogenesis, constrained DNA nicking is required, which if increased beyond certain level results in infertility in men. High sperm DNA Fragmentation (SDF) majorly contributes to male infertility and its association with regards to poor natural conception and assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes is equivocal. Apoptosis, protamination failure and the excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are consid

In a recent publication Tom Douglas and Katrien Devolder have proposed a new account of genetic parenthood, building on the work of Heidi Mertes. Douglas and Devolder's account aims to solve, among other things, the question of who are the genetic parents of an individual created through somatic cell nuclear transfer (i.e. cloning): (a) the nuclear DNA provider or (b) the progenitors of the nuclear DNA provider. Such a question cannot be answered by simply appealing to the folk account of genetic parenthood, according to which the genetic parents of an individual are those individuals who prod

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) testing is used as a biomarker of fertility potential, despite limited evidence supporting its predictive value. This article examines how AMH testing is used and contested in Turkey through an analysis of online discussions on a women's forum. We analyze how women report doctors' claims and recommendations regarding low AMH values, how they collectively interpret test results, and how they negotiate anticipatory medicine. The findings show that interpretive contests over AMH testing emerge between patients and doctors and are shaped by multiple temporal frameworks

Background and Objectives: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent disorder characterized by the presence of functional endometrial tissue, comprising both glandular and stromal components, located outside the uterine cavity, affecting approximately 6-10% of women of reproductive age and up to 30-50% of those with infertility. Increasing evidence indicates that endometriosis is not solely a localized gynecological condition but rather a systemic inflammatory and immune-mediated disease. Chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation contribute to disease progression and may impair reprod

Patients undergoing treatment for infertility experience higher levels of psychological distress than the general population. Current research suggests that the increased stress, anxiety and depression levels in these individuals may be affecting their emotional well-being, treatment drop-out rates and clinical outcomes. To mitigate the effects of mental health symptoms for fertility patients, psychological interventions should be considered a vital part of fertility care. Treatments such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, the Mind-Body Program for Infertility and virtual mental health services

BACKGROUND: Patients commonly struggle with secondary infertility following a prior cesarean section due to factors related to the delivery. Distortions in the pelvic anatomy may complicate subsequent treatment attempts using assisted reproductive technology (ART) on different levels, including the myometrium, endometrium, and cervix, as well as intraperitoneal structures.
METHODS: In this narrative review, major databases were searched to examine the effect of a prior cesarean delivery (CD) on pregnancy outcomes from subsequent ART treatments.
FINDINGS: Some mechanisms for the detrimental e

Gamete donation has become a crucial part of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs), providing hope to individuals, including those who may have no other option for parenthood. This process comes with a wide range of ethical, medical, and legal challenges that need to be carefully addressed to protect the well-being and rights of all parties involved: donors, recipients, and offspring. Navigating these complexities requires strict ethical standards, robust regulatory frameworks, and international collaboration. By standardizing these, the field of gamete donation can continue to develop whi

This month's Views and Reviews opens a window to the future. What lies on the horizon for assisted reproduction and gamete/embryo biology? We focus on in vitro gametogenesis and germline editing. Czukiewska et al. reviewed the current state of the science of female germ cell development. This well-supported section recognizes the progress made and the unique aspect of oogenesis that makes full maturation and reproductive capacity difficult. Amato et al. addressed germline editing and the potential capacity to prevent transmission of monogenic diseases with significant morbidity and mortality t

In vitro gametogenesis (IVG) is a biotechnological development which aims to replicate the process of gametogenesis outside the human body. If proven safe and effective, IVG could disrupt various social and biological norms, and create new reproductive possibilities and opportunities for those who experience infertility as a result of both social and biomedical factors. In this article we argue that the new reproductive possibilities provided by IVG, much like earlier discussions of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) dating back to the Warnock Report, highlight the importance of explori

Endometriomas can be managed through various approaches, including careful observation, medical suppressive therapy, or surgical intervention. Malignancy is rarely a concern in women of reproductive age, making pain relief and the management of infertility the primary foci of treatment. Pain is seldom due to endometriomas per se, and is most often associated with deep endometriotic lesions, usually involving the parametria and the bowel. Patients with infertility are better served with assisted reproductive technology (ART), as endometriomas do not appear to affect oocyte developmental potenti

Uterus transplantation (UT) is a surgical procedure that seeks to correct absolute uterine infertility. As such, it is coupled with assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Currently performed as an investigational procedure in France, this technique could be subject to a legal framework in the future. Given its specificities, the French legislator will need to state their position on several matters. Regarding the donor, they will need to determine whether the benefits for the infertile woman justify exposure of a living person to the risks of the removal procedure. If necessary, they will h

When considering the typical lesions associated with endometriosis, such as endometriomas, and pelvic adherences involving the tubes, it is very clear how this pathology may impair both natural and assisted reproductive technology (ART) fertility. It may be more difficult for clinicians to recognize that endometriosis can reduce female fertility potential through other mechanisms which may be independent of direct damage to ovarian reserve and tubal function. The most recent clinical studies have shown that endometriosis is associated with increased risk of infertility, independent of the type

Following reports of mpox infections in Europe and the Americas, the World Health Organisation has declared that mpox constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. Since the mpox virus (MPXV) has been detected in semen of MPX-infected men, this puts healthcare professionals in medically assisted reproduction clinics, such as clinical embryologists and andrologists, at risk of MPX infection by handling semen from infected men. This commentary provides information about MPXV and highlights vigilance steps with regards to processing semen, oocytes, pre-implantation embryos and p

Innovation is a key driver of care provision in assisted reproductive technologies (ART). ART providers offer a range of add-on interventions, aiming to augment standard in vitro fertilization protocols and improve the chances of a live birth. Particularly in the context of commercial provision, an ever-increasing array of add-ons are marketed to ART patients, even when evidence to support them is equivocal. A defining feature of ART is hope-hope that a cycle will lead to a baby or that another test or intervention will make a difference. Yet such hope also leaves ART patients vulnerable in a
