BACKGROUND AND AIM: During recent years, there has been an increased focus on reducing use of mechanical restraint in psychiatric care. Studies show that implementing an assessment tool could potentially prevent or decrease the number of episodes of mechanical restraint. This study aims to examine the association between use of the Danish assessment tool for psychiatric inpatients diagnosed with mania (MAS-M) and mechanical restraint to highlight if number, type, and duration of restraint could be prevented or reduced by this procedure.

Use of force against immigration detainees during attempts to expel them from the UK must be limited to that which is strictly necessary and proportionate under the circumstances, using accepted methods of restraint designed to minimise injury risk to all concerned. Restraints have been subsumed under the rubric of "interventions" in the nursing literature. However, alarming reports of lethal consequences proximal to their use raise the issue to a life and death matter that requires immediate attention from professionals. Little is known about the mechanisms of death and other adverse consequences of restraint use. This article describes these mechanisms and also considers some hypothesized factors and adverse effects associated with their use.

The effect of verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, was studied against stress (cold restraint), aspirin and pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcers in rats. Verapamil inhibited ulcerogenic response and ulcer index in all the three types of ulcers. Verapamil also decreased total and free gastric acidity without changing gastric secretory volume.
