Spoilage of vegetable crops by bacteria and fungi and related health hazards.

After harvest, vegetables are often spoiled by a wide variety of microorganisms including many bacterial and fungal species. The most common bacterial agents are Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas spp., Corynebacterium, Xanthomonas campestris, and lactic acid bacteria with E. carotovora being the most common, attacking virtually every vegetable type. Fungi commonly causing spoilage of fresh vegetables are Botrytis cinerea, various species of the genera Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Phomopsis, Fusarium, Penicillium, Phoma, Phytophthora, Pythium and Rhizopus spp., Botrytis …

Invasive Colonic Mucormycosis in an Immunocompromised Postliver Transplant Patient.

Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) is an invasive fungal disease caused by Rhizopus species, most commonly implicated in diabetic ketoacidosis and other immunocompromised states. This report presents a unique case of colonic mucormycosis in a patient several weeks after liver transplant. The patient's course was complicated by polymicrobial infection and intra-abdominal abscesses, ultimately leading to septic shock and death. This case is the first of its kind to describe such malignant abdominal mucormycosis in a solid organ transplant recipient.

Cerebral mucormycosis in diabetic mice after intrasinus challenge.

Rhinocerebral involvement is the most common form of mucormycosis in uncontrolled diabetic patients. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic and normal mice were challenged by intrasinus inoculation of Rhizopus oryzae to determine their susceptibility to infection by this route. Ninety percent of diabetic mice and no normal mice died after inoculation with 10(6) spores. Intrasinus inoculations caused minimal direct trauma and low levels of brain inocula, but progressive cerebral infections were induced in diabetic mice.

Isavuconazole: Need for therapeutic drug monitoring and CYP polymorphism testing.

In this patient of invasive sinusitis due to Rhizopus arrhizus, Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) showed a high trough level (88mg/L) of isavuconazole on standard doses. Genotyping revealed CYP3A5∗3/∗3 polymorphism which indicated poor metabolism of isavuconazole. Switching to posaconazole was attempted but there was intolerance to posaconazole. To our knowledge, this is the first patient in whom both TDM and CYP genotyping were used to plan very low and infrequent doses of isavuconazole.

Cutaneous mucormycosis with suspected dissemination in a patient with metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma.

Mucormycosis is a frequently lethal fungal infection that most commonly affects patients with poorly controlled diabetes or other immunosuppressed states. We report the case of a suspected disseminated Rhizopus infection in a patient who was pursuing naturopathic treatment including mud baths for metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma. He was empirically treated with liposomal amphotericin B but opted to stop treatment following multiorgan failure. The patient passed away on the tenth day of his hospital admission.

Successful treatment of rhino-facial mucormycosis in a diabetic patient.

Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressing and lethal infection caused by fungi of the order mucorales. The disease occurs mostly in patients with uncontrolled diabetes or other predisposing systemic conditions. We report a case of rhinofacial mucormycosis in a 39-year-old diabetic patient. The diagnosis was established by clinical examination, imaging, and confirmed by mycological examination. Rhizopus arrhizus was isolated. He was successfully treated with amphotericin B, surgical resection, diabetes control and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Rhizopusmycosis in a harbor porpoise from the Baltic Sea.

A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found. In addition, a focal ulcerative gastritis of the first stomach, due to a nematode infection, was present and is suspected to be the portal of entry for the fungus.

Invasive cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Absidia corymbifera after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

Mucormycotic infections caused by fungi of the families Rhizopus, Mucor or Absidia are rare and usually associated with diabetes or immunosuppression. We describe a patient with invasive necrotizing cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Absidia corymbifera shortly after allogeneic BMT. The infection was successfully treated with surgical debridement and liposomal amphotericin B for 6 weeks. Recognition of these rare infections requires a high index of suspicion. These patients should be evaluated with tissue biopsy and cultures and treated without delay.

Hospital-acquired gangrenous mucormycosis.

A post-operative diabetic patient who had been treated for Serratia marcescens bacterial sepsis developed recurrent thrombosis of the left femoral artery following intra-arterial instrumentation. Pathological examination of arterial thrombus ultimately demonstrated invasive mucormycosis of the femoral artery and cultures of this material grew Rhizopus oryzae. The occurrence of cutaneous and subcutaneous mucormycosis is reviewed, as well as recently recognized nosocomial risk factors for mucormycosis, such as elasticized bandages and wound dressings.

Case report. Localized pulmonary zygomycosis without pre-existing immunocompromised status.

Pulmonary zygomycosis rarely occurs without pre-existing immunocompromised disease. A 72-year-old male was found to have a nodular shadow (3 cm x 4 cm) in the right S8 and S9 on a chest X-ray. Right lower lobectomy was performed and histological examination of the resected material demonstrated pulmonary zygomycosis. Hyphae stained positively not only with Grocott-Gomori methenamine silver staining, but also with an anti-Rhizopus oryzae polyclonal antibody.

Mucormycosis in diabetic ketoacidosis. Role of unbound iron binding capacity of transferrin.

Increased susceptibility to Rhizopus oryzae in diabetes was investigated using mice in which diabetic ketoacidosis was experimentally induced. All of the diabetic mice which had developed ketoacidosis died within four days after inoculation of R. oryzae and their serum UIBCs (Unbound iron binding capacity) were significantly lower than those of the normal control mice. This study suggested that the decreased serum UIBC produced by diabetic ketoacidosis enhances the growth of R. oryzae in vivo.

[Disseminated mucormycosis in AIDS].

Mucormycosis is a rare often fatal opportunistic condition. It mainly occurs in immunocompromised subjects but rarely in AIDS patients. An eighteen-year-old HIV+ man from Zaire died rapidly from disseminated mucormycosis with pulmonary, cardiac, renal, hepatic, splenic and gastric involvement. Fungi were observed in all these organs with a particular vascular trophism. Rhizopus orizae was identified on cultures. Rapid microscopic diagnosis, in the localized stage, could improve the poor prognosis of this infection.

Violacein and its antifungal activity: comments and potentialities.

Violacein is an important natural antimicrobial pigment that is mainly produced by Chromobacterium violaceum and Janthinobacterium lividum. It presents a significant range of effects against phytopathogenic and human fungi, besides being featured as having low toxicity, and by its important ecological role in protecting amphibian species and applications in dyed medical fabric. The hypothesis about violacein's action mechanisms against mucormycosis (Rhizopus arrhizus) and candidiasis (Candida auris) is herein discussed based on data available in the scientific literature.

Prophylaxis with Isavuconazole or Posaconazole Protects Immunosuppressed Mice from Pulmonary Mucormycosis.

We assessed prophylactic or continuous therapy of isavuconazole, posaconazole, or voriconazole in treating pulmonary murine mucormycosis. In the prophylaxis studies, only isavuconazole treatment resulted in significantly improved survival and lowered tissue fungal burden of immunosuppressed mice infected with Rhizopus delemar. In the continuous treatment studies, isavuconazole and posaconazole, but not voriconazole, equally prolonged survival time and lowered tissue fungal burden compared to placebo-treated mice. These results support the use of isavuconazole and posaconazole in prophylaxis tr…

Fungal Production of Fumaric Acid From Crude Glycerol: Different Approaches to the Process Including Intermediate Accumulation of Microalgal Biomass.

BACKGROUND: Interest in processing high-tonnage biodiesel production waste (crude glycerol and microalgal biomass after lipid extraction) into commercial products is steadily growing. Moreover, it is attractive to utilize these wastes for the microbiological production of fumaric acid (FA) using immobilized microorganisms, as it combines chemical and biological processes. METHODS: The authors developed original approaches to FA production, which immobilize microalgal Chlorella vulgaris cells and the mycelium of the fungus Rhyzopus oryzae. Traditional techniques were employed for cultivating m

Cutaneous mucormycosis in advanced HIV disease.

Angionvasive mucormycosis is an emerging fungal disease known to affect mainly diabetics or subjects with profound neutropenia. Infection usually occurs through the inhalation route, but cutaneous inoculation may occur after trauma or burns. However, mucormycosis remains unusual in HIV infection. We report a fatal case of cutaneous mucormycosis due to Rhizopus arrhizus involving the scalp following herpes zoster infection. The patient was a 42-year-old man with advanced AIDS failing on salvage antiretroviral therapy. The fungus was diagnosed on the basis of histopathology and culture. Our case…

Wound zygomycosis (mucormycosis) in otherwise healthy adults.

Two previously healthy men sustained trauma that caused extensive soft tissue damage together with soil contamination. Within three days, rapidly advancing necrosis was observed at the wound margins. Histologic examination revealed the presence of non-septate branching hyphae characteristic of Mucorales within tissues and in the lumen of blood vessels. In one case, the disease was unrecognized until widespread dissemination had taken place, and the patient died; in the other, a cure resulted from aggressive medical and surgical management. Infections due to Mucorales generally occur in immune-
