The inducing capacity of sulfhydryl (SH)-containing amino acids (cysteine and glutathione) on post-nodal pieces (PNPs) of stage 4 chick blastoderms was investigated. Ten excised rabbit corneas were bathed posteriorly with glutathione bicarbonate Ringers solution (GBR), while anteriorly the bathing solution was either GBR or sodium chloride solution (NaCl). Liquor cerebrospinalis, obtained from patients with various diseases, inhibited Na, K-ATPase from rat and bovine synaptic membranes and did not influence on the activity of Mg-ATPase. The inhibition was independent on the type of disease. The inhibitory effect of liquor cerebrospinalis disappeared after dyalisis of it against Krebs-Ringer solution. Liquor cerebrospinalis appears to contain an endogenous inhibitor of synaptic Na,K-ATPase, which controls the enzymatic activity in vivo.

A case of successful correction of renovascular hypertension by means of extracorporeal repair of fibroplasia of the main trunk and an aneurysm of a secondary division branch of the left renal artery is presented. The ureter was not transected and a segment of the internal ilac artery with two branches was used for the substitution of the diseased renal artery segments. The mutant mouse pearl, characterized by its hypopigmentation, has a specific functional defect in a sensory system--the retina. The intact pearl mouse has reduced sensitivity in the dark-adapted condition. Normal sensitivity is restored by isolation and superfusion of the retina with bicarbonate-buffered Ringer solution, suggesting that the retinal expression of the pearl mutation depends on a diffusible substance. The pearl phenotype is described as a possible model for human congenital stationary night blindness.

HAES Steril 10% is a colloidal plasma expander rarely used in veterinary medicine. In this study HAES was used in clinical cases for the treatment of shock and in a comparative hypervolemic hemodilution study (HAES versus lactated Ringer's solution) using two experimental horses. We induced hemorrhagic shock in seven dogs and then resuscitated them with intravenous (IV) lactated ringers. We then monitored anterior leg compartment pressures via a slit catheter during both bleeding and reperfusion. These values were compared with controls that received IV fluids without being bled.
