The mediating roles of interpersonal sensitivity and rumination in the relationship between self-esteem and depression: a longitudinal study on Chinese psychiatric patients.

This study examined the relationship between self-esteem, interpersonal sensitivity, rumination, and depression in psychiatric patients. Participants included 159 adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (Age: M = 31.69, SD = 11.54; 70.4% Female). The study measured depression, self-esteem and interpersonal sensitivity at T1 and rumination and depression at T2 after 10 to 14 days. The study found that after controlling for depression at T1, age, gender, and measurement time interval, low self-esteem at T1 could impact depression at T2 through the mediat

Body image and emotional distress in newly diagnosed cancer patients: The mediating role of dysfunctional attitudes and rumination.

Body image concerns (BIC) has been reported to be associated with emotional distress for cancers across various sites. This study sought to examine two cognitive vulnerability mechanisms: dysfunctional attitudes and rumination, and their combined effects on the relationship between BIC and emotional distress in newly diagnosed Asian cancer patients. Participants were 221 newly diagnosed adult cancer patients who were assessed on BIC, rumination, dysfunctional attitudes, and emotional distress. Path analysis was used to examine the hypothesized mediation model. The hypothesized mediation model

The Unusual Patient in a Reflux Center: Belching, Rumination, Somatization as Pitfalls of Patient Selection for Anti-Reflux Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Behaviorally conspicuous "odd" patients have a considerable potential to complicate selection for anti-reflux surgery. This is mainly due to a certain overlap of diseases, like GERD, disorders of gut-brain Interaction, like rumination syndrome, and somatization representing an individually increased perception of bodily complaints. Therefore, some basic insight is required to address these patients properly. Somatization and somatoform disorders are found in patients who report an unusually high number of bodily complaints. They complain about (much) more symptoms than expected fro

The impact of physical activity on rumination: a chain mediation model of executive function and metacognitive dysfunction and the examination of suppression effects.

The present study aimed to examine the mediating roles of executive function and metacognitive dysfunction in the relationship between physical activity and rumination, as well as the suppressing effect within their parallel mediating pathways. From a cognitive architecture perspective, this study further explored the association pattern between physical activity and rumination among adolescents. A cross-sectional design was adopted in the present study, and data on physical activity, rumination, executive function and metacognitive dysfunction among adolescents were collected via a questionna

Anger and major depressive disorder: the mediating role of emotion regulation and anger rumination.

Many studies have documented the existence of a close relationship between anger and depression. Furthermore, recent literature has emphasized the role of impaired emotion regulation and anger rumination in depression. The aim of this study was to explore the mediating role of emotion regulation and anger rumination on the relation between anger and major depressive disorder. Eighty-eight patients with major depressive disorder (20 males, 68 females) completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Multidimensional Anger Inventory (MAI), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ),

Rumination, anxiety, depressive symptoms and subsequent depression in adolescents at risk for psychopathology: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A ruminative style of responding to low mood is associated with subsequent high depressive symptoms and depressive disorder in children, adolescents and adults. Scores on self-report rumination scales correlate strongly with scores on anxiety and depression symptom scales. This may confound any associations between rumination and subsequent depression. METHODS: Our sample comprised 658 healthy adolescents at elevated risk for psychopathology. This study applied ordinal item (non-linear) factor analysis to pooled items from three self-report questionnaires to explore whether there

A latent classes analysis to detect cognitive and emotional profiles in cancer patients.

Thought style has been described as a mediator between cancer diagnosis and the emotional response to cancer. Describe the latent profiles related to thought style (rumination, cognitive engagement, and cognitive avoidance) and emotional response in a sample of cancer patients. 159 cancer patients were assessed prior to starting treatment. Measurement instruments used were HADS, Cancer response thought style inventory, distress thermometer, and PTGI. Analysis of latent classes to explore profiles of who share the same thought style. The solution had 4 subgroups: first group was avoidance, the …

Emotion regulation in first episode adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: what difference does a year make?

We examined the roles of cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, and rumination in first episode non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents, and the impact of age-related differences in emotion regulation use. Adverse life events and psychological distress played a significant role in NSSI onset. Being male and less use of cognitive reappraisal contributed to NSSI risk but only in regard to 12-month incidence; this effect was not observed when predicting 24-month incidence. Neither expressive suppression nor rumination was related to NSSI onset in our sample. Age-related differen

Cognitive avoidance of intrusive memories: recall vantage perspective and associations with depression.

Although recent research demonstrates that intrusive memories represent an overlapping cognitive feature of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is still a general paucity of research investigating the prevalence and maintenance of intrusive memories in depression. The current study investigated the association between a range of cognitive avoidant mechanisms that characterize PTSD samples (i.e., suppression, rumination, emotional detachment, and an observer vantage perspective) and intrusive memories of negative autobiographical events in relation to dysphoria. Hypothes

Thought Control Ability Is Different from Rumination in Explaining the Association between Neuroticism and Depression: A Three-Study Replication.

Neuroticism is the most common vulnerability factor of depression. However, the mechanism underlying this vulnerability is still unclear. Previous studies suggested that rumination intensifies the negative effect of neuroticism on depression. However, whether cognitive control could explain the association between neuroticism and depression remains unclear to date. Therefore, this study evaluated the indirect effects of rumination and thought control on the relationship between neuroticism and depression. Seven self-report measures were employed among healthy and main depression disorder (MDD)

Why ruminators won't stop: the structural and resting state correlates of rumination and its relation to depression.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a good predictor of major depression. The current study explores the structural and functional neural correlates of rumination. METHODS: To explore structural correlates of rumination (RRS, Treynor et al., 2003) we used voxel-based morphometry. We relate these correlates of rumination to concurrence of grey matter reductions in depressed patients by means of a quantitative meta-analysis on 16 VBM studies. Resting state data was used to compute maps of the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations. RESULTS: Rumination correlated negatively with grey matter volume in bi

Perceived physical appearance mediates the rumination and bulimic symptom link in adolescent girls.

The prospective relationship between initial rumination and subsequent bulimic symptoms, and vice versa, was examined, and possible mediators were tested in a community sample of 191 adolescent girls (M age = 14.5) at 3 different assessment time points. Path analyses indicated that Time 1 rumination predicted Time 3 bulimic symptoms, and vice versa. Physical appearance competence (but not social competence) mediated both relationships. The results suggest that specific cognitive mechanisms, such as rumination, may play an etiological role in the development of bulimic symptoms. This may be esp

Maladaptive Rumination as a Transdiagnostic Mediator of Vulnerability and Outcome in Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive rumination is a form of negative repetitive thinking which has attracted the interest of researchers, as it is considered a cognitive vulnerability to depression. Some of the original beliefs regarding rumination, in particular its exclusive link with depression, have been questioned in the light of research findings. At present, the very concept of rumination is still unclear, so research has been investigating this topic from different, and somewhat inconsistent, perspectives. METHODS: A literature review was performed in order to outline some core characteristics of

Rumination and alexithymia serially mediate the relationship between mindfulness and anxiety symptoms in Chinese university students.

Anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent among Chinese university students, significantly impairing psychosocial functioning. Although mindfulness has been identified as a protective psychological factor, the precise mechanisms underlying its association with anxiety symptom alleviation remain insufficiently understood. This study investigates the serial mediation effects of rumination and alexithymia in the relationship between mindfulness and anxiety symptoms. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 860 Chinese university students. Validated psychometric instruments were administered, includ

Network structure of rumination and resilience in adolescents with traumatic experiences: A comparison of PTSD and non-PTSD groups.

BACKGROUND: Prior research on rumination and resilience in trauma contexts has primarily utilized traditional statistical methods, single-sample designs, and community-based participants. As a result, symptom-level interaction patterns and network structures across varying risk levels remain unclear. This study aims to address these limitations by comparing the network structures of rumination and resilience among adolescents exposed to a public health crisis, both with and without PTSD. METHODS: A total of 1,273 adolescents (mean age = 13.84 years, 50.4% female) from post-COVID-19 China part

The mediating role of emotion regulation in transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural therapy for emotional disorders in primary care: Secondary analyses of the PsicAP randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Emotional disorders are highly prevalent in primary care. Transdiagnostic cognitive behavior therapy (TD-CBT) is a promising treatment of emotional disorders. In this study, we evaluated several emotion regulation strategies as potential mediators of treatment outcomes in a clinical sample of primary care. METHODS: A total of 1061 primary care patients were included in a randomized clinical trial comparing treatment-as-usual (TAU) to TD-CBT+TAU. Of these, 631 (TAU=316; TD-CBT+TAU=315) completed the full treatment and all pre- and post-treatment scales to assess symptoms (anxiety,

Translating Cognitive Vulnerability Theory Into Improved Adolescent Depression Screening: A Receiver Operating Characteristic Approach.

Traditionally, screening research tests how well a given symptom inventory can identify a concurrent depressive episode. Although developmental psychopathology could inform screening protocols for a myriad of depression outcomes (e.g., prospective depressive episodes), approaches typically used in research make it difficult to translate these findings. Using a translational analytic approach and multiwave longitudinal study design, we examined how screening for cognitive vulnerabilities (rumination, dysfunctional attitudes, and attributional style) may improve our ability to identify concurren

The relationship between work-related rumination and evening and morning salivary cortisol secretion.

The perseverative cognition hypothesis suggests that worry/ruminative thinking prolongs stress-related physiological activation. This study explored the association of work-related rumination with salivary cortisol sampled at 10 pm and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) the following morning. On a mid-week evening, 108 school teachers completed a small diary about their work-related thoughts and gave a saliva cortisol sample at 10 pm. The following morning, they gave four additional saliva samples: at awakening and at 15, 30 and 45 min after awakening, along with a rating of their anticipat

Rumination and Rejection Sensitivity: A Meta-Analysis.

Rumination and rejection sensitivity are positively associated with maladaptive outcomes and have been identified as vulnerability factors for psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety. These constructs share cognitive features, including negative biases and repetitive self-focused thinking, though they are described as conceptually distinct. Several studies have evaluated the association between these constructs, although there is no consensus on the degree of overlap across findings. The present meta-analytic study examined the relationship between rumination and rejection sens
