Transnational health protection strategies and other health-seeking behavior among undocumented and indigenous dairy workers in a rural new immigrant destination.

Latin American immigrants in new immigrant destinations (NIDs) experience numerous barriers that negatively impact their access to healthcare. Yet the wide range of health-seeking behaviors deployed in response to these barriers-particularly among those who are undocumented and indigenous-are not well understood. Further, studies of immigrant health in NIDs tend to take place in those locations, rather than using a multi-sited design. Building on NID scholarship, the transnational social protection literature, and work on structural vulnerability, this study uses a multi-sited research design

The relationship between a microfinance-based healthcare delivery platform, health insurance coverage, health screenings, and disease management in rural Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Structural barriers often prevent rural Kenyans from receiving healthcare and diagnostic testing. The Bridging Income Generation through grouP Integrated Care (BIGPIC) Family intervention facilitates microfinance groups, provides health screenings and treatment, and delivers education about health insurance coverage to address some of these barriers. This study evaluated the association between participation in BIGPIC microfinance groups and health screening/disease management outcomes. METHODS: From November 2018 to March 2019, we interviewed a sample of 300 members of two rural

Comparing two data collection methods to track vital events in maternal and child health via community health workers in rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Timely tracking of health outcomes is difficult in low- and middle-income countries without comprehensive vital registration systems. Community health workers (CHWs) are increasingly collecting vital events data while delivering routine care in low-resource settings. It is necessary, however, to assess whether routine programmatic data collected by CHWs are sufficiently reliable for timely monitoring and evaluation of health interventions. To study this, we assessed the consistency of vital events data recorded by CHWs using two methodologies-routine data collected while delivering

From village health volunteers to paid care givers: the optimal mix for a multidisciplinary home health care workforce in rural Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Thailand is a rapidly aging society, which places high demand on home health care services for the elderly. The shortage of health care workforce in rural areas is a crucial obstacle to the delivery of adequate home health care services. The appropriate skill-mix between multidisciplinary health team and care givers (CGs) is an attractive solution for improving home health care services in rural Thailand. This study assessed the potential of trained CGs to provide home health care services and projected what the optimal mix for a multidisciplinary home health care team in rural Tha

Scoping review protocol: a mobile health solution for the management of stress among health science students at rural universities in South Africa.

Stress is prevalent among health science students, particularly in rural settings where access to mental health resources is limited. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer a promising avenue for providing accessible support for stress management. This scoping review aims to identify existing mHealth interventions, evaluate their feasibility and acceptability, and explore the specific needs of students within these contexts. This scoping review will be conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, a structured approach that consists of six stages: identifying the research question, s

Impact of Mobile Health (mHealth) Use by Community Health Workers on the Utilization of Maternity Care in Rural Malawi: A Time Series Analysis.

PURPOSE: Maternal mortality in Malawi is high, with low coverage of maternity care being a contributing factor. To improve maternal health coverage, an Android-based, integrated mobile health (mHealth) app called YendaNafe was introduced to community health workers (CHWs) in the Neno district, rural Malawi. This study evaluates the impact of this app on the uptake of antenatal care (ANC), facility-based births, and postnatal care (PNC), compared to a reference period where CHWs provided the same services without mHealth, using the interrupted time series analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using

[Effects of the health care model of the Mexican Social Security Institute-COPLAMAR program on the health status of the underprivileged rural population of Mexico].

In 1983 the IMSS-COPLAMAR Program (administrated by the Mexican Institute of Social Security since 1979) established an integral health care model aimed at preparing both the clinical workers and the people of the communities to their care, so they could: 1) Identify the most frequent diseases in their town, together with their conditional causes; 2) Plan, program and execute activities oriented to reduce the morbi-mortality of those ailments; 3) Evaluate the results and, based on them decide to continue or to modify the program. The application of this pattern has made possible to maintain or

Improving surgical care in rural South Africa: exploring collaboration between Indigenous and formal health sectors.

INTRODUCTION: South Africans use both Indigenous and formal health care to address surgical conditions; however, these sectors are often siloed, leaving care for the individual disjointed. This study aimed to improve person-centered surgical care in rural South Africa by identifying community-prioritized surgical conditions and exploring Indigenous and formal healthcare stakeholder buy-in to collaborative solutions. METHODS: This phenomenological qualitative study used focus group discussions and a multi-stakeholder workshop. Study participants included Indigenous knowledge healers, clinic an

Confusion Arising from too many Messages in Health Awareness Campaigns in Rural Communities in Malawi.

Health talks and community engagement are central to many public health programmes, yet their effectiveness is shaped by complex social, cultural, and informational contexts. Even well-designed interventions can be undermined when communities receive overlapping health messages, leading to confusion, competing interpretations, or message fatigue. Drawing on experiences from a breast health and breast cancer awareness campaign delivered through the Akazi Project in rural Malawi, this commentary reflects on lessons from community engagement and their implications for health communication. Putting Out Fires: The Experiences of Wisconsin Rural Health Officers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Health care settings are not immune to workplace violence, and emergency department workers are especially susceptible. In 2021, Wisconsin Act 209 made it a felony to "intentionally cause bodily harm or threaten to cause bodily harm to a person who works in a health care facility." We conducted a study of emergency department workers to assess their experiences with violence and the perceived effects of Act 209. METHODS: We developed a survey for health care workers (nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers) who were currently practicing in a Wisconsin emergency departm

Assessing Rural-Urban Differences in Screening for Mental Health Needs Among Individuals in County Jails.

Rural jails are increasingly contributing to the overall jail population and little is known about how they differ from non-rural jails. This study compares demographic, behavioral health and criminal/legal histories of 3,797 individuals who booked into three rural jails and seven non-rural jails. In addition, the study assessed how jails identify mental illness, which was compared to an objective screening instrument (Kessler-6). Individuals in rural jails were more likely to be white, female, have a history of mental health services, misuse substances, and to recidivate. After controlling fo
