Electrical activity of the small intestine was recorded from chronically implanted electrodes in dogs and sheep. The effects of laparotomy and surgical procedures were identified under general anesthesia. Laparotomy induced in both species a complete inhibition of electrical spiking activity during the stage of muscular and peritoneal incision. The inhibitory period due to laparotomy was shorter in dogs than in sheep and in both species less marked at the duodenal level. A secondary period of inhibition (ileus) lasting from 6 hr for a resection of the colon to 24 hr for a transection of the sm…

Under general anaesthesia the common bile duct was ligated in two sheep and two calves. Occlusion of the duct was permanent and was followed by portal fibrosis, proliferation of bile ducts and intrahepatic bile stasis. Mild hepatic cell damage was accompanied by the release of glutamate dehydrogenase, sorbitol dehydrogenase and arginase into serum. The release of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase was slower but more continuous. One sheep and one calf developed peritonitis associated with the leakage of bile from a biopsy wound in the live. One of these animals and the other two on which biopsy was…

The heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory response to topically applied cyanide on the ventrolateral medullary surface and upper spinal cord was studied on exteriorized sinaortic-denervated fetal lambs under pentobarbital anesthesia. On all sites tested cyanide produced a rapid increase in heart rate and blood pressure (P smaller than 0.05) which was most pronounced from the area adjacent to the nerve roots IX to XI (mean 32%). Respiratory efforts consisting of 1-8 gasps were induced in half the applications to the medulla but never when the pledgets were applied to the spinal cord. The

Feeding responses of sheep and steers were compared following intraventricular injection of alpha-adrenergic agonists and antagonists in 2-hr. tests. In sheep, injection of the alpha-agonist 1-norepinephrine (1-NE) (140-1,120 nmoles) increased feed intakes 288% and 388% compared with intakes following synthetic cerebrospinal fluid. This response was blocked by the alpha-antagonist phenoxybenzamine, whereas the antagonist alone decreased feed intake. The beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol did not modify the 1-NE response. A purer but weaker alpha-agonist, 1-phenylephrine, also resulted in i…

1. Experiments were done on Welsh Mountain sheep to determine whether the sheep can be caused to discharge sweat continuously.2. On administration of sequences of four to eighteen I.V. injections of adrenaline or noradrenaline (200 mug), sheep responded to the first 4-5 injections with decreasing amounts of sweat discharge. Thereafter, the responses were fairly constant at about 10% of the first discharge. Occasionally one injection within a series elicited no sweat discharge but on other isolated occasions large discharges of sweat were induced. The blood pressure response to repeated I.V. in…
