Effects of two-year oral health information provision on changes in gingival crevicular fluid in male day-night shift workers.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although dental diseases are related to systemic diseases and daily habits and are known to affect the quality of life, little attention has been paid to the importance of oral hygiene in Japanese working-age adults. We, thus, aimed to assess changes in the periodontal condition of working-age adults after providing regular oral health information at their workplace for two years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two years of oral health information were provided to workers at four printing companies. The effectiveness thereof was assessed using gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) test

Exploitation and psychological strain in residency training: workload and shift violations in Turkish medical schools and research hospitals.

BACKGROUND: In Turkey, the path to specialisation is a highly demanding and costly process. After completing six years of intensive medical education, general practitioners must pass the highly competitive Medical Specialisation Examination (TUS) to enter residency training. To pass the examination for entry into specialist training, medical students in Turkey are compelled to attend highly expensive preparatory courses during the final two years of their six-year medical education. Additionally, graduates working as general practitioners often struggle to prepare for the specialist examinatio

Chronobiology in 1975.

UNLABELLED: A spectrum of rhythms with several frequencies importantly characterizes not only the central nervous system but also the neuroendocrines and endocrines, other structures and organs, beyond the level of the cell to subcellular structures; it has a wide bearing since chronobiologic methods and facts relate to both basic research and its bearing on major problems of our day. Perhaps most important, computer analysis of data series allows study of temporal structure, progressive and rhythmic variations in life processes and in their responses to environment and drugs. By such methods

Effects of vitamin D supplementation on cardiovascular risk factors in shift workers: Study protocol for randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The present clinical study aims to describe protocol to evaluate the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation on the cardiovascular risk factors in a population of rotating shift workers. DESIGN: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group clinical trial testing 2 oral dosages of cholecalciferol (14,000 IU and 28,000 IU per week) for 12 months. SETTING: The primary outcome for evaluation is an 18% reduction in hypertriglyceridemia (≥150 mg/dL) between pre and postintervention measurements. Baseline characteristics of the study population will be summarized separate

Registered nurses' exposure to high stress of conscience in long-term care.

BACKGROUND: In long-term care, registered nurses and other care providers often experience tensions between ideals and realities in the delivery of services, which can result in stress of conscience. Burnout, low quality of care and a tendency to leave the profession are perceived as consequences. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the socio-demographic and work-related factors associated with a high level of stress of conscience, particularly between nursing occupations. RESEARCH DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among care providers who worked in Norwegian nursing homes

Pre-pandemic circadian phase predicts pandemic alcohol use among adolescents.

Later circadian timing during adolescence is linked to worse sleep, more severe depression and greater alcohol involvement, perhaps due to circadian misalignment imposed by early school schedules. School schedules shifted later during the COVID-19 pandemic, ostensibly reducing circadian misalignment and potentially mitigating problems with depression and alcohol. We used the pandemic as a natural experiment to test whether adolescent drinkers with later circadian timing showed improvements in sleep, depression and alcohol involvement. Participants were 42 adolescents reporting alcohol use. We

Workplace-based integrative care for firefighters: real-world evidence from a visiting healthcare program.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters, as essential workers, face substantial barriers to healthcare access due to shift work, unpredictable schedules, and physically demanding duties. Workplace-based healthcare delivery models have emerged as a potential strategy to address these access gaps, yet real-world evidence remains limited. METHODS: This study evaluated a workplace-based visiting healthcare program implemented at fire stations in Seoul, Korea, between September 2023 and February 2024. A retrospective chart review assessed changes in pain intensity among firefighters receiving integrative care,

Mental Health of Canadian Firefighters: The Impact of Sleep.

Volunteer and career firefighters are at risk of major depressive disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol use disorder, and other mental health disorders due to the demanding and unpredictable nature of their employment. The mental health risks are exacerbated by the need to work extended hours, night shifts, and/or rotating schedules, or the competing demands of other employment, especially in volunteer firefighters. The mental health disorders and risk factors interact with altered sleeping patterns. In the current study, we examined volunteer and career firefighters regardi

Medication use by U.S. crewmembers on the International Space Station.

The environment on the International Space Station (ISS) includes a variety of potential physiologic stressors, including low gravity, elevated exposure to radiation, confined living and working quarters, a heavy workload, and high public visibility. This retrospective study examined medication use during long-duration spaceflights (>30 d). Medication records from 24 crewmembers on 20 missions longer than 30 d over a 10 yr period were examined for trends in usage rates, efficacy, and indication, as well as adverse event quality, frequency, and severity. Results were compared with those from cr
