A four-week minimalist shoe walking intervention influences foot posture and balance in young adults-a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Minimalist shoes (MS) are beneficial for foot health. The foot is a part of the posterior chain. It is suggested that interventions on the plantar foot sole also affect the upper segments of the body. This study aimed to investigate the local and remote effects along the posterior chain of four weeks of MS walking in recreationally active young adults. METHODS: 28 healthy participants (15 female, 13 male; 25.3 ± 5.3 years; 70.2 ± 11.9 kg; 175.0 ± 7.8 cm) were randomly assigned to a control- or intervention group. The intervention group undertook a four-week incremental MS walkin…

Barefoot pressure distribution of diabetic patients and non-diabetic volunteer subjects after sensorimotor training with an unstable shoe construction.

BACKGROUND: Forty-three percent of all diabetic foot ulcers occur under the medial forefoot due to a medial deviation of elevated pressures and premature forefoot ground contact in neuropathic diabetic patients. A 6-week sensorimotor training period with an unstable shoe construction reduces in-shoe peak pressures and contact times under the medial aspect of the forefoot. METHODS: The study was designed as a Randomised Control Trial with two diabetic groups (one served as intervention group and one as control group) and one non-diabetic intervention group. Measurements for barefoot pressure d

Prediction of Three-Directional Ground Reaction Forces during Walking Using a Shoe Sole Sensor System and Machine Learning.

We developed a shoe sole sensor system with four high-capacity, compact triaxial force sensors using a nitrogen added chromium strain-sensitive thin film mounted on the sole of a shoe. Walking experiments were performed, including straight walking and turning (side-step and cross-step turning), in six healthy young male participants and two healthy young female participants wearing the sole sensor system. A regression model to predict three-directional ground reaction forces (GRFs) from force sensor outputs was created using multiple linear regression and Gaussian process regression (GPR). The

The roles of whole body balance, shoe-floor friction and joint strength during maximum exertions: searching for the "weakest link".

Exerting manual forces is critical during occupational performance. Therefore, being able to estimate maximum force capacity is particularly useful for determining how these manual exertion demands relate to available capacity. To facilitate this type of prediction requires a complete understanding of how maximum force capacity is governed biomechanically. This research focused on identifying how factors including joint moment strength, balance and shoe-floor friction affected hand force capacity during pulling, pressing downward and pushing medially. To elucidate potential limiting factors, j

Exploring Factors to Explain Interindividual Responses to Running Economy in Advanced Footwear Technology Shoes: A Randomised Crossover Laboratory Trial with an Explanatory Predictor Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Advanced footwear technology (AFT) generally improves running economy (RE) measures on average by 4%, although considerable interindividual variability exists. We aimed to explore this interindividual variability in RE response to AFT compared to a CONTROL shoe and identify potential predictors of this variability. Specifically, differences in participant characteristics (e.g., age, sex, anthropometrics, running experience and speed, prior AFT use, V̇O2 peak, lower-limb neuromuscular performance, passive stiffness, running biomechanics, and perceptual measures) between above-thresh

Effects of Minimalist vs. Traditional Running Shoes on Abdominal Lumbopelvic Muscle Activity in Women Running at Different Speeds: A Randomized Cross-Over Clinical Trial.

This study aimed to investigate if the characteristics of different running shoes could influence intra-abdominal pressure during running. A single-centre, randomized, prospective cross-over clinical trial was performed measuring activity patterns of internal oblique (IO), lumbar erector (LE), and gluteus maximus (GM) muscles in healthy women when running with minimalist shoes (MS). Participants were randomly allocated into two-sequence (MS/TS or TS/MS) treadmill running at six, nine, and eleven km/h. The surface electromyographic activity of IO, LE, and GM muscles were recorded while running.…

Comparison of joint angles and electromyographic activity of the lower extremities during standing with wearing standard and revised high-heeled shoes: A pilot study.

Revised high-heeled shoes (HHSs) were designed to improve the shortcomings of standard HHSs. This study was conducted to compare revised and standard HHSs with regard to joint angles and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the lower extremities during standing. The participants were five healthy young women. Data regarding joint angles and EMG activity of the lower extremities were obtained under three conditions: barefoot, when wearing revised HHSs, and when wearing standard HHSs. Lower extremity joint angles in the three dimensional plane were confirmed using a VICON motion capture system. E…

The effect of high-heeled shoes on lumbar lordosis: a narrative review and discussion of the disconnect between Internet content and peer-reviewed literature.

OBJECTIVES: Some women complain of low back pain that they believe is due to wearing high-heeled shoes, and some clinicians seem to think the reason is that high-heeled shoes cause increased lumbar lordosis. This article examines Internet information aimed at the general public and presents a literature review of available research in this area. METHODS: The keywords high heels and high-heeled shoes, combined with the words lumbar, lordosis, and pelvic tilt, were used in an Internet search of Ask.com; in published literature searches of PubMed, MANTIS, CINAHL, Scopus, and ProceedingsFirst; an…

Associations between knee extensor strength and gait characteristics derived from shoe-based wearable sensors in older women.

Declining knee extensor strength (KES) is a recognized risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders including knee osteoarthritis. Regular self-assessment of knee extensor strength in older women is essential for prevention of the progression. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the KES and parameters derived from shoe-based wearable sensors during natural walking. Thirty-seven older women participated in this study. Insole force sensors and shoe-mounted IMU sensors were used to obtain spatiotemporal, ground reaction force (GRF), and foot pitch angle parameters. The maximal isome

Rocker shoe apex settings do not induce anticipatory changes in foot progression angle before the onset of the second rocker.

BACKGROUND: Rocker shoes are commonly prescribed to treat different types of foot pathology. It is clinically recommended to align the rocker axis perpendicular to the gait progression line to prevent foot progression angle (FPA) adjustments, which may increase lower limb joint load and reduce gait efficiency. AIM: This study investigated the relationship between rocker shoe apex angle (AA) and apex position (AP) and FPA during second and third rocker in normal gait. METHODS: Rocker shoes with nine combinations of AP (54 %, 64 %, 74 % of shoe length) and AA (60°, 90°, 120°) were tested in te…

Efficacy of auxetic lattice structured shoe sole in advancing footwear comfort-From the perspective of plantar pressure and contact area.

INTRODUCTION: Designing footwear for comfort is vital for preventing foot injuries and promoting foot health. This study explores the impact of auxetic structured shoe soles on plantar biomechanics and comfort, motivated by the integration of 3D printing in footwear production and the superior mechanical properties of auxetic designs. The shoe sole designs proposed in this study are based on a three-dimensional re-entrant auxetic lattice structure, orthogonally composed of re-entrant hexagonal honeycombs with internal angles less than 90 degrees. Materials fabricated using this lattice structu

Multi-Activity Step Counting Algorithm Using Deep Learning Foot Flat Detection with an IMU Inside the Sole of a Shoe.

Step counting devices were previously shown to be efficient in a variety of applications such as athletic training or patient's care programs. Various sensor placements and algorithms were previously experimented, with a best mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) close to 1% in simple mono-activity walking conditions. In this study, an existing running shoe was first instrumented with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and used in the context of multi-activity trials, at various speeds, and including several transition phases. A total of 21 participants with diverse profiles (gender, age, BMI,

Influence of circumferential ankle pressure of shoe collar on the kinematics, dynamic stability, electromyography, and plantar pressure during normal walking.

BACKGROUND: The shoe's collar plays a significant role in supporting the ankle during walking. Since the protective effect of the collar requires the circular embracing of the ankle and shank, a stiffer collar might be involved with increased circumferential ankle pressure (CAP). It is not clear how collar CAP affects walking performance. Therefore, this study was aimed at examining the influence of the collar CAP on the kinematics, dynamic stability, electromyography (EMG), and plantar pressure during normal walking. METHOD: Sixteen healthy male participants walked on a treadmill while weari

Effects of shoe heel height on the end-point and joint kinematics of the locomotor system when crossing obstacles of different heights.

High-heeled shoes increase the risk of falling during walking, especially in the presence of obstacles. The study aimed to compare the end-point (foot/shoe) trajectories and joint angles of the lower extremities in 12 healthy females crossing obstacles of different heights while barefoot and when wearing narrow-heeled shoes (heel heights: 3.9, 6.3 and 7.3 cm). During obstacle-crossing, young females in narrow-heeled shoes maintained the same leading toe-clearance as when barefoot, irrespective of the heel height, primarily through increased plantarflexion of the leading swing ankle. However, t…

A shoe sole-based apparatus and method for randomly perturbing the stance phase of gait: test-retest reliability in young adults.

Walking on an irregular surface is associated with an elevated risk for a fall at any age. Yet, relatively little is known about how a human responds to an unexpected underfoot perturbation during gait. This is partly due to the difficulty of generating an intermittent but repeatable, unexpected, underfoot perturbation whose size and location are precisely known. So we developed a shoe sole-embedded apparatus for randomly perturbing the stance phase of gait. Medial and lateral flaps were concealed in the soles of pairs of sandals, along with their actuators. Either flap could be deployed withi
