Twenty-seven patients with cutaneous and subcutaneous malignant neoplasms were treated with photodynamic therapy. Therapy was administered to 248 areas during a total of 72 separate treatment sessions after patients received a total of 45 injections of sensitizer. Seven patients had basal cell carcinoma, three had squamous cell carcinoma, three had malignant melanoma, one had liposarcoma, and 12 had breast cancers. One patient had Bowen's disease. Treatment was given either by surface radiation or interstitially. One month after treatment, 48 (67%) of the treatment sessions resulted in a compl

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to generate diagnostic images. RF-tissue interactions lead to energy absorption and tissue heating, quantified by the specific absorption rate (SAR). Although SAR limits are strictly regulated for patient safety, actual in vivo tissue temperature changes during clinical MRI examinations in humans have not been directly measured. A patient with a histologically confirmed soft tissue sarcoma of the thigh underwent a clinically indicated 3 T MRI examination 24 h prior to resection. During imaging with whole-body SAR of 2.27 W/kg, di

AIMS: Most diabetic foot ulcers are caused by tissue stress from being ambulatory in people without protective sensation. These ulcers are suggested to be preceded by local skin temperature increase due to inflammation of the underlying tissue, a so-called hotspot. Evidence to support this mechanism of ulcer development is meagre at best. We investigated if foot ulcers are preceded by increased skin temperature in people with diabetes and foot ulcer history.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants measured temperature at 6-8 plantar foot locations each day for 18 months and identified a hotspot wi…

KEY POINTS: With the advent of more frequent extreme heat events, adaptability to hot environments will be crucial for the survival of many species, including humans. However, the mechanisms that mediate human heat adaptation have remained elusive. We tested the hypothesis that heat acclimation improves the neural control of body temperature. Skin sympathetic nerve activity, comprising the efferent neural signal that activates heat loss thermoeffectors, was measured in healthy adults exposed to passive heat stress before and after a 7 day heat acclimation protocol. Heat acclimation reduced the

Humans control their core temperature within a narrow range via precise adjustments of the autonomic nervous system. In response to changing core and/or skin temperature, several critical thermoregulatory reflex effector responses are initiated and include shivering, sweating, and changes in cutaneous blood flow. Cutaneous vasomotor adjustments, mediated by modulations in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), aid in the maintenance of thermal homeostasis during cold and heat stress since (1) they serve as the first line of defense of body temperature and are initiated before other thermoregulatory…

The arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) in the distal parts of the extremities play a significant role in the heat exchange with the environment. The aim of the study was to examine the thermal responses to whole-body cooling in air, and especially the behaviour of finger skin temperature (T(f) , rich in AVAs). Eight young men sat in minimal clothing at 32°C air temperature (T(a) ), which was then lowered gradually to 13°C in 100 min. In the beginning of cooling, T(f) was high and fluctuating, and then suddenly exhibited a rapid fall, while temperatures in other skin sites fell fairly linearly al…

BACKGROUND: High solar radiation from the sun in the heat outdoor may be impaired exercise capacity. This study aimed to compare the effects of different levels of solar radiation on exercise capacity and evaluate skin temperature responses in the heat.
METHODS: Seven male participants performed cycling exercise at 60% of their maximal oxygen uptake until volitional exhaustion in hot outdoor environments (approximately 33-35°C, 40-50% relative humidity) under both clear sky (high solar radiation trial: 1062±50 W/m2) and under thick clouds (low solar radiation trial: 438±52 W/m2).

OBJECTIVE: Elevated maternal temperature in labor is associated with adverse immediate and long-term neonatal outcomes. Conventional methods of temperature measurement may not reflect the intrauterine temperature, which constitutes the fetal environment. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the most reliable noninvasive method of temperature monitoring in labor that would best reflect changes in intrauterine temperature.
METHODS: Women in labor receiving epidural analgesia had temperature readings taken every 10 seconds from the uterine cavity, ear canal, and skin surface of the leg and

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide tension (tc-pco2) at 37, 39, 41, 43, and 45 degrees C, and transcutaneous oxygen tension (tc-po2) at 41, 43, and 45 degrees C were measured simultaneously in 10 healthy adults during hyperventilation and inhalation of O2/CO2 gas. Nine electrodes were applied to each subject: Five CO2 electrodes, one O2 electrode, and three combined O2/CO2 electrodes. The CO2 electrodes had negligible temperature coefficients in the calibration gases, but the O2 electrodes showed an increase in po2 of 4.5% per degree C. With skin application, tc-pco2 increased approximately 4% per

The thermal sensitivity of different parts of the body was investigated by heating large areas of the body surface while the mean skin temperature calculated from Hardy and DuBois ' formula (1938) was always kept constant. The right arm sweating responses recorded under a local thermal clamp were related to changes in segmental skin temperatures of the different parts of the body. The results show that: 1) the various local peripheral signals are projected into integrating structures in the central nervous system; 2) the thermal sensitivity is greater for the head-and-trunk area in comparison …

BACKGROUND: Previous reports recommended using skin temperature as a guide to monitor neuropathic feet during their rehabilitation course. However, the diagnostic usefulness was limited because of poor thermal measurement and procedures. The purpose of this study was to propose a standardized protocol to quantify foot temperature.
METHODS: An infrared image system was used to measure skin temperature. The first experiment was conducted on 16 healthy volunteers to study temperature variation with respect to time. This study mapped out six subregions of anatomic interest over the sole, and aver…

In this, the second of four historical reviews on human thermoregulation during exercise, we examine the research techniques developed by our forebears. We emphasise calorimetry and thermometry, and measurements of vasomotor and sudomotor function. Since its first human use (1899), direct calorimetry has provided the foundation for modern respirometric methods for quantifying metabolic rate, and remains the most precise index of whole-body heat exchange and storage. Its alternative, biophysical modelling, relies upon many, often dubious assumptions. Thermometry, used for >300 y to assess deep-
