Cranial nerve palsy could be one of the presenting features of underlying benign or malignant tumors of the head and neck. The tumor can involve the cranial nerves by local compression, direct infiltration or by paraneoplastic process. Cranial nerve involvement depends on the anatomical course of the cranial nerve and the site of the tumor. Patients may present with single or multiple cranial nerve palsies. Multiple cranial nerve involvement could be sequential or discrete, unilateral or bilateral, painless or painful. The presentation could be acute, subacute or recurrent. Anatomic localizati

Techniques of endoscopic endonasal surgery, initially developed primarily for intracranial neoplasms, have been adapted to treat a wide variety of pathologies previously addressed with open craniotomy including congenital and acquired defects of the anterior skull base. Congenital defects can lead to herniation of leptomeninges containing cerebrospinal fluid alone or with brain tissue. Specific types of encephalocele can be defined on the basis of the associated abnormal bony anatomy. Endoscopic endonasal surgery represents a relatively recent development in the treatment of these entities. Te

INTRODUCTION: Malignant schwannomas or neurofibrosarcomas are rare nerve tumors of unknown etiology. These neoplasms are highly aggressive with a marked propensity for local recurrence and metastatic spread. Their management continues to be a challenge for pathologists and surgeons. Maxillofacial locations are very exceptional. We report the case of a patient with unusual malignant schwannoma of the infratemporal fossa discovered at a late evolving stage.

Despite the availability of noninvasive neuroradiographic techniques for the evaluation of head and neck neoplasms, paragangliomas of the carotid body often achieve substantial size before definitive diagnosis. Surgical "exploration" for the attempted resection of these lesions often results in significant blood loss, inadvertent cranial nerve injury, and procedure abandonment with partial tumor removal. Sixteen carotid body tumors were surgically resected at our institution between July 1988 and January 1995. Four of these patients had undergone cytologic examination by fine-needle aspiration

Free myocutaneous latissimus dorsi transplants are exceptionally used in cervicofacial surgery. The authors have performed an anatomical study of 23 non-embalmed subjects, using injections of neoprene latex and barium sulfate into the axillary artery and dye injections. Dissections, arteriographs and corrosion show that the lower scapular pedicle is constant, with an average length of 9.5 cm and a caliber that is sufficient for vasuclar microsurgery. Eight patients with large T4 cervicocephalic neoplasms were operated, including two with tongue tumors, one with a tumor of the oropharynx, two o

Imaging of the vault of the cranium via CT must be considered as an additional examination. It is possible to assess the CT image already stored during examination of the brain, without additionally exposing the patient, merely by changing position and breadth of the window. In our opinion, primary indication for CT of the vault of the cranium exists only if diagnosis based on survey remains doubtful. However, examination will always be combined with a representation of the individual strata of the brain. Our studies have also shown that in many cases CT assessment of the vault of the cranium

The value of radiology as part of an examination of the equine head is emphasised and the radiological appearances of more commonly occurring conditions are described. Even the normal anatomy of this complex site is subject to great variation and the aspiring radiologist should, therefore, have a good knowledge of the possible normal variations. A flexible approach must be used rather than a limitation to one or two ritual projections. The use of contrast media, wherever it might be useful, is advocated so that the maximum amount of information may be obtained from each examination. Finally, e

BACKGROUND: Cranionasal communicating tumors often originate from the extra-axial intracranial tissue, nasal cavity, and sinuses, and mostly invade the anterior skull base, leading to communication between the cranial and nasal cavities. Cranionasal communicating tumors are clinically rare and thus have been rarely reported in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical outcomes of combined transcranial and endoscopic transnasal approaches in the surgical management of cranionasal communicating tumors.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with cranionasal communicating tu

INTRODUCTION: In children, malignant tumors presenting as a calvarial mass that too as initial manifestation are unusual. Also, brain metastases per se are rare in pediatric solid tumors with an incidence of just 1.5%.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a child with calvarial metastasis which was the presenting symptom of an otherwise asymptomatic large malignant mediastinal germ cell tumor (GCT). The lesion was dural-based involving both calvaria as well as the underlying brain parenchyma. Despite such multicompartmental location, no obvious bony destruction was seen. A 12-year-old boy presented w

BACKGROUND: Supratentorial ependymoma, ZFTA fusion-positive, CNS WHO grade 3, is a rare pediatric brain tumor characterized by brisk mitotic activity and sometimes microvascular proliferation and/or necrosis. Typical treatment includes a combination of resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. These tumors often present at age 3 or 4 years and have a poor prognosis.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a 4-year-old girl who presented asymptomatically with recurrence of a supratentorial ependymoma, ZFTA fusion-positive, CNS WHO grade 3, of the right parietal lobe with a homozygo

INTRODUCTION: DEK::AFF2 fusion-associated carcinoma, a recently recognized entity predominantly localized to the sinonasal tract and skull base, remains diagnostically challenging due to its poorly defined clinicopathological spectrum and epidemiological profile. Despite its deceptively bland histomorphology, this neoplasm is paradoxically linked to aggressive clinical behavior and elevated mortality rates.
PURPOSE: To delineate the clinicopathological and molecular characteristics of DEK::AFF2 fusion-associated carcinomas to elucidate their biological drivers and refine therapeutic strategie

Myoepithelial carcinomas are rare malignant salivary gland tumours encountered most commonly in the parotid gland and are amenable to surgical resection. However, when they occur at complex anatomical locations, complete resection becomes difficult due to their locally aggressive nature. Here we describe a case of a large myoepithelial carcinoma arising in the floor of the mouth and involving major structures at the skull base. A 30-year-old female presented with a slow-growing mass in the oral cavity. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed a heterogeneous appearing lesion in the mouth floor mea

OBJECTIVE: Pituitary tumors are common, well-described skull base tumors of sellar origin. However, there are reports of rare ectopic pituitary tumors that are found exclusively outside of the sella turcica. Ectopic pituitary tumors have not been holistically analyzed. This study describes presentation and clinical patterns found among patients with ectopic pituitary tumors.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature was performed for clinical descriptions of ectopic pituitary tumors. Reports of 85 applicable cases were evaluated.
RESULTS: The most common locations of ectopic pituitar

INTRODUCTION: Chordoma is a rare, slow-growing notochordal neoplasm typical of adults. Less than 5% of the cases occur in children, where they are located at the skull base. Treatment involves surgical resection with or without radiotherapy.
CLINICAL CASE: 14-month-old patient with a left dorsal lumbar mass, pain, and limited mobility in the lower limbs. MRI showed a left paravertebral mass infiltrating the spinal canal (T11-L1), in contact with the parietal pleura, along with abdominal extension. Chordoma diagnosis was established based on percutaneous biopsy. Full resection without safety m

The melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare neoplasm that primarily affects the maxilla of infants during their first year of life. Complete resection is the conventional treatment and recurrence rates vary from 10% to 60%. The recurrent tumors grow more aggressively and can invade other anatomic structures, such as the nasal cavity, the orbit, and the skull base. The aggressive behavior of MNTIs may require radical resection, which may not be possible in some cases because of its rapid and invading growth together with invasion of vital structures. In these situations, adj

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign but locally aggressive neoplasm of infants commonly affecting the maxilla. It can also involve other areas like skull, mandible, brain and epididymis. The tumour comprise of dual populations of cells like small, basophilic neuroblast like cells and large pigment laden epithelial cells arranged in tubular and pseudoglandular pattern. The proportion of two components varies and therefore the diagnosis can be difficult in absence of the large cells. We describe the cytologic, histologic and immunohistochemical findings in a case
