EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM SOCIAL ISOLATION ON MEMORY AND DEPRESSIVE-LIKE BEHAVIOR IN RATS OF DIFFERENT SOCIAL STATUS.

Prolonged social isolation constitutes a potent chronic stressor capable of inducing behavioral and neurochemical alterations associated with anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. In rodent models, dominant and submissive individuals exhibit distinct behavioral and neuroendocrine responses under conditions of social stress. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 30 days of social isolation on depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors, as well as cognitive performance, in rats with differing social status. Experiments were conducted on 20 groups of white laboratory rats (

Neurodevelopmental imprints of sociomarkers in adolescent brain connectomes.

Neural consequences of social disparities are not yet rigorously investigated. How socioeconomic conditions influence children's connectome development remains unknown. This paper endeavors to gauge how precisely the connectome structure of the brain can predict an individual's social environment, thereby inversely assessing how social influences are engraved in the neural development of the Adolescent brain. Utilizing Adolescent Brain and Cognition Development (ABCD) data (9099 children residing in the United States), we found that social conditions both at the household and neighborhood leve

Synchronous human-dolphin foraging increases fishing success despite prey unpredictability.

Foraging theory predicts that individuals adjust their behavior in response to environmental conditions and prey availability. One solution to finding and capturing unpredictable prey is social foraging, yet it remains unclear whether its benefits arise from behavioral coordination itself or simply from predators co-occurring under favorable environmental conditions. We examine how environmental conditions shape the outcome of social foraging between predators-dolphins and human fishers-that forage together on patchy, ephemeral migratory mullet schools. Using fisher catch as our empirical meas

Measuring attitudes towards mental health using social media: investigating stigma and trivialisation.

BACKGROUND: There are numerous campaigns targeting mental health stigma. However, evaluating how effective these are in changing perceptions is complex. Social media may be used to assess stigma levels and highlight new trends. This study uses a social media platform, Twitter, to investigate stigmatising and trivialising attitudes across a range of mental and physical health conditions. METHODS: Tweets (i.e. messages) associated with five mental and five physical health conditions were collected in ten 72-h windows over a 50-day period using automated software. A random selection of tweets pe

Competition between endogenous and exogenous attention to nonemotional stimuli in social anxiety.

This study investigated whether impaired endogenous attention and enhanced exogenous attention for the processing of nonemotional stimuli were observed in individuals with high social anxiety. In each trial, participants were presented with an endogenous cue at a center, followed by exogenous cues at peripheral locations; subsequently, nonemotional masked targets were presented wherein the subjects were asked to distinguish between the targets. The accuracy rates were influenced by social anxiety only in exogenous conditions. Individuals with high social anxiety exhibited higher accuracy in th

Food rationing and the black market in France (1940-1944).

French food rationing was more stringent than that of any other Occupied country in Western Europe in the Second World War, and the nation's resulting aversion to a regime that controlled rations and prices would increase the difficulties of post-war governments. This article investigates the role of French state management in wartime food shortages, assessing the parts played by French policy and German interference in the food shortages, the diversion of supplies to the black market and the inequities in distribution. It finds the French rationing administration to have been poorly organized

"Mental illness" and "disease": outmoded concepts in alcohol and drug rehabilitation.

Are the addict and alcoholic mentally ill? By traditional standards, yes. The validity of the "mental illness" concept and its associated psychiatric labeling process, however, is challenged. A synthesis of the human ecological systems and third-force frames of reference is presented as a viable alternative to the medical "disease" model of alcoholism and drug dependency. According to the proposed disease model, "alcoholism," "addiction," and "mental illness" are considered to be modes of coping with pain and anger associated with a person's participating in social systems that frustrate self-

Social exclusion increases interpersonal distance through need threat: buffering and amplifying roles of social identification and rejection sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Although social exclusion influences interpersonal distance preferences, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. The present study addressed this gap by examining whether exclusion-induced fundamental need threat accounts for the association between social exclusion and interpersonal distance, and whether social identification and rejection sensitivity shape this process among Chinese college students. METHODS: A total of 396 participants reported social identification and rejection sensitivity, and completed measures of interpersonal distance at baseline and

The influence of optimism, social support and anxiety on aggression in a sample of dermatology patients: an analysis of cross-sectional data.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with visible skin conditions often experience stigmatization and discrimination. This may trigger maladaptive responses such as feelings of anger and hostility, with negative consequences to social interactions and relationships. OBJECTIVE: To identify psychosocial factors contributing to aggression levels in dermatology patients. METHODS: Data were obtained from 91 participants recruited from outpatient clinics in the north of England, U.K. This study used dermatology-specific data extracted from a large U.K. database of medical conditions collected by The Appearance

Age, Gender, and Disease as Determinants of Social Distancing: Germany as a Case Study.

A mix of guidance and mandated regulations during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic served to reduce the number of social contacts, to ensure distancing in public spaces, and to maintain the isolation of infected individuals. Individual variation in compliance to social distancing in Germany, relating to age, gender, or the presence of pre-existing health conditions, was examined using results from a total of 39 375 respondents to a web-based behavioral survey.Older people and females were more willing to engage in social distancing. Those with chronic conditions showed overall highe

Comparable "risks" at the socioeconomic status extremes: preadolescents' perceptions of parenting.

This study was focused on contextual variations in the parenting dimensions salient for preadolescent adjustment. The sample consisted of 614 sixth graders from two communities, one low and the other high income. Parenting dimensions included those known to be significant in each socioeconomic context: isolation from parents (emotional and physical), and parents' emphasis on achievements (overall expectations and emphasis on integrity over success). Adjustment outcomes included subjective well-being as well as school competence. Contradicting stereotypes, results showed that on average, very a

Enhancing Brain-Computer Interface Performance by Incorporating Brain-to-Brain Coupling.

Human cooperation relies on key features of social interaction in order to reach desirable outcomes. Similarly, human-robot interaction may benefit from integration with human-human interaction factors. In this paper, we aim to investigate brain-to-brain coupling during motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) training using eye-contact and hand-touch interaction. Twelve pairs of friends (experimental group) and 10 pairs of strangers (control group) were recruited for MI-based BCI tests concurrent with electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning. Event-related desynchronization (

Adolescent cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) blockade mitigates the effects of adolescent social instability stress (SS) on socially directed behaviour in female rats.

The endocannabinoid system undergoes maturation during adolescence and is involved in the development of social behaviour. In separate studies, we found: (1) that repeated cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) blockade during adolescence increased social interaction and neuronal activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens of female rats, and (2) that adolescent social instability stress (SS; daily 1-h isolation and pairing with a new cage partner from postnatal day (P) 30-45) reduced social interaction and social reward motivation in female rats. Here, we tested the possibility

Chronic social defeat stress gives rise to social avoidance through fear learning.

Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS), a widely used rodent model of stress, reliably leads to decreased social interaction in stress susceptible animals. Here, we investigate a role for fear learning in this response using male 129 Sv/Ev mice, a strain that is more vulnerable to CSDS than the commonly used C57BL/6 strain. We first demonstrate that defeated 129 Sv/Ev mice avoid a CD-1 mouse, but not a conspecific, indicating that motivation to socialize is intact in this strain. CD-1 avoidance is characterized by approach behavior that results in running in the opposite direction, activity that

Associated factors for cognitive impairment in the rural highly elderly.

BACKGROUND: Among the symptoms commonly faced by an increasingly aged population, dementia, preceded by cognitive impairment, most threatens their quality of life. Dementia is a well-recognized burden, not only for individuals who face the disease and for their families, but also for entire nation. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to identify associated factors for cognitive impairment in a very elderly population via a screening study design in Sokcho, a rural area in South Korea. METHODS: Trained nurses screened patients from 75-84 years of age for dementia using the Mini-Mental State E

A randomized controlled trial of a community health worker intervention in a population of patients with multiple chronic diseases: Study design and protocol.

UNLABELLED: Upstream interventions - e.g. housing programs and community health worker interventions- address socioeconomic and behavioral factors that influence health outcomes across diseases. Studying these types of interventions in clinical trials raises a methodological challenge: how should researchers measure the effect of an upstream intervention in a sample of patients with different diseases? This paper addresses this question using an illustrative protocol of a randomized controlled trial of collaborative-goal setting versus goal-setting plus community health worker support among pa

Social Media Use Among Young Adults With Connective Tissue Disorders: Cross-Sectional Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Young people with genetic conditions often face challenges coping with their health condition. It can be difficult for them to meet someone with a similar condition, which is important for reinforcement of chronic illness management recommendations. Social media is used by 97% of young people in the United States and may provide those with these disorders a space for emotional expression and support. However, there is a scarcity of literature related to the use of social media among adolescents with genetic conditions as an indicator of their perception regarding their own conditio

Differential Associations of Anticipatory and Consummatory Anhedonia With Depression and Social Anxiety Symptoms: A Network Analysis of University Students.

BACKGROUND: Depression and social anxiety are frequently co-occurring conditions that significantly impact young people. Anhedonia may be important to consider in early interventions for these conditions, but the roles of specific dimensions of anhedonia-anticipatory and consummatory-are not well understood. This study explored the symptom connectivity of depression and social anxiety in university students, focusing on how the two dimensions of anhedonia relate to symptoms of both conditions. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional network analysis of data from 672 university students (19-24
