Longitudinal trajectories of marijuana use from adolescence to young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana use is increasingly widespread among adolescents and young adults; however, few studies have examined longitudinal trajectories of marijuana use during this important developmental period. As such, we examined adolescent trajectories of marijuana use and the psychosocial factors that may differentiate individuals who escalate their marijuana use over adolescence and young adulthood from those who do not. METHODS: Participants were 1204 9th and 10th graders at baseline who were over-sampled for cigarette use and were followed over 6-years, as part of an extensive longitud

Cumulative stigma among injured immigrant workers: a qualitative exploratory study in Montreal (Quebec, Canada).

Purpose: This paper presents the phenomenon of stigmatisation among injured immigrant and ethnocultural minority workers experiencing a long-standing disability. Stigmatisation was one of the main findings of our study, the aim of which was to gain insight into the work rehabilitation process in the context of intercultural relations in Quebec. Various categories of stakeholders took part in the study, which sought to describe their experiences and perspectives and to identify the constraints, barriers, facilitators, and specific needs they encounter in terms of intercultural competencies.Meth

Childhood risk factors for thin body preoccupation and social pressure to be thin.

OBJECTIVE: Thin body preoccupation and social pressure to be thin (TBPSP) in adolescence are risk factors for the development of full and partial bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. This study examined precursors of these potent risk factors. METHOD: A prospective study followed 134 children from birth to 11.0 years and their parents. Recruitment began in January 1990 and ended in March 1991. The study was completed in December 2002. RESULTS: Two moderators identified different groups at risk for the development of TBPSP. A father with high body dissatisfaction characterized the large

Understanding breeding and culling decisions of dairy farmers: A qualitative study using the social-ecological model.

The average lifespan of dairy cows has decreased in the past few decades despite advances in cow welfare and genetic merit, which represents an ethical, environmental, and economic challenge. The longevity of cows is shaped through breeding and culling decisions made within wider economic, social, and institutional contexts. While several studies have identified reasons for breeding and culling at the cow-level, there is a lack of studies attending to the broader contextual or systemic factors which may affect these decisions. The Social Ecological Model (SEM) is a useful framework to understa

Agonism and dominance in female blue monkeys.

Agonistic behavior features prominently in hypotheses that explain how social variation relates to ecological factors and phylogenetic constraints. Dominance systems vary along axes of despotism, tolerance, and nepotism, and comparative studies examine cross-species patterns in these classifications. To contribute to such studies, we present a comprehensive picture of agonistic behavior and dominance relationships in wild female blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis), an arboreal guenon, with data from 9 groups spanning 18 years. We assessed where blue monkeys fall along despotic, tolerant, and ne

Refinements in the hierarchical structure of externalizing psychiatric disorders: Patterns of lifetime liability from mid-adolescence through early adulthood.

Research on hierarchical modeling of psychopathology has frequently identified 2 higher order latent factors, internalizing and externalizing. When based on the comorbidity of psychiatric diagnoses, the externalizing domain has usually been modeled as a single latent factor. Multivariate studies of externalizing symptom features, however, suggest multidimensionality. To address this apparent contradiction, confirmatory factor analytic methods and information-theoretic criteria were used to evaluate 4 theoretically plausible measurement models based on lifetime comorbidity patterns of 7 putativ

Substance use and related behaviors among suburban late adolescents: the importance of perceived parent containment.

This study builds upon prior findings of elevated substance use among suburban high school students, examining the ramifications of different parenting dimensions on substance use and related behaviors. The sample consisted of 258 11th graders in an affluent suburban community. Parenting predictors considered included those well-studied previously such as monitoring and closeness, as well as two newer dimensions: perceived containment (stringency of anticipated reactions in reaction to negative behaviors) and perceived commitment (e.g., helping the child despite other commitments). Outcomes in

Advertising and obesity: a behavioral perspective.

Concern over the levels of obesity observed in Western countries has grown as researchers forecast a rapid growth in the medical care that a progressively more obese population will require. As health workers deal with increased incidences of diabetes and other obesity-related disorders, policymakers have examined the factors contributing to this problem. In particular, advertising that promotes high fat and high sugar products to children has come under increasing scrutiny. Advertisers have rejected claims that advertising contributes to obesity by arguing that it cannot coerce people into pu

Personality, perceived luck and gambling attitudes as predictors of gambling involvement.

A quantitative observational study was undertaken to examine the relationship between individual factors and level of gambling involvement, in particular problem gambling (PG). The specific factors under study were personality, perceived luck, and attitudes towards gambling. A sample of university students (N = 185) completed a battery of questionnaires, consisting of the 16PF, Canadian Problem Gambling Index, Belief in Good Luck Scale (BIGL), Gambling Attitudes Scale (GAS), and the Impulsive Non-Conformity subscale (ImpNon) from the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences. Body images of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and female control subjects: a comparison with male ideals of female attractiveness.

Body images of female patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa were assessed against females without eating disorders and compared with male ideals of female attractiveness. A computer program was applied to examine body images of 62 patients with anorexia nervosa, 45 patients with bulimia nervosa, and 40 female and 39 male control subjects. Body size overestimation was most distinct in the two patient groups. Self-ideal discrepancy was highest in bulimia nervosa. Estimation of the society's ideal female body in all three female groups did not differ from men's perception of the most

Evidence of Protein Binding by a Nucleopeptide Based on a Thyminedecorated L-Diaminopropanoic Acid through CD and In Silico Studies.

BACKGROUND: Nucleopeptides are chimeric compounds of biomedical importance carrying DNA nucleobases anchored to peptide backbones with the ascertained capacity to bind nucleic acids. However, their ability to interact with proteins involved in pathologies of social relevance is a feature that still requires investigation. The worrying situation currently observed worldwide for the COVID-19 pandemic urgently requires the research on novel anti-SARSCoV- 2 molecular weapons, whose discovery can be aided by in silico predictive studies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to explore by spectroscop

The untold story: The life of parents with children having congenital anomalies in Ethiopia, a hermeneutic phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are structural abnormalities that occur during intrauterine life and are prenatally or postnatally identifiable. They are major contributors to neonatal and under-5 mortality. Childbirth is a pleasant phase of life for parents who birth healthy newborns. However, this would mean something different for parents who give birth to children with congenital anomalies. Even though these anomalies can be treated surgically, parents experience physical, psychological, and economic difficulties. Most of the literature on parental experiences originates from high-income

Gayborhoods as Spaces of Risk and Resilience: Associations of Gayborhood Residence with Psychological Distress and Substance Use among Ethnically Diverse Sexual Minority Men.

Gayborhoods are urban neighborhoods characterized by a high concentration of LGBTQ + residents, businesses, community spaces, and subcultures. Living in gayborhoods may foster a sense of community and belonging that can be particularly beneficial for sexual minority men. However, existing research on gayborhoods has predominantly centered on the experiences of White gay men. The extent to which gayborhoods serve as an inclusive space for ethnically diverse sexual minority men remains largely unexplored. This paper examines the associations of gayborhood residence with LGBTQ + community connect

Small acts of resistance - community-dwelling oldest old reclaiming autonomy during a pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted societies and social lives worldwide, leading to wide research interest in its consequences across age groups. This paper investigates the ways in which older adults strived to maintain autonomy during the confinement measures and age-based restrictions. The study draws on empirical data collected as part of the Cardiovascular Risk factors, Aging and Dementia (CAIDE85+) study. Data include qualitative interviews with 15 older persons (aged 80 years and older) living in eastern Finland conducted via telephone between August and December 2020. The transcribed data

Portable Photoacoustic Analytical System Combined with Wearable Hydrogel Patch for pH Monitoring in Chronic Wounds.

Timely diagnosis, monitoring, and management of chronic wounds play crucial roles in improving patients' quality of life, but clinical evaluation of chronic wounds is still ambiguous and relies heavily on the experience of clinician, resulting in increased social and financial burden and delay of optimal treatment. During the different stages of the healing process, specific and dynamic changes of pH values in the wound exudate can be used as biomarkers to reflect the wound status. Herein, a pH-responsive agent with well-behaved photoacoustic (PA) properties, nitrazine yellow (NY), was incorpo
